Description

D. K. NIXON, 0F SANDYVILLE, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR PREVENTING HOGS FROIVI ROOTING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,928, dated December 18, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. K. NIXoN, of Sandyville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Preventing Hogs from Booting; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure l, represents a front view of the device, and Fig. 2, a section on line w, Fig. l, the red lines showing the position of the snout of the hog when the device is in place.
My device consists of an iron or metallic piece A, having a hole or opening B, of a proper shape and size to admit of the upper front part of the snout of the hog to be drawn through it as shown in red lines Fig. 3, when two iron pins or wires a., b, are passed up through the part of the snout which is drawn through the hole B, and bent over the top of A, as shown in the drawings. It will thus be seen that if the hog attempts to root, the part A, together with the wires a, b, will be twisted, and consequently will occasion'so much pain and inconvenience to the hog as to put a stop to any further attempts at rooting or at least to such an eX- tent as to render the attempts perfectly harmless. If preferred the wires or iron pins may be bent and allowed to project inward as shown at c, Fig. 2, so that as the bottom of A, is pushed inward by the action of the hog attempting to root, the bent ends c, of the pins will be forced into the end of his snout and thus aid the pins in inflicting such pain as to prevent any very serious damage being done by the hog.
When the pins are used with bent ends c, it will be best to have the top or bottom of A, grooved out as seen at cl, d, Fig. 1, so that the ends of the wires or pins can be bent down inside suchV grooves in order to prevent the wires or pins turning, or any other method can be adopted which will effect the purpose.
It is necessary to haveat least two pins or wires, in order to keep the device in proper place, and also in order to render it fully effective; since with one wire or pin the device would be liable to turn, whereas with two pins it cannot without subjecting the hog to considerable pain and inconvenience.l It is also well to let the ends of the device project down, as shown at C, C, in order to be operated by the least side motion of the hogs snout in rooting.
This device does not prevent the hog from eating its ordinary food; but it is a sure preventive from injury from rooting.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A l. The combination of the metallic part A, having the opening B, with two or more pins or wires substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. lThe curved or projecting points C, C, with the lower part of A, as set forth.
`3. Bending the lower ends of the pins in, as shown at c, for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
THoMAs H. DODGE, A. C. WIDDIooMB.
