To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that .l, lVIILLARD F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States and a resident of East Ringgold, in the county of Pick away an d State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable and Adjustable Grave-Vaults; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable othersskilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use the same,l 'rl'i'ierenee b ing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved portable or removable grave-vault. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section. Fig. 4- is a top view, and Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are pers ;)ective detail. views of the several parts of the vault.

My invention has relation to removable grave-vaults; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. a

havingaperforatioinlflis hinged upon the middie of the inner side of each slat, the said perforation in the plate registering with the perforation in the rectangular frame, and with a perforation, Q, in the outer bottomblock, and with a perforation, R, in a wooden bottom l'rai'ne, b, all the perforations servii'ig to receive a long red or bolt, T, having a head upon its upper end and screwing into the perforations in the outer bottom blocks, its lower end being threaded and the said perforation being threaded. The corner slats, U, are constructed in the same manner as the side sh ts, with the exception of their being wider than the side slates, so as to enable them to extend out at the corner to form a square corner, and their upper ends are provided, besides the re dueed ends or tenons, with tcnons "vfliitting in the slots in the corners of the rectaugi'ilar frame, and extending above them, having perforations or recesses adapted to receive loele ing-bolts. The entire upper open side of the vault is covered with a removable flanged cover, W, provided with suit-able handles, X, and having suitable locks, Y, or other fasten ing means, by means of which the cover may be securely attached to the remainder of the vault.

When it is desired to use the vault outside of a grave, the bottom blocks are n'ovided at one side with projecting lugs Z upon their upper sides, and with hinged bails A at the other side, which bails may be hooked over the lugs upon the opposite bottom bloc (S, serving to hold the said blocks together, the wooden bottom being dispensed with.

It will be seen that the vault may be built in the grave, resting upon the wooden base plate, receive the coiiin, and be closed, the cover locked upon the ends or tenons of the corner-posts preventing the entire vault from being tamper-ml with, and alter the body has been sullieiently long time in the grave to preclude any possibility of its being taken away, or for any other reason whatever, the cover maybe removed, the bolls taken out, when the rectangular frame may be raised and the slats be drawn fromunder the bottom of the coffin, the hinged bottom pieces slipping under the bottom of the coliin, until at last the wooden base-plate is allthat remains, when the grave may be tilled and. the vault used for another grave.

llaving thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the rectangular frame, the slatshaving flexible bottom blochinged to their lower ends, means for securing the slats to the frame, the flanged cover, and means for securing the cover to the upper ends of the end or corner slats, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. The combination, in a grave-vault composed of metallic slats, of the side slats upon one side, having flexible bottom blocks hinged to their lower ends, provided with upwardlyprojecting lugs, and the side slats ofthe other side, having flexible bottom blocks provided with hinged bails adapted to engage the projcctions upon the blocks upon the other side, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

3. The combination of the rectangular frame having. notches in its edges and perforations corresponding with the notches, the side slats having reduced upper ends fitting in the notches in the frame, and having inwardly-bent perforated strips upon their reduced upper ends, the flexible bottom blocks having threaded perforations, and the belts or rods having their lower ends screw-threaded, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

4. The combination of the rectangular frame having notches in its outer edges and perforations corresponding with the notches, the slats having their upper ends reduced, fitting in the notches in the frame,and provided with inward] y-bcn t perforate d stri ps, the perforated plates hinged upon the middle of the inner sides of the slats, the outer bottom blocks hinged-to the lower ends of the slats and having vertical threaded perforations, the inner bottom blocks hinged to the inner ends of the outer blocks, and the bolts or rods threaded at their lower ends, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

5. The combination of the rectangularframe having notches in its outer edges, perforations corresponding to the notches and slots in its corners, the slats having perforated strips at their freduced ends, hinged plates upon the middle of their inner sides, and perforated flexible bottom blocks, the corner slats having hinged perforated plates, perforated hinged flexible bottom blocks, reduced upper ends having inwardly-bent perforated strips, and the longer tenons having perforations or recesses for the reception of locking-bolts, the belts or rods having threaded lower ends, the wooden detachable bottom having perforations corresponding to the perforations in 'the bottom blocks, and the flanged cover havingmeans for engaging the recessed or perforated ends of the corncrslats, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
