OPEN t-iEARTi-i LEAD FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ?atent No. 309,556, dated December 23, 1884.
application filed May 14.1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may (IO/LCCVIL.
Be it known that I, ELLIOTT R. hl'omrnr, of
Joplin, Jasper county, and State of Missouri,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Open-Hearth Lezul-I urnaees, of which the following is a full, true, and accurate description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to increase the production and economize fuel in an open hearth furnace, and at the same time to diminish the labor usually required in attending them. vThis I accomplish by making my furnace double, in the manner hereinafter described, and by providing it with appliances for heating the air before itenters the tuyeres,
whileat the same time such air is made to keep the walls of the fur-nace suliiciently cool, and the tuyeres are also kept from becoming too hot.
Reference being now .had to the drawings, Figure l. is a cross-sectional view of my double furnace on the line 00 :0 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the side of the furnace on the line of Fig. 2, and Fig. i is a sectional view of the dividing-wall nace, as A, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a tube or covered passage-way, a, leading from the bottom of said sole-plate to a gutter, Z), placed to one side of the work-stone B. As the melted metallic lead rises in the sole-plate r it flows from the bottom of said plate into the gutter b, and thence into the ordinary casting-pot.
D, Figs. 1 and 4, is a cast-iron partition which divides the casting, forming the sole- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same on the section y 7 of plates and work-stones into two parts or furnaces, and (Z, Figs. 1 and 4, is a tube or aperture formed in said casting, by which the melted lead in the sole-plate A is allowed to flow into the sole-plate A, so that the product of both furnaces flows out through a single gutter, I).
E is a cast-iron box or trouglnadapted to be placed upon the casting D, and to form part of the same dividing-wall. It is kept full of flowing water, which enters at its bottom by means of the pipe 0. and ilows out at its top through the pipe 0. This water surrounds the tuyeres F, which may either form a part of the box i or be placed in the same. The tuyeres F, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, are arranged in a line at the back of each furnace; and I prefer to use a large number, so that all parts of the furnace may be amply provided with the air-blast. In furnaces of ordinary size, six, as shown in the drawings, I have found to give good results.
G is a cast-iron plate made to fit and cover the top of the box E, and it is provided with holes g, which register with the holes in the tuyeres F. The top of this plate is provided wit-h three ridges, which iit into corresponding depressions in the casting H.
ll is a hollow cast-iron box provided with a partition, 7/, which divides it into two independenta-ir conduits or flues, I and 1. It sets upon and is fitted to the lid G of the tuyerebox IE, said lid serving as its bot-tom. The lines l and 1 communicate, respeotively, with the dues formed in the side walls of the furnace by means of openings l and t" formed in the box If.
The partition or dividing wall made up, as above described, of the castings D, E, and, H, forms, as will be seen, the back of each of the furnaces.
J" and J are the side walls of the furnace, which are also made of cast-iron and are 1101- low. They are provided with openings marked 1i and K, respectively, for the admission of air, and have partitions L cast or inserted in them. They have also openings j and j,which register with the openings 13 and z" of the box H.
M is the chimney or stack, which is supported upon the side walls, J J, in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 3, and l.
In operation my furnace is charged in the usual manner. An air-blast is forced through the openings K and K into the lowerparts of the hollow side walls, J and J, and the blast is forced to each end of the side walls by means of the deflecting-plates L, after passing around the ends of which it passes through the upper parts of the side walls to the openingsj and j, through which it enters the flues I and I, in which it is distributed to the tuyeres F. The air of course, before reaching the tuyeres, is highly heated by reason of its extended contact with the hot walls of the furnace, and these walls are at the same time kept below the temperature at which cast-iron is injured in the operation of these furnaces.
The even distribution of the hot blast through the multiple tuyeres enables my furnace to work the most refractory ores, and the operation is carried on at greatly-increased speed and relative diminution of fuel. Labor is also saved by reason of the fact that, as constructed by me, both furnaces deliver their metal through a single gutter.
It will be obvious to one skilled in the art that my furnace can be used for roasting refractory lead and silver ores as well as for smelting them, and I have found it to give excellent results when so used.
I have described my improvements as applied to a double furnace; but, as will be readily seen, the hollow iron walls with their deflecting-plates and distributing-apertures and the water-box for the multiple tuyeres can as readily be applied to a single as to a double furnace.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A double lead-smelting furnace consisting of an iron platform constituting the soleplates and work-stones of both furnaces, having a passage, a b, on one side for the escape of the lead, and provided with a partitionwall having the opening (I, substantially as shown and described.
2. A lead-smelting furnace having its sides made of hollow iron castings provided with deflecting-plates L, and its back made of a hollow iron casting opening into the hollow side walls, and provided with apertures for distributing air to the tuyeres, substantially as shown and described.
3. A lead-smelting furnace having its sides madc'of hollow iron castings provided with deflecting-plates L, and its back made of a hollow iron casting opening into the hollow side walls, and provided with apertures for distributing air to the tuyeres, and having said tuyeres arranged in a line in the back of boX, forming a part of the back of the furnace,
substantially as shown and described.
5. A furnace for lead-smelting,in which the air. used for the blast cools the hollow sides and back of the furnace and at the same time becomes itself hot and is forced into the furnace through tuyeres placed in a portion of the hollow back of the furnace and cooled by a running stream of water, substantially as shown and described.
6. A double lead-smelting furnace having its side walls made of hollow cast-iron, pro
vided with deflecting-plates L, and its back made up in part of a hollow casting provided with the flues I I, adapted to register with openings in the hollow side walls, in combination with multiple tuyeres opening into said flues, substantially as shown and described.
7. A double lead-smelting furnace having its side walls made of hollow cast-iron, provided with deflecting-plates L, and its back made up in part of a hollow casting provided with the fiues I I, adapted to register with openings in the hollow sidewalls, in combination with multiple tuyeres situated in a Waterbox forming part of the back of the furnaces, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a double lead-smelting furnace substantially as described, a cast-iron back con sisting of a casting, D, having a perforation, d, in combination with a cast-iron tuyere-box, E, having water-pipes e and e, and a cast-iron flue-box, H, having openings to admit the blast of air and to distribute the same to the tuyeres.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ELLIOTT It. MOFFET.
