(Cl. 240-78) This invention relates in general to certain new and useful improvements in light-ray baffle construction and, more particularly, to certain grid-like devices or so-called louvers adapted for efficiently transmitting light while at the same time effectively masking the light source from direct view.
Light-ray baffles are used in conjunction with various types of light sources, either across the bottom of individual lighting fixtures, or, across the bottom of an array of lighting fixtures. The baffies are intended to cause light diffusion and even dispersion of the light-rays. Conventional structures of this type are either of the eggcrate or cell type and, in both types, the thin vertical elements are tightly interlocked and a permanent cellular arrangement which is very difficult to clean.
It is, therefore, the primary object of the present invention to provide a light-ray baflie which can be quickly and conveniently cleaned.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a unique type of light-ray baffle which is simple and econominal in cost and highly attractive in appearance.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a light-ray baffle which can be readily disassembled, reassembled, mounted, and demounted, With a minimum of time and effort.
It is an additional object of the present invention to provide a light-ray baffle comprised of grids which are readily removable for painting or replacement.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a unique and novel means for rotatably mounting an array of grids on a light-ray baflie.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the present invention, A designates a light-ray baffle assembly comprising a plurality of hanger clips 1, channel supports 2, channels 3, and grid elements 4. Hanger clip 1 is preferably, though not necessarily, fabri- 3,088,025 Patented Apr. 30, 1963 ICE cated in the form of a metallic U-shaped channel having a bight 5 and parallel sides 6, 7 respectively terminated in inwardly bent flanges 8, 9. Located in bight 5 are two spaced apertures 10 adapted for receiving machine screws 11, said screws being held in place by lock-nut type fasteners 12, each inserted over a lateral margin of bight 5, the threaded portion of said lock-nut fastener 12 coming into alignment on opposite sides of an aperture 10. Located centrally between apertures 10 on bight 5 and extending thereacross and downwardly along side 6 is an elongated slot 13, which is intersected part way down side 6 by a second elongated slot 14, the latter being perpendicular to slot 13. It should be noted that slots 13 and 14 have sutficient width to clear a threaded member and a nut therefor, respectively. It should also be noted that slot 14 is substantially below the bottom surface of bight 5, there being a substantial amount of surface area 15 between each side of slot 14 and the under side of bight 5. Secured in the portion of slot 13 which lies on bight 5 is a threaded rod 16 which is secured in slot 13 by means of nuts 17, 18, said nuts being adapted to facewise engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of bight 5, respectively. Threaded rod 16, at its upper end, is provided with conventional means, such as a bracket b having conventional bolts c, for attaching to a ceiling or other supporting structure. In use, threaded rod \16 is attached to hanger clip 1 in the following manner. Nut 17 is moved upwardly on threaded rod 16, thereby causing a separation between the nut 17 and nut 18. After nut '17 has been raised a suitable distance, the lower end of threaded rod 16 and nut 18 are slipped through slot '13 and slot 14, respectively, and the hanger clip is then released to rest on the upper surface of nut 18. When hanger clip 1 has come into rest with said upper surface of nut 18, nut 17 is then tightened down into facewise engagement with the upper surface of bight 5, thereby clamping threaded rod 16 to hanger clip -1 between nuts 17 and v18. The areas of surface 15 between the bottom surface of bight 5 and slot 14 serve to prevent nut 18 from accidentally sliding out through slot 14.
