Description

IINrTEn STATEs f PATENT @Erica ANDREW MOGAEEEY, 0E BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
FOOT-GUARD FOR RAELWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,555, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed July 14, 1884. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MOGAEEEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of' Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frogs and SwitchFilling for the Protection of Life of Brakeinen and Others on Railroads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail view of the iilling, consisting of theplate and blocks; and Fig. 4, a detail view of one of the blocks.
The obj ect of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective means for the protection of life of brakemen and others on railroads; and it consists in a filling for frogs and switches, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the rails of a switch or frog supported upon the cross-ties B, and between these rails I secure the filling, which consists of the surface-plate C, preferably of wroughtiron, and supported at its ends by cast-iron blocks D, and connected thereto by suitable spikesm.
'said spikes passing through the plate and blocks and into the cross-ties. The surfaceplate C is concave, so that it will not come flush with the tread of the rails, and at its sides has downwardly-bent iianges b, extending the entire length thereof, to come under the tread of the rails, and form a perfect joint. The blocks D upon their upper sides are concave, as shown at c, to correspond with the convex under surface ofthe plate C, and have beveled ends d and e, so as to enter between the tread and base of the rails, the beveled ends d. corresponding in fornito the flanges b, to provide a support therefor.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A filling Afor frogs and switches, consisting of a concave-convex metal plate placed between the rails, and having at its sides downwardly-bent flanges and concave blocks for supporting the ends of the plate formed with beveled ends to extend under the tread of the rails, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDR EW MCGAFFEY.
