WILLIAM NSHARPNACK AND MICHAEL MOMAHON, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO, A SSIGNORS OF ONE-HALF TO G. DONNENYVIRTH, JR, AND J. C. TOBIAS,
BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
MECHANICAL POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,575, dated December 23, 1884.
' Application filed February 27, 1884. (No model.)
T at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WM. N. SHARPNACK and MIoHAEL MoMAHoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Mechanical Powers 5 and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to devices for changing a rotary to a reciprocating motion, and particularly to that class in which the reciproeating movement is increased or diminished by shifting the position of the part that con nects the pitman of the reciprocating part with the rotating part of the device.
Our invention consists of a disk having a diametrical T-shaped groove, open at both ends for the reception of the pin, provided with suitable clamping devices for attaching it to the disk, all as will hereinafter be described and claimed, reference being had to 2 the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an elevation of our improved device attached to a case, shown in section; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the disk enlarged; Fig. 3, an end elevation of the same. A represents a case, B the object to be reciprocated, C the pitman, l) the shaft, and
E the disk. The disk E is attached to the shaft in any desired manner, but is preferably cast on the end thereof, so that the journah boxes (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1) of the shaft will be at one side and not interfere with the movement of the pit-man. The outer face of the disk is provided with a diametrical T- shaped groove, 0, to form flanges c for holding the head i of the pin I, which can be moved from end to end of the groove, and taken out at either end, if desired. The pin I is provided with a clamping-nut, '1", for holding it at any point in the groove e, so that the throw of the pitman can be varied. Upon the outer part ofthe pin is a loose sleeve, i", for the pitman, and is held in place by a nut, i, on the screw-threaded end i of the pin. The disk may be of sufficient size to form a pulley for the band E, which revolves the shaft D, and thus dispense with an extra pulley.
The operation of the device is as follows: \Vhen it is desired, to increase the throw of the pitman to its fullest extent, the pin I is moved from either side of the center to the end of the groove and fixed into place. By moving the pin toward the center the throw is decreased, and by placing it exactly in the center the throw is nothing.
\Vhatwe claim as new is 1. In a device for changing mot-ion, a disk having a diametrical T-shaped groove, open at both ends, and a pin fitting in said groove and having the clamping-nut v3, sleeve i and nut i, substantially as described.
2. In a device for changing motion, a disk having a diametrical T- shaped groove, open at both ends, a peripheral hand-face, a pin fitting-in said groovc,aclamping-1111M, sleeve if, and nut i substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We a'liix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLlAM N. SHARPNACK. MICHAEL McMAHON.