The channel support 2 is sized for nested disposition within hanger clip -1 and integrally includes a bight 19 and parallel sides 20, 21, sides 20 and 21 extending downwardly and terminating in straight margins adapted to rest on flanges 8, 9 of hanger clip 1. Located near the lower edges of sides 20, 21 and in horizontal alignment is a plurality of slots 22, 23, respectively, slots 22, 23 differing only in that slots 22 are located in sides 20* and slots 23 are located in sides 21. Slots 22 and 23 are provided intermediate their sides with a pair of shoulders 24, 25, respectively, so that slots 22 and 23 are more narrow at one end than they are at the other. It should be noted here that the spacing between the individual slots 22 in side 20 and the individual slots 23 in side 21 is equal and uniform, whereby when two such channel supports 2 are properly aligned so that side 20 of one channel support 2 faces side 21 of the other support, the slots will define a series of equally spaced parallel lines. Furthermore, it should be noted that the length of hanger clip 1 is selected to be substantially less than the spacing between adjacent slots, such that hanger clip 1 may be inserted about channel support 2 without interfering with any of the slots 22 or 23. Preferably, though not necessarily, the slot interference problem may be further reduced by spacing the slots 22 and 23 of one channel support 2 in alignment throughout said channel support. Channel support 2 is fastened to hanger clip 1 in the following manner. Channel support 2 is slidably inserted in hanger clip 1 and hanger clip 1 is properly positioned thereon. When hanger clip 1 is in the proper position, machine screws 11 are tightened thereby coming into contact with bight 19 of channel support 2, forcing the lower margins of sides 20 and 21 into compressive engagement with flanges 8, 9 of hanger clip 1, thereby creating a frictional force between the bottom margins of sides 20 and 21 and the upper surfaces of flanges 8, 9. To remove hanger clip 1 from about channel support 2, it is necessary merely to loosen machine screws 11 after anything which has been inserted in slots 22 or 23 of channel support 2 has been removed.
It should be also noted that the bottom portion of slots 22 and 23 are of ample width to permit installation of channels 3 therein.
Inserted in the bottom portion of slots 22 and 23 and interlocked therein by means of a notch 26 are channels 3, channels 3 comprising an elongated U-sh-aped member having a bight 27 and parallel walls 28 and 29. Channel 3 is provided with notch 26 at either end, one end being for insertion in the narrow slot of slot 23 in channel support 2, the other notch at the other end being for insertion in the narrow portion of slot 22 in a second channel support 2. Spaced along bight 27 of channel 3 is a plurality of longitudinal slots 30, each having a spring-clip 31 inserted therein, spring-clip 31 comprising an arcuate bend 32 of spring wire forming substantially a circle, said bend being terminated in a narrow neck 33 and a pair of outwardly depending elements 34. Longitudinal notch 30 and narrow neck 33 are properly sized so that when spring-clip 31 is inserted in said notch, a tensile force is created between the elements of spring-clip 31 at narrow neck 33 and the endwise sides of narrow notch 30, whereby to retain spring-clip 31 within slot 30.
Attached to channels 3 by means of spring-clips 31 is a plurality of grid elements 4, each grid element comprising a large flat plate section 35, said plate section extending downwardly, and a horizontal flange 36 attached to the top of plate section 35. Flange 36 extends outwardly on both sides of plate 35 and contains a centrally located diamond-shaped aperture 37, the center of said aperture being in alignment with the center of plate 35. Located in plate 35 directly below the diamondshaped aperture 37 and extending downwardly into plate 35 is a large aperture 38, which provides clearance for the elements 34 of spring-clip 31, which extends through diamond-shaped aperture 38, thereby permitting grid element 4 to be rotated freely beneath channel 3. It should be noted that preferably, though not necessarily, the four points of diamond-shaped aperture 37 are located so that two of the points lie in the plane of flat plate 35 and the other two points define a line perpendicular to plate 35, whereby, when said grid element 4 is secured to channel 3 by means of spring-clip 31 being inserted in diamond-shaped aperture 37 through longitudinal notch 30, the outwardly facing sides of neck 33 will engage a pair of opposite points of said diamond-shaped aperture and grid element 4 can be aligned either perpendicularly to, or parallel to, the longitudinal axis of channel member 3. It should be also noted that the spacing between notches 30 and channels 3 should be sufiicient to permit free rotation of grid element 4 about channel 3.
