FLANGING MACHINE.
SPEGLiPIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,700, dated December 23, 1884:.
Application filed May 27, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. DUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Rolling Metallic Hollow \Vare, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for rolling metallic hollow ware, which is an improvement on a machine for flanging circular plates for which Letters Patent No. 274,115, dated March 20, 1883, were granted to me; and it consists in additions and alterations by which the machine is enabled to also roll plates into forms for cu linary utensils-such as pans, pots, &c.-as will be fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the machine; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. 3, an end view; Figs. at and 5, details.
The oblong frame G, Fig. 1, supports two rolls, A and A, at the outside, the shafts of which are journalcd on separate'journal-beds H on the frame, by which means the rolls can be laterally adjusted. The rollA, aside from its lateral movement, can also be advanced or retired by means of the screw J that is supported beyond the frame by a bracket, L. The rolls are turned by the driving-wheel p at the end of the shaft of the roll A, and by the wheels It R.
' Opposite but below the forward ends of the rolls A A is a fixed semicircular base plate, 13, centered at 0, and provided at its circumference with devices for moving the quadrant that occupies one-half of the base-plate from one side to the other. The surface of the base-plate C is raised at its middle, the sides of which raised part are dovetailed, to secure a steady motion to the quadrant and prevent it from sliding out of place. The base of the quadrant is made to fit on the plate, and, moreover, is provided with a ratchet, by which the position of the quadrant is changed.
Upon the quadrant O is a block divided at its base into two parts, on m, of which one, or, stands in the middle of a radial. brace of the (No model.)
quadrant, and the other part, m, on its circumference parallel with the former. The block forms a support, F, or frame, of which the upper part consists of two parallel bars or rails, D, whose inner sides are dovetailed. One of the bars is enlarged at its outer end to form a bearing, a, for the shaft of a bevelwheel, 00, that is operated by a crank-wheel, 1).
On the frame F, between the dovetailed bars D, slides a solid oblong or square block, W, made adjustable by a screw, 1;, that lengthwise passes through it, and is operated by means of a bevel-wheel, :10, at its outer end, which wheel gears with the bevel-wheel w. Through the block W, at a right angle with and over the screw 1;, passes a movable sleeve, 51, that carries at its end a vertical disk, t, which forms one-half of a circular clamp. The sleeve q is revolved in its seat, and can be drawn back or forth by ascrew, a, that enters it at the end opposite to the disk t, and is supported by a frame, 0', and turned by a crank-wheel, s, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8.
To the side of the block 20 facing toward the disk 15 is rigidly fastened a bent arm, N, Figs. 3 and 5, in the upper end of which is journaled a second disk, t, similar to the opposite one, with which it forms a clamp, that-is opened or closed by turning the screw it. Through the same block NV, below the sleeve passes another sleeve, Z, in which moves back and forth a shaft, K, Fig. 4., that is downward bent before it reaches the disk 15. The downward-bent portion of this shaft supports a horizontal bar, t, at its middle, which bar is made adj ustahle to various heights, and whose ends are horizontally bent forward at right angles, for the adaptation of two segments of a circle, h, of which the center coincides with that of the disks '6 t, so that a circular plate placed in the clamp and touching the adjustingsegments h is exactly centered between the disks 1. t.
At the opposite end of the shaft K is a ful' crumed lever, 1 by which the shaft is to be drawn back when required, and in the sleeve Z is a spiral spring, that pushes the shaft back to its place when the lever is set free.
The disks t t, forming a clamp, stand on a radial line of the center 0, and move with the quadrant from the front of the rolls toward their sides until they arrive on a line with the faces of the rolls or are previously stopped. The circular plate, when dropped in between the disks t t, is arrested by the segments h 71, 5 and they, having been adjusted to the diameter of the plate, center it at once to be firmly clamped between the disks. the plate to be bent, being inserted between the rolls A A and held by them, becomes necro essarily bent, since the body of the plate confined between the disks is gradually turned from the front to the sides of the rolls. The roll A, in order to perform its work properly, should be made to project beyond the roll A x 5 as much as the thickness of the plate that is to be bent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the clamping-disks 20 t t with the centering-segments h, substantially as shown.

5. The combination of the two rolls A A, wheels R, a separate journal-bed for each roll, screws for adjusting the beds in relation to 5 each other, the screw J, and a support for the screw, substantially as shown.
