SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,611, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed May 2,1884. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mourns DU BOIS, of Brighton, in the county of Livingston and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Halters; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of halters.
The object of this invention is the construction of ahalter to be used especially in breaking colts and vicious animals, so that they can easilybeled by the halter and taught to stand when tied; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing,which forms a part of this specification, A represents the nose ring, which is elliptical in form, and is formed preferably of round wire of any suitable dimensions, at the rear end of the ring there be ing formed a loop for the reception of the halterstrap B. At the sides of the nose-ring A are formed loops a, in which are secured the ends of the head-strap G. If desired, a throat-latch may also be secured and form a part of the head-strap, although such is not necessary.
In practice the device is placed upon the horse or animal with the nose through the nose-ring, as in the application of the ordinary halter, with the halter-strap behind the chin. This ring being rigid and non-elastic will hang loosely around the nose of the animal until it begins its capers, such as pulling, jerkin or 7 forging ahead, when the person having hold of the halter-strap can, by a slight twitch thereof,compelthe ring to turn, violently bringing the shorter diameter of the ring across the nose of the animal, so as to compress his nostrils and compel him to stop if I am aware that nose rings for halters have been made of flexible material, such as rope or leather, and do not claim such as forming part of my invention; but I am not aware that arigid elliptical nose-ring has ever before been used.
Vhile I have described the nose-ring as be ing made of wire and prefer such to any other, yet it is evident that it may be made of any unyielding substance which would make a rigid ring, without departing from the spirit of my invention. By the term 'frigid ring I mean one that will retain its shape under all ordinary strain, so that it will not readily give when twisted around the animals nose.
\Nhat I claim as my invention. is
l. The rigid elliptical nosering A, provided at its rear end with a loop to receive the halter strap, and at its sides with loops a, for receiving the ends of the head-strap, substantially as described.
2. A halter consisting of the rigid elliptical nose-ring A, provided with a loop at its rear end and loops a at its sides, the halter-strap 13, secured to the loop at the end, and the head strap 0, having its ends secured in saidloops a, substantially as and for the purposes speci fled.