In use, the invention may be used in the following manner. A plurality of channels 3, each having an op timum number of grid elements 4 attached thereto by spring-clips 31, are inserted between a pair of channel supports 2 which are secured to a ceiling or lighting fixture by means of hanger clip 1 with threaded rod 16 inserted therein. After the fixture is completely installed, as previously described, the individual grid elements'may be rotated about channel 3 to any desired pattern to obtain a desired amount of light dispersion and diffusion, such as the arrangement depicted by FIG. 7. Because the grid elements 4 are freely rotatable about channels 3, any desired pattern may be obtained without requiring that the entire light baflle be disassembled and brought down. Furthermore, should it be desirable to clean the light baflles in place, all of the grid elements 4 may be aligned preferably, though not necessarily, parallel to channels 3 and a brush and damp cloth moved along the flat surface formed by the plurality of aligned flat surfaces 35. In addition, should one grid element be struck by something from the ground and resultingly damaged, or, should it be damaged as a result of a defect in the light source, the grid element itself may be readily removed merely by compressing outwardly protruding elements 34 of spring-clip 31 together and sliding the grid element 4 directly thereof.
The particular design also lends itself to a variety of light-ray baffle installations ranging from a single fixture to an entire ceiling of light fixtures. Inasmuch as the length of channels 3 and the length of channel supports 2 are variable, and further since the channel supports 2 are provided with slots 22 on both of their sides, and finally since any number of hanger clips 1 may be used, the light-ray bafile of the present invention is adaptable to any installation.
Although the present bafile arrangement was described as being one which depended from the ceiling, it is understood that the same arrangement readily lends itself for use in front of a vertical window or in any other required vertical plane. The light source depicted in FIG. 1 may be any conventional type of light source such as fluorescent tubes. Since the source of light is conventional, it is not described or shown in detail herein.
The bafile can also be used as a window screen or exteriorly of a building to prevent undesired sunlight from hitting the building from certain angles and affecting the furnishings and personnel therein. For instance, it may be desirable that the low sun of the morning and the low sun of the late afternoon be prevented from entering the building. A system of baffles, therefore, arranged in a particular pattern, could be directed to the south, in the case of the Northern hemisphere, thereby obscuring the sun at the desired times and permitting to enter at the other times.
The louver system can also be used as a grill for the passage of air, being used to direct the air in a particular direction, or its primary purpose may be to obscure the vision of the sources of the air. In the case of grills used for air-conditioning, the purpose is two-fold, that of directing the air in a particular direction and also as a visual block against seeing the interior of the airduct which is not always tidy.
It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the light-ray baffle construction may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A light-ray bafile comprising a pair of complementary U-shaped channel supports, a plurality of channels interposed between and supported by said supports, a plurality of baflles, a spring clip pivotally mounting said baffles about their vertical axis on said channels, and means for holding said channel supports in fixed relationship to a light source.
2. A light-ray bafile comprising a pair of complementary U-shaped channel supports, a plurality of channels interposed in parallel relationship between and supported by said supports, a plurality of battles, a spring clip pivotally mounting said baflle-s about their vertical axis on said channels and being individually selectably positionable thereon, and means for holding said channel supports in fixed relationship to a light source.
3. A light-ray batfle comprising a pair of complementary U-shaped channel supports, a plurality of channels interposed in parallel equally spaced relationship between and supported by said supports, a plurality of batfles, a spring clip pivotally mounting said baflies about their vertical axis on said channels and being individually selectably positionable thereon, and means for holding said channel supports in fixed relationship to a light source.
4. A light-ray bafile comprising a pair of complementary U-shaped channel supports, a plurality of channels interposed in parallel equally spaced relationship between and supported by said supports, a plurality of baffles, a spring clip pivotally mounting said baffles about their vertical axis on said channels and being individually selectably positionable to either perpendicular or colinear relationship with respect to said channels, and means for holding said channel supports in fixed relationship to a light source.
