Description

(No Model.)
F. G. OSBORN.
WRENCH.
Patente@ Deo. 9, 1884.
UNTTan STaTns PATENT @Trice FREDERICK G. OSBORN, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY.
'Vi/RENCl-i-v PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,084, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed March 24, 18554. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. OsBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New-` ark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to `the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a portion of a side of my wrench, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the movable jaw in section.
This invention has relation to imp rovements in that class of wrenches known as sliding-jaw wrenches;77 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed outin the claim appended.
Referring by leiter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a wrench-shank, which may be of any approved construction, havin the usual 'fixed head, a.
B indicates the sliding or box jaw, having a recess in its under portion opening into the slot for the passage of the wrench shank, forming a front and rear wall, 7i h. Pivoted within this recessed portion to the side walls of the jaw by means of a bolt, c, is a pawllever, D. This pawlflever has a series of teeth on its forward upper side, which incline upwardly and rearwardly to engage vteeth of a similar contour ofthe shank A. The teeth of the lever D are held in engagement with the teeth of the shank by means of a spiral spring,
d, which is seated in an annular recess, e, in I the said movable jaw, as shown. The pawllever D is also provided at its rear end with a thumb-post, E, which extends through an aperture in the rear portion of the said movable j aw.
The aperture F in the pawl-lever D for the passage of the pivot-bolt c may be either elongated or a sufficient diameter annularly larger than the pivot-bolt to allow'a slight play of the said pawl-lever back and forth, so that when the movable jaw is adjusted on a nut or the like the strain during operation is removed from the pivot-bolt and transmitted to the forward wall, la, of the jaw B by the inner face, h', of the same coming in engagement with the head g of the pawl-lever.. By this construction it will be perceived that when power is applied to the engaging faeeof the movable jaw its forward inner face wall, h', will engage the head g of the pawl-lever, thereby forcing its teeth securely in engagement with the teeth of the shank A, which will prevent any possibility of the jaw B slipping upon the shank during operation should the spring d, through weakness or otherwise, fail to keep the teeth of the pawl in engagement with the teeth of the shank.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wrench, the combination, with the shank A, `constructed as described, of the boxjaw B,.the pawl-lever D, having the thumbpost E, and pivoted within the said box-j aw, the spring d, seated in the recess c, andthe pivot-bolt c, the aperture F of the said pawllever being enlarged, as shown, whereby the said lever may be allowed a slight movement back and forth upon the pivot-bolt, to bring the forward wall, h', of the box-jaw in engagement with the head 'g of the pawl-lever, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
