y 1963 P. NEMSKY com BANK WITH COMBINATION LOCK Filed Nov. 2'7, 1961 INVENTOR. PH. 1P A EMJIY United States This invention relates to a bank and, more particularly, to a bank that may be opened by operation of a combination lock.
The basic components of the bank of this invention include a coin receptacle, a base which functions as a closure, and combination lock means for releasably securing the receptacle to the base. In preferred form the coin receptacle is closed by a tray which extends over the open end of the receptacle. The receptacle and tray are jointly received between channel slideways on the base which permit them to be slidably positioned onto the base while being held against separation. A series of spaced lugs depend from the bottom of the tray and extend down through a slot along the length of the slideway when the tray is inserted therein. A series of blocking members are mounted below the slideway for reciprocal movement transverse thereof across the slot opening. Each blocking member is biased in one direction by a spring, and may selectively be moved in the other direction by operation of a cam, When the tray is fully engaged on the base the blocking members are disposed between the spaced lugs extending through the slot. Each blocking member has a notch or cut-out formed in the top side thereof which, when disposed directly below the slot permits the lugs on the bottom of the tray to pass freely as the tray is inserted and moved along the slideway. Some of the blocking members have the cut-out disposed so as to be aligned with the slot when the cam and blocking member are moved to one position and the other blocking members have their cut-out disposed so as to be aligned with the slot when in the other position. Thus, a proper combination of blocking member positions is required to permit insertion and removal of the tray and receptacle.
Objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the description following when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is an end view in section of a bank embodying features of this invention taken along line 11 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 2 is a section view taken along line 22 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawings in greater detail, the basic components of the bank of this invention include coin receptacle 2, a base member 4 and combination locking means 6. In the preferred form of the invention the coin receptacle actually comprises a plurality of compartments 8 of different sizes determined by the denomination of coin to be placed therein and each of the coin compartments has a slot 10 of appropriate size to permit insertion of that coin. Extending laterally from the open bottom 12 of the aligned compartments is a flange 14 which, in turn, is received Within a tray or closure 16 having an upwardly extending rim 18 around the periphery thereof.
The base member 4 may be supported on legs 20 and includes on the top thereof a slideway 22 having a flat slide surface 24 and opposing channel members 26 which receive both the rim of the closure and the flange on the coin receptacle, thus holding them against a separation. In the embodiment shown, the flange, tray and slideway are of rectangular configuration. However, it is to be understood that they may be in other shapes, including arcuate, so long as the flange and tray are received within the slideway and constrained to move parallel to the sides thereof. In FIG. 2 it can be seen that one end 22a of the slideway is open for insertion and removal of the flange 14 and closure 16. The other end 22b may be atent O 3,096,934 Patented July 9, 1963 closed or other suitable stop means provided to determine the fully engaged position of the flange and closure.
Depending from the bottom of the tray or closure is a series of spaced lugs 30 which are aligned in a row extending along the length of the tray and parallel to the side edges thereof. The lugs extend completely through a slot 32 in the bottom of the slideway 22 and pass therealong during insertion of the flange and closure. Immediately below the slideway is a series of blocking members 34 which are reciprocally mounted to be moved transversely across the slot opening 32 effectively to block passage of the depending lugs and, hence, to prevent removal of the closure and coin receptacle. However, each of the blocking members has a notch or cut-out 36 or 38 in the top surface thereof which, when aligned with the slot permits free passage of the depending lugs. As seen in -FIG. 1, the notches 36 in some of the blocking members 34 are spaced longitudinally from the notches 38 in the other blocking members. Each blocking member is urged outwardly by means of a compression spring 40 and functions as a cam follower with its rounded outer end 42 urged into engagement with the surface of a rotatable cam 44 mounted on a stub shaft 46 supported on the base 4. The cams may be turned from the position shown in solid lines in BIG. 1 to the position shown in phantom wherein a high portion 48 on the cam engages the rounded outer end 42 and urges the blocking member 34 to its innermost position. The cut-out portions 36 and 38 of the blocking members are associated with the two positions thereof so that the cut-outs in the inner position will be aligned with the slots when the cam lever is raised and those in the outer position will be aligned with the slot when its associated cam lever is depressed. Since some of the blocking members have their cut-outs in the inner position and some in the outer, it is apparent that only a predetermined combination of cam lever positions will position all of the blocking members so that the notches are in complete alignment with the slot to permit free passage of the lugs for insertion and removal of the receptacle flange and tray.
While the preferred embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that modifications and changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, which is defined by the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
. l. A depository device comprising a receptacle having an opening for removal of contents,
a flange slide member including opposite edges extending laterally from said receptacle,
a complementary slideway having a planar slide surface and means receiving a pair of opposite edges of said slide member for sliding movement therebetween, said slideway being open at one end for insertion and removal of said slide member,
a series of spaced lugs depending from the bottom of said slide member and aligned in a row parallel to said opposite edges,
a slot in said slideway opening at said one end to receive said aligned lugs, and
a plurality of blocking members mounted below said slideway for reciprocal movement transversely across said slot,
means for moving each of said blocking members in one direction to a first position and in the other direction to a second position,
said blocking members being disposed to move freely between said spaced lugs when said slide member is fully engaged in said slideway,
certain of said blocking members having portions there on obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when 3 said blocking members are in said first position and other of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said blocking members are in said second position.