5. In a light-ray bafile including a plurality of baffles, means for aligning said baflies in parallel arrays, said means including a plurality of elongated U-shaped channels from which said baflles are supported in uniformly spaced relationship, said channels being provided with notches at each end, said notches extending transversely across the bights of said U-shaped channels and partially up the sides thereof, a support member comprising a pair of parallel walls, each containing a plurality of uniformly spaced apertures, said apertures'having an upper portion and a lower portion, said lower portion being sized slightly wider than said U-shaped channels and having a straight margin, said upper portion being substantially wider and deeper than said U-shaped channels, said U-shaped channels being slidably moved in said upper portion and being dropped into engagement with said margin in said lower portion, the notches of said channels being disposed over the straight margins of said apertures in snugfitting engagement therewith, said upper portion and lower portion of said aperture being centrally aligned whereby the lateral sides of said aperture have a shoulder defining the separation of the upper portion from said lower portion, the walls of said support members being spaced sufficiently to permit each notch of said U-shaped channels to be in engagement with a straight margin in opposing walls whereby said U-shaped channels are maintained in parallel relationship between said walls, and means for rigidly holding said walls in fixed relationship to each other.
6. A hanger clip for use in a light-ray bafile which includes a U-shaped channel support mounting having a bight and parallel sides, said hanger clip comprising a U-shaped element having parallel sides connected by a bight, the parallel sides of said element being provided with lower longitudinal margins, the parallel sides of said element being spaced to provide overlap of said channel support and being provided with flanges which extend inwardly beneath the longitudinal margins of the parallel sides of the channel support, the bight of said element being provided with a transverse slot which extends substantially across said bight and continues substantially across one of the parallel sides of said element, said last named parallel side also being provided with a second elongated slot which intersects said first slot, said first and second slots having substantial width and being mutually perpendicular whereby the permit the insertion of a threaded member containing a nut thereon, means adjustably mounted on the bight of said element for contacting the bight of said channel support and urging the ends of the parallel sides of said channel support into compressive engagement with said flanges whereby said channel support is securely clamped to said hanger clip, clip mounting means rigidly secured to said hanger clip for mounting said hanger clip to a fixed structure, said clip mounting means comprising an elongated member having a first transverse fiat surface at one end and a second transverse flat surface inwardly spaced from the same end, said first and second flat surfaces mutually facing each other, said second fiat surface being movable with respect to said first flat surface, and adapted to move toward said first surface, said member and first fiat surface being adapted to pass through said first and second elongated slots, means for moving said second flat surface toward said first fiat surface, and means for securely clamping the bight of said element between said surfaces, said member being provided at its other end with means for rigidly mounting said member to a fixed structure.
7. A hanger clip for use in a light-ray bafile which includes a U-shaped channel support mounting having a bight and parallel sides, said hanger clip comprising a U-shaped element having parallel sides connected by a bight, the parallel sides of said element being provided with lower longitudinal margins, the parallel sides of said element being spaced to provide overlap of said channel support and being provided with flanges which extend inwardly beneath the longitudinal margins of the parallel sides of the channel support, the bight being provided with a transverse slot which extends substantially across said bight and continues substantially across one of the parallel sides of said element, said last named parallel side also being provided with a second elongated slot which intersects said first slot, said first and second slots having substantial width and being mutually perpendicular whereby to permit the insertion of a threaded member containing a nut thereon, means adjustably mounted on the bight of said element for contacting the bight of said channel support and urging the ends of the parallel sides of said channel support into compressive engagement with said flanges whereby said channel support is securely clamped to said hanger clip, and clip mounting means rigidly secured to said hanger clip for mounting said hanger clip to a fixed structure, said clip mounting means comprising an elongated member having first and second nuts threadedly mounted thereon, said member being inserted in said first elongated slot, said second nut being inserted in said second elongated slot, and said first nut being brought into facewise engagement with the bight of said element for securely clamping said element to said member, said member being provided at its other end with means for rigidly mounting said member to a fixed structure.
