COUNTER-SHAFT HANGER.
SPECIFICATION fcrming part of Letters Patent No, 309,861, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed November 1, 189-4.
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT C. LEWIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket, in the countyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter-Shaft Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to tighten the belt which runshorizontally, or nearly so, from a main shaft to a counter-shaft; second, to tighten the belt which runs vertically, or nearly so, from a counter-shaft to the shaft of a machine; third, to enable the counter-shaft to be set parallel with the main shaft; fourth, to enable the counter-shaft to be set parallel with the shaft of a machine; fifth, to make the two boxes of a counter-shaft line with each other; sixth, to automatically lubricate the counter-shaft; and these objects I effect by constructing each hanger in two parts, the lower of which is vertically adjustable, by providing means for adjusting the box upon the lower part of the hanger, and providing the shaft with a recessed collar for carrying the oil from a lower to an upper receptacle, all as fully set forth hereinafter.

Each hanger consists of a frame, A, and a yoke, (3, having athreaded arm or rod, a, which extends upward through the frame A and through a nut, D,Which is provided with handles D, and turns in an opening, vein the frame; Two hangers are arranged in line to support the counter-shaft G, the frames A of the hang ers being bolted to the ceiling or other support, and being connected by bolts 13 B. The arms I) Z) of the yoke G are set parallel to the frame A, or at right angles to the shaft G, and are recessed to receive a bar. E, threaded at one end to receive a nut, F, provided with handles F, so that it may be turned in order to carry the bar longitudinally back and forth through the arms of the yoke. justment of the bar is the means of laterally 5o adjusting the shaft, while the vertical adj ustment of the yoke is the means of raising and lowering the shaft. Thus by turning the nuts D F the countershaft may he set parallel with the main or other shaft or shafts, while 5 5 at the same time the pulleys thereon may be brought to such position as to tighten the vertical or horizontal belt or belts.
Instead of using nuts for moving the parts to be adjusted, the bars E a may be fitted to slide in their supports, and set-screws may he provided for securing them after adjustment.
The shaft G is provided with a collar, H, which may be set to any desired position upon the shaft and secured by means of a set-screw, 6 5 I, and the bearing-box is provided with a transverse chamber, 1 open at the bottom and adapted to receive the said collar, the lower portion of which extends into a tray or pan,
J, supported by the yoke beneath the bearing, 7o while the upper portion extends through a slot in the bearing into an oil-box, N, at the top of the hearing. The bottom of the box N is perforated to permit the oil to flow upon the shaft-journal, and in. the sides of the 001- lar II are recesses 4, which, as the shaft revolves, receive the oil from the pan J and carry it up until it flows from the recesses into the oil-box N. By this means an abundant supply of oil is furnished to the journal, while longitudinal motion of the shaft in respect to the box is prevented.
To facilitate the erection, removal, and adjustment of the shaft, a threaded opening is formed in the bottom of the pan J, adapted to 8 5 receive a screw-plug, P, which may be removed to permit the insertion of a screwdriver, by means of which the set-screw I may be turned. \Vhere the box is divided, the collar H maybe formed directly upon the shaft.
Iclaim 1. A hanger for counter-shafts, consisting of frames adapted to be secured to the support, ayoke supporting the journal of theshaft, and means, substantially as described, for adj ustably connecting the yoke to the frame, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the frame A, having a bearing for a nut, D, and a yoke provided with a screw-rod extending through the nut and supporting the journal-box, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the journal-box supporting the shaft, of a bar extending through bearings upon the supporting-hanger, and means for adjusting the said bar longitudinally, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a hanger, of a fixed frame, the yoke connected thereto and vertically adjustable, and a bar longitudinally adjustable upon the yoke and carrying the box of the shaft, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the shaft provided with a collar having side recesses, a bearingbox recessed to receive the collar. and an oilbox above and pan below the box, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with a shaft and its reeessed collar, of a box recessed to receive the collar, and provided with an oil-box above, and arranged above a tray, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with the recessed bearing box and oil-receptacles, of a shaft, collar having lateral recesses, and screw-pin for securing the collar upon the shaft, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with the recessed box, shaft, and movable collar, of the tray having an opening below the collar, and detachable plug, for the purpose set forth.
