Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. HAXKIN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handsaws, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of handsaws the tail end of which extends beneath the bridge of the handle, as described in Letters Patent No. 280,612, granted to myself and C. TinneyJuly 3, 1883, and also in Letters Patent No. 295,385, granted to me March 18, 1884.

The improvements which form the subjectmatter of this present application for a patent are pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents asectional face view of a saw secured to the handle according to my present invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sec tion in the plane a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the metallic supportin g-plate detached. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the screw which serves to secure the supporting-plate to the handle and to steady the tail end of the saw.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the saw-blade, the butt-end of which is secured to thehandle B by screws (4 a a, or by an y other suitable means commonly used for this purpose. The tail 0 of the saw-blade extends beneath the bridge D of the handle, and its back bears against a metallic plate, E, which is fastened to the handle bya screw, F. In the front end ofthis plateisiorn1edaslot,b, which engages with the butt-end of the saw-blade, and on the back of the tail 0 is formed a spur, 0, which passes through a slot, (1, in the plate E, Fig. 3, and is driven into the bridge D. The screw F is provided in its head with a deep slot, 6, Fig. 4, which is brought in such a positionthat it receives the back end of the tail 0 when the saw-blade is secured to the handle. By these means the tail (1, which extends back of the butt-end of the handle, is supported by the handle in the manner described in my Patent No. 295,385, and the back end of the tail is confined in the slot of the screw-head, so that said tail is efiectually prevented from moving laterally. The plate E is provided with a depression, f, which receives the head of the screw F, and serves to steady the same in its position, and at the same time the convex in ner surface of this depression is embedded in the wood of the handle, (see Fig. 2,) so as to prevent the plate E from moving laterally.

\V hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a saw-handle and a saw-blade having a tail extending back of its butt-end, of a screw secured to the handle and having a slot in its head, within which is arranged the rear extremity of the tail, substantially as described. I

2. The combination, with a saw-handle, a saw-blade having a tail back of its butt-end, and a metallic plate interposed between the tail and the handle-bridge, of a screw passing through the metallic plate into the handle and provided with a slot in its head, within which is arranged the rear extremity of the tail, substantially as described.

The combination of a saw-handle, a sawblade having a tail back of its butt-end, and a spur on the upper edge of the tail to engage the handle-bridge, a metallic plate interposed between the tail and handlebridge, and having a slot for the passage of the spur on the tail, and a slot to engage the saw-butt, and a' screw passing through the metallic plate into the handle and having a slot in its head, within which is arranged the rear extremity of the tail, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a saw-handle and a saw-blade having a tail back of its butt-end, of a metallic plate interposed between the tail an d the handle-bridge, and provided at its rear end with the depression, and the screw seeuring the plate to the handle, and having its head lying longitudinally in the depression and provided with a slot, within which is arranged the rear extremity of the tail, substantially as described.
