OTTO HIRT, OF OARLSBAD, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,545, dated December 23, 1884:.
Application filed February 15. 1584. (Nomodet) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO HIRT, of Carlsbad, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Saving Apparatus in Danger by Fire, of which the following is specification.
Thisinvention relates to tircescapes of the endless-belt variety; and it consists in the construetion and combination ofparts hereinafter set forth and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a suspending device for the endless escape-belt. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a detail view (from below) of the hook which forms part of such device. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section on the line I I I of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a modification ot' the suspending device. Fig. 6 represents a detail side view of the suspending pulley and its frame. Fig. 7 represents a front view of the same. Fig. 8 represents a view similar to Fig. 7, the hinged part of the frame being open. Fig. 9 represents a detailed front view of the belt to be worn by the person to be saved, and Fig. 10 represents avertical section through the entire apparatus as attached to the wall of a building.
The present apparatus consists in an iron hook, A, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in both back legs of which, a c, is.a strong screwspindle, b b. A third leg or brace of the hook A can be shortened orlengthcned, according to the wall of the building, by means of the movable part c, hinged thereto and 't'ormingthe tip thereof. The two back legs, a u, are set into tubular socketcd bracketarms 7; 7.:, provided with the screw-spindles b b, and are fixed to slide backward and forward and can be held firm in the desired position by the boltf. A hook (represented in Fig. 5) which is built into the masonry above the highest iloor of the building can also be used. In such a case hook A serves also to trice up scaffoldings for plasterblock, as shown in Fig. 10.
ing or painting a building. \Vhen hook A is fastened, then a block, B, Figs. 6, 7, and S, is hung onto it and a rope runs through the At a distance of one-half or a whole meter thimbles g are warped into the rope, and into them the person to be saved hangs the snap-hook h, Fig. 9, of his belt. Such belts in adequate number accompany the apparatus described, and are furnished in case of danger by the firemen. The saving is performed then in the simple I mannerdescribed-thatthepersonsin question lhang themselves onto the rope kept in the ,l middle of the window. 1l the rope is performed by l The hoisting up of one man of the tirebrigade.
Ihe peculiar advantages of this apparatus are increased by the fact that the saving of people can be performed from all floors of a 1 house at the same time, and, further, that the managementof such a saving apparatus requires no previous instruction or practice, so that any uninitiated person can be instru mental in the saving of life by means ofit.
What I claim is- 1. An adj ust-able hook vided with a leg or brace, 0, having a hinge l part, c, substantially as and for the purpose I set forth.
2. The tubular brackets 7e 7:, in combina tion with the legs a a of bifurcated hook A, and the fastening-bolt f, substantially as set forth.
The combination ot'screws I) b with the sockcted tubular brackets 7c 7a, the hook A, adjustable therein, and the pulley and endl less belt, substantially as set forth.
I testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO HIRT.
