(Cl. 15-506) This invention relates to marking means and particularly to a marking pen. Still more particularly, the invention relates to a marking pen particularly constructed for painting signs, such as in super markets and the like.

Various types of marking pens are known to the prior art. These include marking pens having a barrel or the like with marking material therein which are constructed to mark on paper, etc. The pens of the prior art devices do not provide a renewable pen nib and when the nib or end portion of the marking pen has become worn or used the entire marking material must be disposed of and a new material inserted therein. Such results in relatively short life for the pen and additional expense for the user of the pen. Attempts in the prior art devices to provide suitable gripping means and renewable points for the absorbent material have been unsatisfactory.

in accordance with the present invention the deficiencies of the prior art devices have been overcome. More particularly, marking pen means are provided whereby the nib portion of the pen can be continuously replaced as it becomes worn, making the life of the pen and nib means much longer and reducing the cost of frequently replacing the entire absorbent portion of the pen. Also, suitable gripping means are provided and the absorbent material is adjustable relative thereto to the desired position to provide a renewable pen nib.

The pen means of the invention includes holder means. Absorbent marking means are received by the holder means and are retained therein, preferably by the use of clip means. By adjusting the clip means the absorbent means can be extended from the holder means so that the point or nib portion of the absorbent means is renewed.

In accordance with a preferred specific embodiment of the invention a marking pen having a head is provided and a removable handle is secured thereto. An absorbent marking material is received by the head with a portion of same projecting therefrom to form a pen nib. Clip means are preferably provided and initially engage the bottom of the base. The clip means has side portions engaging the sides of the absorbent material to position the absorbent material positively relative to the base. As the nib portion of the absorbent material becomes worn the absorbent material is adjusted relative to the clip means so that a new nib portion is provided, thus making substantially the entire felt usable.

Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide new pen means.

Another object of the invention is to provide new pen means having a renewable nib.

A still further object of the invention is to provide new pen means with an adjustable absorbent material therein having a nib portion and including means to grip or mount the absorbent material so a new portion of same can be used as the nib when wear occurs.

Another object of the invention is to provide new pen means whereby the necessity for frequent changing of the nib is eliminated.

Various other objects, advantages and features of the invention will become apparent to those skilled'in the art from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

The following is a description of a preferred specific embodiment of the new pen means of the invention, such being made with reference to the drawings whereon the same reference numerals are used to indicate the same or similar parts and/0r structure. It is to be understood that such discussion and description is not to unduly limit the scope of the invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, a preferred specific embodiment of the pen means of the invention is shown generally at 5 and includes a holder or head 7 which, in the preferred embodiment, has two relatively narrow sides 9 and 1-1, two relatively

13 and 15, and a closed end 16. The head 7 is preferably open at the other end portion. In practice, the relatively narrow sides 9 and 111 can be formed from a flange bent at right angles from one or both of the

sides

13 and 15. The head can, of course, be constructed in any suitable manner.

Means to hold the head are preferably provided and in the preferred specific embodiment shown in the drawings such includes a handle 17 which can be knurled on all or a portion of the outside surface thereof as shown at 19 (FIG. 1). The handle 1'7 can be constructed of a hollow or tubular member as shown in the drawings and closed at the outer end by a plug or the like shown at 21.

Preferably, the handle 17 is removably mounted on the head 7. One manner of accomplishing this is shown in the drawings wherein a mounting bolt 23 is provided and the head end portion 25 thereof engages the inner surface of the closed end 16 of the head 7 with the shank portion of bolt 23 projecting through an opening in head 7. The shank end portion of the mounting bolt 23 passes through the handle 17 and is threadedly mounted in the closed end or plug 21 of the handle.

A single piece of absorbent material 27 is positioned in the head 7 and snugly received therein with a portion 29 of the material 27 extending from the head to form a pen nib. The absorbent material is preferably of such size and shape to initially substantially fill the base 7 with the nib portion 29 projecting therefrom.

Means are preferably provided with the pen of the invention so that the absorbent material 27 can be adjusted outwardly as the nib portion 29 becomes Worn in use. Such is shown in the drawings as a clip member 31 which is desirably formed of wire and is positioned within the head 7 with the base portion 33 of the clip 31 in en gagement with the closed end 16 of the head 7. As the nib portion 29 of the absorbent material 27 becomes worn in use such can be trimmed, cut-away or a new nib portion provided merely by adjusting the absorbent material outwardly relative to the head 7 by first releasing the

This adjustment is done while the clip 31 and absorbent material are out of the head 7. The absorbent material is always substantially rigid relative to the head 7 since the base portion 33 of the clip member 31 is always in engagement with the closed end 16 of the head 7 and a portion of the

35 and 37 are adjacent side 13 of head 7. As will be apparent, substantially all of the absorbent material 27 can be utilized and the pen can be constructed so that a relatively long piece of material 27 is used, thus making the pen means usable over a relatively long period of time.