8. A hanger clip for use in a light-ray bafile which includes a U-shaped channel support mounting having a bight and parallel sides, said hanger clip comprising a U-shaped element having parallel sides connected by a bight, the parallel sides of said element being provided with lower longitudinal margins, the parallel sides of said element being spaced to provide overlap of said channel support and being provided with flanges which extend inwardly beneath the longitudinal margins of the parallel sides of the channel support, the bight of said element being provided with a transverse slot which extends substantially across said bight and continues substantially across one of the parallel sides of said element, said last named parallel side also being provided with a second elongated slot which intersects said first slot, said first and second slots having substantial width and being mutually perpendicular whereby to permit the insertion of a threaded member containing a nut thereon, said second slot being spaced substantially below the inner surface of the bight of said element thereby separating said inner surface and said second slot by a pair of opposite shoulders, means adjustably mounted on the bight of said element for contacting the bight of said channel support and urging the ends of the parallel sides of said channel support into compressive engagement with said flanges whereby said channel support is securely clamped to said hanger clip, and clip mounting means rigidly secured to said hanger clip for mounting said hanger clip to a fixed structure, said clip mounting means comprising an elongated member having first and second nuts threadedly mounted thereon, said member being inserted 7 in said first elongated slot, said second nut being inserted in said second elongated slot, said first nut being brought into facewise engagement with the bight of said element for securely clamping said element to said member so that said channel support may not be released from said member until the spacing between said first and second nuts is sufiicient to permit said second nut to pass through said second elognated slot, said member being provided at its other end with means for rigidly mounting said member to a fixed structure.
9. In a light-ray 'bafile assembly including a plurality of U-shaped elongated channels containing a plurality of elongated slots, a rotatable bafile comprising an elongated flat sheet and a flange extending outwardly from one side of said sheet along the entire width of said sheet, and a plurality of spring-clips, said flange also extending outwardly from the other side of said sheet and containing a first centrally located diamond-shaped aperture above the center of said sheet, said diamond-shaped aperture having four points so located that two of the points lie in a plane of said bathe and two lie in a plane perpendicular to said baffie, said sheet containing a second clearance aperture below said first aperture, a springclip inserted through one of said elongated slots of the channel and the diamond-shaped first aperture of the baflle, said spring clip engaging opposite points of the diamond-shaped aperture so that said bame can be aligned perpendicular to or parallel to the longitudinal axis of said channel, the second aperture being of suificient size to provide clearance for the portion of said spring-clip which extends through the first aperture whereby to rotatably mount said baffle on said channel.
10. In a light-ray baflle assembly including a plurality of U-shaped elongated channels containing a plurality of elongated slots, a rotatable 'baflle comprising an elongated fl-at sheet, and a flange extending outwardly from one side of said sheet along the entire width of said sheet, said flange also extending outwardly from the other side of said sheet and containing a first centrally located diamond-shaped aperture above the center of said sheet, said diamond-shaped aperture having four points so located that two of the points lie in a plane of said baflle and two lie in a plane perpendicular to said baflle, said sheet containing a second clearance aperture below said first aperture, and spring-clip means comprising a spring wire having a large ar-cuate bend and a narrow neck inserted through one of said elongated slots of the channel and the diamond-shaped first aperture of the bafile, said spring-clip engaging opposite points of the diamond-shaped aperture so that said baflie can be aligned perpendicular to or parallel to the longitudinal axis of said channel, the second aperture being of sulficient size for providing clearance for the portion of said springclip which extends through the first aperture, said diamond-shaped aperture having a pair of diagonally opposite corners to enable said sheet to be selectably positioned either in alignment with or perpendicular to said channel.
11. In a light-ray bafile including a plurality of baflles, means for aligning said baflles in parallel arrays, said means including a plurality of elongated U-shaped channels from which said baffles are supported in uniformly spaced relationship, said channels being provided with notches at each end, said notches extending transversely across the Ibights of said U-shaped channels and partially up the sides thereof, a support member comprising a pair of parallel walls, each containing a plurality of uniformly spaced apertures, said apertures having an upper portion and a lower portion, said lower portion being sized slightly wider than said U-shaped channels and having a straight margin over which the notches in said U-shaped channels are disposed, said upper portion 0 being substantially wider and deeper than said U-shaped channels whereby said U-shaped channels may be slidably moved in said upper portion and dropped into engagement with said margin in said lower portion, the notches of said U-shaped channels engaging with the straight margins of the opposing walls, the walls of said support members being sufiiciently spaced to permit such engagement whereby said U-shaped channels are maintained in parallel relationship between said walls, and means for rigidly holding said walls in fixed relationship to each other.
