S. MGOLAIN.
STEAM BOILER.
No. 808,918. Patented Deo. 9, 1884.
f' i Enrica.
Barnier STEAlVl-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,918, dated December 9. 1884.
Application filed March 12, 1884. (No modeLl To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL MCGLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rlhe object of this improvement is to take the heat of the re in a steam feedcooker from the boiler at a point in line with the lowwater gage, so no part of the -boiler proper will be exposed to the heat without water to protect the same. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, herewith tiled as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in all the views.
Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 8 is a top view of one of the parts detached.
A represents the outer shell.
B is an inverted cone surrounding the smoke-stack or uptake G, which forms a lapjoint, B", with the fire-box cone O, where the parts are to be riveted together in the usual manner. The inverted cone B is to be similarly riveted to the uptake, and is iianged outwardly at the top, where it forms joint b with the crown-sheet B', to which is aihxed a funnel, F, and valve f, for charging the boiler with water.
a and a are water-gages, the latter of which is to be located at a proper elevation above the point where the heat from the lire-box C leaves the latter and passes out through the uptake and away from the body of the boiler.
H is a Steampipe, provided with a valve, lz, for conducting the steam into the cookingvessel E.
D is the aslrbox, provided with door d. for regulating the draft of the iire-box without opening the furnace-door a, and to be used in connection with thelatter for the purpose mentioned.
d represents the grate. (More fully illustrated in Fig. 3.) The steam 'is let on or shut off from the cooking-vessel E by the valve h. Byd
forming the inverted cone B independent ofthe conical fire-chamber C, the uptake G is supported, and may be removed independently of the said conical fire-chamber.
Iam aware of the United States Patent No. 222,016, granted November 25, 1879, to W. Oollings, for an improved feed-steamer,and the construction set forth therein, and do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming any feature or features of said device.
Having explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
rlhe combination, in a steam feed-cooker, of a casing, A, gages a c', a conical ire-cham ber, O, arranged therein, as described, and terminating at its upper end in a neck, an uptake having its lower portion embracing said neck, and independent inverted cone B, arranged in the upper portion of the casing, depending therein, and terminating in a band or collar to embrace said uptake adjacent to the neck of the cone O, so that said independent cone and uptake are removably supported in position relative to the lire-chamber, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL MGCLAIN. Vitnesses:
A. F. FERGUSON, S. A. SHOULL.