The head and handle portions of the pen of the invention can be formed of suitable materials, such as metals, plastics, etc. The absorbent material 27 can be of various constructions including felt-like materials known to the art and such are preferably relatively firm so that distinct lines can be drawn on paper and the like.

While the invention has been described in connection with a preferred specific embodiment thereof, it will be understood that this description is intended to illustrate and not limit the scope of the invention, which is defined by the claims.

I claim:

1. Pen means comprising, in combination, a holder having four closed sides and an elongated flat closed end fixedly connected to said sides, said holder being open at the end thereof opposite from said closed end and being free of obstructions on the inner surface of said sides, a handle removably mounted on the outer surface of said closed end of said holder and projecting outwardly therefrom, a relatively long length of ink absorbent felt material positioned in said holder and forming the ink reservoir of said pen means and with an end portion thereof projecting from said open end of said holder and forming the pen nib, said felt material being initially of size and shape to substantially fill said holder, said felt material being the only ink reservoir in said pen means, and clip means positioned Within said holder and having an elongated straight base portion in abutting engagement with the inner surface of said closed end of said holder and extending substantially the entire distance thereacross from one side of said holder to the opposite side thereof, said clip means having integral spaced side portions extending outwardly from said closed end toward said open end of said holder and being positioned along and in abutting engagement with said one side and said opposite side of said holder, the outermost end portions of each of said side portions of said clip means being removably connected to said felt material to adjustably mount said felt material in said holder, said felt material being extendable relative to said open end of said holder and said clip means for use of same as the pen nib, said clip means being of size and shape to rehaving two narrow sides, two wide sides, an elongated fiat closed end and being open at the other end thereof, said holder being free of'obstructions on the inner surface of said sides, a handle having one end thereof positioned in abutting engagement with the outer surface of said closed end of said holder and projecting outwardly therefrom, a bolt having the head end portion thereof engaging the inner surface of said closed end of said holder with theshank portion of said bolt passing through said closed end and being removably connected to said handle to mount said handle on said holder, at relatively long length of ink absorbent felt material positioned in said holder and forming the ink reservoir of said pen and having an end portion thereof projecting from said open end of said holder and forming the pen nib, said felt material being initially of size and shape to substantially fill said holder with said nib projecting from said holder, said felt'material being the only ink reservoir in said pen, and a Wire clip positioned within said holder, said clip having an elongated straight base portion positioned in abutting engagement with said inner surface of said closed end of said holder and extending substantially entirely across said holder from one of said narrow sides to the other of said narrow sides, said clip having substantially parallel side portions extending from the ends of said base portion at approximately right angles to said base portion and positioned in abutting engagement with said narrow sides of said holder, the outermost end of each of said side portions of said clip being bent inwardly at approximately a right angle to said side portions and insertable into said felt material at any portion therealong to adjustably position and hold said felt material relative to said holder and said clip, said felt material being extendable from said open end of said holder and said clip for use of same as the pen nib, said clip being of size and shape to receive and hold said length of felt material in all extended positions of use, said pen being constructed and adapted to receive an instant drying writing-ink in said felt material for storage therein and transfer from said pen nib in use with said felt material being extendable relative to said holder and said clip to provide a new pen nib upon Wear of said nib in use.

Claims

1. PEN MEANS COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, A HOLDER HAVING FOUR CLOSED SIDES AND AN ELONGATED FLAT CLOSED END FIXEDLY CONNECTED TO SAID SIDES, SAID HOLDER BEING OPEN AT THE END THEREOF OPPOSITE FROM SAID CLOSED END AND BEING FREE OF OBSTRUCTIONS ON THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID SIDES, A HANDLE REMOVABLY MOUNTED ON THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID CLOSED END OF SAID HOLDER AND PROJECTING OUTWARDLY THEREFROM, A RELATIVELY LONG LENGTH OF INK ABSORBENT FELT MATERIAL POSITIONED IN SAID HOLDER AND FORMING THE INK RESERVOIR OF SAID PEN MEANS AND WITH AN END PORTION THEREOF PROJECTING FROM SAID OPEN END OF SAID HOLDER AND FORMING THE PEN NIB, SAID FELT MATERIAL BEING INITIALLY OF SIZE AND SHAPE TO SUBSTANTIALLY FILL SAID HOLDER, SAID FELT MATERIAL BEING THE ONLY INK RESERVOIR IN SAID PEN MEANS, AND CLIP MEANS POSITIONED WITHIN SAID HOLDER AND HAVING AN ELONGATED STRAIGHT BASE PORTION IN ABUTTING ENGAGEMENT WITH THE INNER SURFACE OF SAID CLOSED END OF SAID HOLDER AND EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY THE ENTIRE DISTANCE THEREACROSS FROM ONE SIDE OF SAID HOLDER TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE THEREOF, SAID CLIP MEANS HAVING INTEGRAL SPACED SIDE PORTIONS EXTENDING OUTWARDLY FROM SAID CLOSED END TO-
