ESPEC'KFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,602, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed September 23, 1882. ,(No model.)
f0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. COGHLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Upright Steam-Boilers, of which. the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to upright steam-boilers; and the object of my invention is to combine, with a central upright boiler placed over the fire-box, one or more supplementary boilers connected vertically with said central boiler and extending to the bottom of the fire-box, so that the heat may, after ascending through the dues of the central boiler, return through the fines of the supplementary boilers, and that that part of said supplementary boilers extending from the bottom of the central boiler to the bottom of the fire-box may be heated laterally and directly by the fire.
Figure l is a horizontal section of my in- "vention with one supplementary boiler, in
a a a are flues in the b b b are dues in the supplementary boiler. C is the rear fire-wall. D is the door of the firebox. D is the door of the ash-pan. E is a hot-air chamber. H H are hand-holes for the purpose of cleaning the I I is the lateral firewall. S is the central boiler, and S is the supplementary boiler.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, in which 0 c are holes connecting the boilers S and S. G is the grate of the fire-box. B is which A is the ash-pan. central boiler.
a bonnet covering the boilers S and S, and h h are handles thereon.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 4. is a horizontal section of my invention with two supplementary boilers, S and S. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of my invention with two supplementary boilers.
I In upright steam-boilers heretofore made,
in which the heat is used twice-that is, in which the heat is drawn downward through return fines after having ascended through the fines from the fire-boxascending and return fines have been built in the same boiler, no portion of which projects downward beyond the top of the firebox. In my invention the return-fines are set in supplementary boil ers, presenting a greater surface to the returning heat, and the supplementary boilers, pro jecting down beyond the bottom of the central boiler to the bottom of the fire-box, present such projecting surface to the fire directly.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 5 it will be seen that the boiler S sets directly over the firebox, the heat from which ascends through the fines a a, and, returning in the direction indicated by the arrows, passes downward through the flues b b in the supplementary boilers, whence it again ascends to the chimney. The supplementary boilers S in Fig. 2 and S and S in Fig. 5 project downward beyond the bottom of the boiler S, and that portion of said supplementary boilers so projecting is heated directly by the fire in the fire-box F.
I claim as my invention- I The combination of a furnace or fire-box, a main upright boiler arranged over the same, and one or more auxiliary boilers extending below the body of said main boiler and closely fitting around the latter, the water-spaces of the said main and auxiliary boilers being separated only by single shell, which is provided with openings at different levels, to permit of the free circulation of the water, substantially as set forth.
DAVID F. OOGHLAN.
