JACOB NEAL, OF MOULTON, IOXYA.
WASHlNG -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,732, dated December 23, 1884.
Application file-d December 26, 1883.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AOOB NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moulton, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2'is a plan View of the same, with the cover and plungers removed; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
This invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the outer or main box or tub, in
which is placed an inner box or receptacle, B, which is separated by blocks and supports a from the walls ofthe outer box, so as to leave an interspace between the outer and inner boxes to accommodate the flow of the water. Uprights O are attached to the sides of the inner box, and serve as bearings for the journals of the lever D, to which the slightlycurved arms E of the plungers are pivoted. In the bottom of the box 13 valves G are arranged, working inwardly, and operating, in connection with the openings H, to allow the water to pass upward into the inner box, while preventing it from flowing downward. Smaller valve-openings h and valves 9 are arranged at the ends of the inner box near its bottom. These valves are mounted, usually, on limiting-staples k, the arms of which pass through perforations Z in the valves, and they are provided with springs m, which serve to hold them against their seats.
P P indicate the plungers, which are respectively connected by their arms E to the arms of the operating-lever 1). Each .plunger is provided with a small valve, 7), closing (No model.)
rated by the vertical removable sliding partition H, which is seated in vertical grooves n in the sides of the box. The upper edge of the partition is provided with a spring, I, and to its lower portion are secured horizontal series of longitudinal bars L, which are designed to receive the clothes or goods in the inner box. Near the upper edge of the walls of the inner box are made small openings ,or perforations t, for the exit of water, and on the bottom of the inner box are placed marginal vertical ribs or projections, as indicated at z, to prevent the bars L from being pressed so low as to interfere with the action of the bottom valves.
The operation is as follows: The clothes are placed in the inner box upon the bars L, and said inner boxis placed in the outer box and sufficient water is poured in to secure the proper action. The plungers and lever are adjusted in place and the covers R of the outer box are put on. The operation of the lever .causes the plungers to reciprocate vertically and a plunging action ensues, forcing the water against and through the clothes in the inner box, thoroughly cleansing them in a short time.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by LettersiIatent, IS-- 1. In a washing-machine, the combination of the outer box, the removable inner box separated therefrom by interspaces, and having the bottom and end valves, the removable sliding spring-partition separating the end chambers, the removable lever, and its valved plungers having the skirt-flanges, substantial ly as specified.
2. The combination, with the outer box and In testimony whereof I affix my signature in inner valved box separated therefrom by an presence of two witnesses.
interspaoe, of the cover, the plungers, and the T NEAL V removable vertical sliding partition, having a 5 top spring, and the horizontal series of press- Vitnesses:
lire-bars secured to the lower portion, snb- THOMAS LAW,
stantially as specified; J ERIAL R. ELASTON.
