Description

ITE
assi rnrnn'r FFIOE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 30,898, dated December 11, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, P. D. VAN HonsnN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved fashing-lIachine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciication, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention showing the washboard in a position ready for hand washing. F ig. 2 is a similar section with the washboard reversed and ready for pounding.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a triangular wash-tub in combination with a reversible washboard in such a manner that said washboard can be used either for the purpose of pounding the clothes or in the ordinary manner for hand washing.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
My tub A, is made in the form of a rectangular triangle, the bottom B, of the same being inclined from the top down to the lower corner on the opposite side as clearly shown in the drawing. This bottom forms the support for a washboard C, and it is provided with ways a., on its sides to allow said washboard to slide in and out at pleasure. One end Z), of the washboard is corrugated and shar ointed and it serves to pound the clothes, and in order to prevent injury to clothes, that side of the tub which is opposite to this edge of the washboard is protected by a soft strip @,of india-rubber or of any other suitable material. A handle d, on the opposite end of the washboard serves to operate the same, when it is used for pounding. The washboard may however be reversed so that it assumes a. position as shown in Fig. l. In this case the handle CZ, rests against the vertical side of the tub, and the washboard is in a convenient position for hand washing. A wringer D, may be applied to the tube if it is desired.
By giving to the tub a triangular shape, it can be constructed with less expense and it requires less water to till it and at the same time it affords ample space both for hand washing and for pounding the clothes.
The inclined position of the bottom B, of the tub allows of operating the washboard with great convenience when it is to be used for pounding and when it is used for hand washing, it assumes a position which will be found very convenient for the operator.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the triangular shaped tub A, with the reversible wash-board C, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
