No. 605,266 Claims priority, application Great Britain Sept. 7, 1955 Claims. (Cl. 83-250) The present invention has relation to improvements connected with guillotines used for severing paper, cardboard, fabrics, metal strip, and like material, and has for its object to provide means for increasing the selection of the lengths of material to be severed by use of variable control means to determine the release of the guillotine blade for its cutting stroke.
The invention consists of improvements relating to guillotines and is characterised by the incorporation of a driven variable throw crank connected to a one way drive mechanism adapted to impart an intermittent motion to a feed roll, and means provided in or under the control of the means for driving said crank for determining the release of the guillotine blade to thus furnish a periodic sequence of selected lengths of severed material.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
FIGS. 1 and 2 are part sectional front and end elevations respectively, of a guillotine according to the present invention,
FIG. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 seen in FIG. 1 and illustrates a well-known form of single revolution power presstype clutch,
FIG. 4 is a section along the line 44 seen in FIG. 1,
FIG. 5 is a section of the actuating mechanism for the clutch pin of the single revolution power press type clutch, and
FIGS. 6 and 7 illustrate electro-mechanical parts of an alternative embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5 the guillotine comprises a driven shaft 10 having mounted thereon a variable throw crank 11 linked by a rack bar 12 to a roller type clutch 13 provided on one 14 of a pair of co-operating feed rolls 14 and 14 to thereby impart an intermittent rotation to said rolls. The variable throw crank 11 is desirably calibrated in accordance with the length of material fed by the rolls during each throw of the crank. A connecting rod 15 carrying a guillotine blade 16 at its lower end is eccentrically mounted on a sleeve 17 located on the driven shaft 10, operative connection being established at selected intervals between the driven shaft 10 and the sleeve 17 through a known type of single revolution power press type clutch (seen in FIGURE 3) to determine the actuation of the blade.
According to one means for actuating the clutch a ratchet wheel 18 (FIGS. 1 and 4) is loosely mounted on the shaft 10 and is intermittently driven by a pawl 19 which is actuated by a link 20 pivotally connected to a lever 21 which lever is pivotally mounted on the frame of the machine and is rocked by the co-operation of a roller 22 on the lever 21 with the grooved track formed in a cam disc 23 secured to the shaft 10. As seen in FIG. 4 the ratchet wheel 18 is provided for example with twelve teeth and incorporates one, three, four or six axially projecting cam lobes according to the range of selected lengths of feed to be associated with the guillotine, a

The cam lobe or lobes 24 are adapted to cooperate with a spring loaded plunger 25 (see FIGS. 1 and 5) connected through a rocker 26 with the clutch actuating pin 27 of the single revolution power press type clutch.
In operation each revolution of the driven shaft 10 will result in the displacement of one tooth of the ratchet wheel 18 so that for a single lobe ratchet wheel the clutch actuating pin 27 will be operated after each twelve revolutions of the driven shaft 10 during which time the feed rolls :14 and 14 will deliver a length of material twelve times the setting of the variable throw crank 11. To admit of actuation of the clutch after each revolution of the shaft a locking pin 28 (FIG. 5) may be used to retain the clutch pin 27 in its operative position when the length of material to be severed is determined only by the adjustment of the variable throw crank.
According to an alternative means seen in FIGURES 6 and 7 for the actuation of the power clutch the cam disc 23 secured to the driving shaft 10 is adapted to actuate the roller 22 carried by the end of a lever 29 pivoted on the frame, the opposite end of the lever being provided with a leaf spring extension 30' which is adapted to intermittently operate the arm 31 of an automatic counting device 31 consequent on each revolution of.the shaft 10. The counting device is adapted to initiate a control operation after a predetermined count of impulses fed into the device, consequent on which operation the device automatically resets itself. The counting device 31 is adapted to operate a switch incorporated therein after a predetermined count to complete the circuit of an electro magnetic solenoid 32 (FIG. 7) which is pivotally connected to a rocker 3-3 which in turn actuates the clutch pin 27 so that the length to be severed by the guillotine is determined by the product of the throw of the crank 11 and the selected cycle of the counting device 31.
Iclaim:
1. In a guillotine, a relatively stationary support, a continuously driven power input shaft rotatably mounted on said support, relatively fixed and reciprocable guillotine blades mounted on said support, a single revolution type clutch comprising a driven clutch member mounted on and eccentric with respect to said shaft, means directly connecting the reciprocable guillotine blade to said driven clutch member for translating eccentric rotation of said driven member to reciprocation of said reciprocable blade, a clutch drive member fixed on said shaft, a clutch pin disposed for movement between a clutch disengaged position and a clutch engaging position where it positively couples said driven clutch member to said clutch drive member, and means comprising cam means mounted on said shaft and operatively connected to said clutch pin for selectively causing such clutch engagement as to effect a single reciprocation of said reciprocable guillotine blade upon each predetermined number of revolutions of said shaft.
2. In the guillotine defined in claim 1, feed roll means mounted on said support, and means for actuating said feed roll means from said shaft comprising a variable throw crank on said shaft having an operative drive connection to said feed roll means.
3. In the guillotine defined in claim 2, means for locking said clutch pin in clutch engaged position.
4. In the guillotine defined in claim 1, said last named means comprising a ratchet wheel freely rotatable on said shaft and carrying said clutch pin actuating cam means, a
a3 drive pawl for said ratchet wheel, and a cam continuously rotatable with said shaft for actuating said pawl to unidirectionally intermittently rotate said ratchet Wheel.
5. In the guillotine defined in claim 1, said last named means comprising a cam continuously rotating with said shaft, a revolution counter driven by said cam, and means operative upon a predetermined count of said counter for controlling actuation of said clutch pin.

Claims (1)

1. IN A GUILLOTINE, A RELATIVELY STATIONARY SUPPORT, A CONTINUOUSLY DRIVEN POWER INPUT SHAFT ROTATABLY MOUNTED ON SAID SUPPORT, RELATIVELY FIXED AND RECIPROCABLE GUILLOTINE BLADES MOUNTED ON SAID SUPPORT, A SINGLE REVOLUTION TYPE CLUTCH COMPRISING A DRIVEN CLUTCH MEMBER MOUNTED ON AND ECCENTRIC WITH RESPECT TO SAID SHAFT, MEANS DIRECTLY CONNECTING THE RECIPROCABLE GUILLOTINE BLADE TO SAID DRIVEN CLUTCH MEMBER FOR TRANSLATING ECCENTRIC ROTATION OF SAID DRIVEN MEMBER TO RECIPROCATION OF SAID RECIPROCABLE BLADE, A CLUTCH DRIVE MEMBER FIXED ON SAID SHAFT, A CLUTCH PIN DISPOSED FOR MOVEMENT BETWEEN A CLUTCH DISENGAGED POSITION AND A CLUTCH ENGAGING POSITION WHERE IT POSITIVELY COUPLES SAID DRIVEN CLUTCH MEMBER TO SAID CLUTCH DRIVE MEMBER, AND MEANS COMPRISING CAM MEANS MOUNTED ON SAID SHAFT AND OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO SAID CLUTCH PIN FOR SELECTIVELY CAUSING SUCH CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT AS TO EFFECT A SINGLE RECIPROCATION OF SAID RECIPROCABLE GUILLOTINE BLADE UPON EACH PREDETERMINED NUMBER OF REVOLUTIONS OF SAID SHAFT.