12. In a light-ray baffle including a plurality of baffles, means for aligning said batfies in parallel arrays, said means including a plurality of elongated U-shaped channels from which said baffles are supported in uniformly spaced relationship, said channels being provided with notches at each end, said notches extending transversely across the bights of said U-shaped channels and partially up the sides thereof, and a support member comprising a pair of parallel walls, each containing a plurality of uniformly spaced apertures, said apertures having an upper portion and a lower portion, said lower portion being sized slightly wider than said U-shaped channels and having a straight margin, said upper portion being substantially wider and deeper than said U-shaped channels, said U-shaped channels being slidably moved in said upper portion and being dropped into engagement with said margin in said lower portion, said upper portion and lower portion of said aperture being centrally aligned whereby the lateral sides of said aperture have a shoulder defining the separation of the upper portion from said lower portion, the notches of said channels being disposed over the straight margins in said aperture in snug-fitting engagement therewith for securing said channels to said support member, the walls of said support member being spaced sufliciently so that each notch of said U-shaped channels is in engagement with a straight margin in opposing walls whereby said U-shaped channels are maintained in parallel relationship between said walls.
13. In a light-ray bafile assembly including a plurality of U-shaped elongated channels containing a plurality of elongated slots, a rotatable bafi le, said baffle including an elongated flat sheet and a flange extending outwardly from one side of said sheet along the entire Width of said sheet, said flange also extending outwardly from the other side of said sheet and containing a first aperture above the center of said sheet, said first aperture containing a plurality of opposite points, said sheet containing a second aperture below said first aperture, and a springclip for mounting said bafiles to said elongated channels, said spring-clip comprising a spring wire having a large arcuate bend, a narrow neck, and a pair of ends protr nding outwardly from said narrow neck, said springclip being inserted through one of said elongated slots and said first aperture and engaging said points in said first aperture to enable said sheet to be selectably rotated to any number of predetermined positions, said baffles being locked therein by engagement between said spring-clip and a pair of opposite points in said first aperture, said second aperture being of suflicient size for providing clearance for the portion of said spring-clip which extends through said first aperture.
14. In a light-ray baffle assembly including a plurality of U-shaped elongated channels containing a plurality of elongated slots, a rotatable baflle, said baflle including an elognated flat sheet and a flange extending outwardly from one side of said sheet along the entire width of said sheet, said flange also extending outwardly from the other side of said sheet and containing a first squareshaped aperture above the center of said sheet, said sheet containing a second aperture below said first aperture, and a spring-clip for mounting said baffles to said elon- 9 gated channels, said spring-clip comprising a spring wire having a large arcuate bend, a narrow neck, and a pair of ends protruding outwardly from said narrow neck,
7 said spring-clip being inserted through one of said elongated slots and said first aperture and engaging a pair of diagonally opposite points in said first square-shaped aperture to enable said sheet to be selectably positioned either in alignment with or perpendicular to said channel, said second aperture in said sheet being of sufficient size for providing a clearance for the portion of said spring-clip which extends through said first aperture as said sheet is pivoted.

A LIGHT-RAY BAFFLE COMPRISING A PAIR OF COMPLEMENTARY U-SHAPED CHANNEL SUPPORTS, A PLURLITY OF CHANNELS INTERPOSED BETWEEN AND SUPPORTED BY SAID SUPPORTS, A PLURALITY OF BAFFLES, A SPRING CLIP PIVOTALLY MOUNTING SAID BAFFLES ABOUT THEIR VERTICAL AXIS ON SAID CHANNELS, AND MEANS FOR HOLDING SAID CHANNEL SUPPORTS IN FIXED RELATIONSHIP TO A LIGHT SOURCE.
