CAR COUPLING.
No. 309,559. Patented Dec. 23, 1884.
illn'rrnn dramas PATENT @Fhlfidt SALATHIEL T. NORTHCUTT, OF BROOKS, OREGON.
CAR COUPLING.
:EEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,559, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed January 25, 1884. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALATHIEL T. Non'rir- CUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooks, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to control th working parts of a oar-coupling from the top of the car or from r the ground on either side of it to secure the same against coupling automatically, or to set them to couple automatically, and to provide an interchangeable link and hook.
To this end my invention consists in the co11- struction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a car and draw-head, part of the latter be ing broken away, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of another car and drawhead meeting the first one. Figs. 3 and at are detail views.
A represents a hook pivoted to the drawhead A on a pin, B. The forward part of the hook is so slanted that a common link, J, or my improved link J, Fig. at, will slip under it, forcing it to rise and slide over into the link when two cars meet.
G is a rock-shaft mounted on the end of the car, and provided with an arm, F, which is connected with the hook A by a chain, D, and detachable hook E.
H H are levers secured tothe rock-shaft, whereby it may be worked to raise the hook A by a person standing on the ground at either side of the car.
I is a hand-rod extending to the top of the car, whereby a person on the car may work the lever H and its connections.
K is a s1ide-bar provided with hand-knobs L, which may be reached at the side of the car, and with a lever, M, extending to the top of the car. This slide-bar K may be drawn behind either of the levers H, as shown, relatively to the farther lever H, Fig. 1, to hold the hook A raised out of the path of thelink. "When the hook is in this position, the cars may meet and be parted again without being coupled.
l is alink-lifter used to guide the link when two cars meet, having draw-heads of different heights. This lifter is hinged to the drawhead at Q, and is operated by means of the hand-levers X at the sides of the car or the hand-rod Y, extending to the top of the car. The lever X is a crank of a rock-shaft, W, having another arm, V, connected with another rock-shaft, S, having acrank-arm, T, by means of a rod, U. The rock-shaft S is provided with fingers R, adapted to rise up beneath the link-lifter P and to lift it when lever X is raised. By this means the link resting on the lifter in the bottom of the drawhead may be raised to any extent required to enter the opposite draw-head.
J is a link provided with a pin-hole, B, to be pivoted on a pin, B, in place of the hook A. This link may be managed by the lifter P in the same manner that the link J is; or it may be connected by means of its hook I) with the chain 1), provided to lift the hook. Then the link J may be raised or lowered in coupling by means ot the handles H and I. The link J is thus made interchangeable with the hook A.
E represents a trapdoor for covering the hole through which the hook A swings in the top side of the draw-head. This door has a hole through which the hook E passes freely, and it is adapted to rest on the draw-head when the hook is down, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving the hook free to rise and fall in use, while the hole remains covered. WVhen the hook rises, it takes the door with it, as in Fig. l.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a draw-head having pin-holes horizontally through it, and a pin fitted to enter said holes removably, of a hook and a link adapted to hang interchange ably by said pin, substantially. as described, whereby the said hook and link may engage each other when hung to opposite draw-heads.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A, the pin B, the hook A, removably hung thereon, the rock-shaft G, having arms H and F, the rod I, and the chain D, of the slide-bar K, provided with knobs L, and the hand-lever M, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the draw-head A,
the pin 13, and the hook A, hung thereon, of g the link-lifter I, pivoted inside of the draw- 13, adapted to cover the said opening and to head, the rock-shaft S, having the fingers R rise with the hook, as set forth and for the 10 and crank T, the rock-shaft XV, having arm V purpose specified. and crank X the connection U, and the handw r T p i rod Y, substantially as shown and described. SALATHILL BOLTHOUTL 4. The combination, with the draw-head A, \Vitnesses: having an opening in its top, of the hook A, JOHN S. WALTON, pivoted in the draw-head, and the trap-door J AMES WALTON.