said blocking members being disposed to move freely between said spacedrlugs when said slide member is fully engaged in said slideway,
certain of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said certain blocking members are in said first position and other of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slotwhen said other blocking members are in said second position.
3'. The depository device defined in claim 2 wherein each of said'opposing means comprises a cam engaging one of said blocking members.
4. A separable assembly comprising a first member including a slide,
a second member including a complementary slideway having a planar slide surfiace and means receiving a pair of opposite edges of said slide member for sliding movement the-rebetween,
said-slideway being open at one end for insertion and removal of said slide,
a series of spaced lugs depending from the bottom of said slide and aligned in a row parallel to said opposite edges,
a slot in said slideway opening at said one end to receive said aligned lugs,
a plurality of blocking members mounted on said second member below said slideway for reciprocal movement transverse to said slideway, and
biasing means urging each of said blocking members in one direction to a firs-t position and means operable to move each of said blocking members in the other direction to a second position,
said blocking members being disposed to move freely between said spaced lugs when said slide is fully engaged in said slideway,
certain of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said certain blocking members are in said first position and other of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said other blocking members are in said second position.

a flange on said receptacle including opposite edges extending laterally therefrom,
a slide receiving said flange to cover said opening,
a complementary slideway having a bottom slide surface and channel members receiving said opposite edges of said flange and opposite edges of said slide member to permit sliding movement thereof while constraining said flange and slide member against separation,
said slideway being open at one end for insertion and removal of said slide member,
a series of spaced lugs depending from the bottom of said slide member and aligned in a row parallel to said opposite edges,
a slot in said slideway opening at said one end; to receive said aligned lugs,
a plurality of blocking members mounted below said slideway for reciprocal movement transversely across said slot,
biasing means urging each of saidblocking members in one direction to a first position, and
opposing means operable to move each of said blocking members in the other direction to a second position,
said blocking members being disposed to move freely between said spaced lugs when said slide member is fully engaged in said slideway,
certain of said blocking members having portions thereon obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said certain blocking members are in said first position, and
other of said blocking members having portions there on obstructing passage of said lugs in said slot when said other blocking members are in said second position.
6. The bank defined in claim 5 wherein each of said opposing means comprises a cam engaging one of said blocking members,
said cam being movable selectively between first and second conditions wherein said biasing means are unopposed and opposed respectively.
7. The bank defined in claim 5 wherein each of said opposing means comprises a rotatable cam, each of said biasing means urging a blocking member against one of said rotatable cams, and
means operable to rotate said cam between a first andsecond condition, each of said cams having a high portion that overcomes said biasing means and moves ,the blocking member" associated therewith when in said second condition.
8. Abank comprising a receptacle open at the bottom and having a coin slot in the upper portion thereof,
a flange extending laterally from said receptacle at the open bottom end,
a slide receiving said flange to cover the open end of said receptacle,
a base member,
a complementary slideway on said base member having a bottom slide surface and channel members receiving opposite edges of said flange and slide member to permit sliding movement thereof parallel to said opposite edges while constraining said flange and slide member against separation,
said slideway being open at one end for insertion and.
removal of said slide member,
aseries of spaced lugs depending from the bottom of said slide member and aligned in a row parallel to said opposite edges,
a slot in said slideway opening at said one end to receive said aligned lugs,
a plurality of blocking members mounted on said base.

1. A DEPOSITORY DEVICE COMPRISING A RECEPTACLE HAVING AN OPENING FOR REMOVAL OF CONTENTS, A FLANGE SLIDE MEMBER INCLUDING OPPOSITE EDGES EXTENDING LATERALLY FROM SAID RECEPTACLE, A COMPLEMENTARY SLIDEWAY HAVING A PLANAR SLIDE SURFACE AND MEANS RECEIVING A PAIR OF OPPOSITE EDGES OF SAID SLIDE MEMBER FOR SLIDING MOVEMENT THEREBETWEEN, SAID SLIDEWAY BEING OPEN AT ONE END FOR INSERTION AND REMOVAL OF SAID SLIDE MEMBER, A SERIES OF SPACED LUGS DEPENDING FROM THE BOTTOM OF SAID SLIDE MEMBER AND ALIGNED IN A ROW PARALLEL TO SAID OPPOSITE EDGES, A SLOT IN SAID SLIDEWAY OPENING AT SAID ONE END TO RECEIVE SAID ALIGNED LUGS, AND A PLURALITY OF BLOCKING MEMBERS MOUNTED BELOW SAID SLIDEWAY FOR RECIPROCAL MOVEMENT TRANSVERSELY ACROSS SAID SLOT, MEANS FOR MOVING EACH OF SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS IN ONE DIRECTION TO A FIRST POSITION AND IN THE OTHER DIRECTION TO A SECOND POSITION, SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS BEING DISPOSED TO MOVE FREELY BETWEEN SAID SPACED LUGS WHEN SAID SLIDE MEMBER IS FULLY ENGAGED IN SAID SLIDEWAY, CERTAIN OF SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS HAVING PORTIONS THEREON OBSTRUCTING PASSAGE OF SAID LUGS IN SAID SLOT WHEN SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS ARE IN SAID FIRST POSITION ANDD OTHER OF SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS HAVING PORTIONS THEREON OBSTRUCTING PASSAGE OF SAID LUGS IN SAID SLOT WHEN SAID BLOCKING MEMBERS ARE IN SAID SECOND POSITION.
