No. 115,731 4 Claims. (Cl. 160-91) This invention pertains to window structures and is particularly directed to a rainproof ventilating window arrangement.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a ventilating window which may be easily adjusted from fully closed to fully open position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a ventilating window which may be readily utilized in place of a conventional double-hung window.
A further object is to provide an adjustable ventilating window having a double pane construction in which one pane is moved horizontally in parallel relationship to the other pane to obtain the desired window opening condition.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a ventilating window structure which is fully rainproof and storm-proof in any adjusted position.
And it is also an object to provide a ventilating window structure in which access may be readily had to the various .glass pane surfaces for cleaning.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is an inside elevation of a rainproof ventilating window structure incorporating the features of this invention.

As an example of one embodiment of this invention, there is shown a window structure having a frame or casing formed by the top jamb header 16, the Vertical jamb members 17 and 18, and the sill 19 all rigidly connected together and suitably fixed in the window opening 20 in the building wall 21. A center header 22 is fixed at its ends 23 intermediate the ends of the vertical jamb mem- 'bers 17 and 18. Over the outside of the top jamb header 16, FIG. 3, is fixed the exterior jamb header 24 by screws 25 entering the wall header 26 and screws 27 entering the top jamb header 16. A suitable drip cap 28 is secured by screws 29 to the exterior jamb header 24 to receive and deflect water from the siding 30. An interior casing 31 has a turned over end 32 which slips behind the casing clip 33 held to the top jamb header 16 by a screw 34 while a screw 35 secures the interior casing 31 to the wall header 36. A glass support sash piece 37 is fixed at the outer edge of the top jamb header 16 for supporting the upper edge of the top pane of glass 38, the glass 38 ice being secured by a suitable interior sash moulding 39. A suitable glass support angle 40 is fixed to the top outer edge of the center header 22, the lower edge of the glass 38 being secured in place by the interior sash moulding '41. Glass support mouldings 42 and '43 are similarly fixed at the outer edges of the vertical jamb members 17 and 18 to appropriately support the top pane 38 rigidly in sealed condition in the frame 15.
The lower ventilating portions of the window structure comprises the fixed lower outer glass pane 56 and the mov-' able lower glass pane 56a. The center header 22 has an outwardly downwardly sloping under surface 44 provided with the sash piece '45 fixed thereto by suitable screws 46 adapted to receive the upper edge of the glass 56, a suitable sash moulding a securing the glass in the sash piece 45. The side edges of the glass 56 is similarly se cured by suitable sash pieces 47 and 48 attached to the vertical jamb members 17 and 18 of the window frame. The lower edge of the glass 56 is supported in a base frame 49 which rests upon the outer edge of the downwardly outwardly sloping top surface 50 of the sill 19. Suitable drain openings 51 having closure screens 52 are provided in the base frame 49. The lower outer glass 56 is provided with a series of holes 53 in which is placed a rubher or plastic grommet or seal 54 whose opening is closed by a suitable screen 55.
The inside lower glass pane 56a is arranged to be moved to and from the lower outside glass 56 while held in vertical parallel relationship with the same to vary the amount of ventilation or to close off the lower portion of the window structure when no ventilation is desired. To this end the movable inside lower glass 56a is provided with ventilation holes 57 located above the screened openings 53 in the lower outside glass 56. The movable glass 56a is encased at its topedge in a frame piece 58 having a sloping upper face 59 which closely fits adjacent the under surface v44 of the. center header 22. The bottom edge of the glass 5611 is supported in the moulding 60 having'a sloping bottom surface 6 1 which closely fits adjacent the top surface 50 to the sill 19. A suitable rubber or plastic seal 62 is fixed by suitable clips 63 for c-losingthe drain openings 51 when the glass 5641 is moved to closed position outwardly toward glass 56 at which time the outer face 64 of the glass 56a is pressed against the inside abutment surfaces 65 of the grommets 54 so as to seal off the screened openings 55. g
To control the movement of the glass 56a as described above, the side edges of the glass 56a are. carried in vertical side mouldings 66 to which are fixed the vertical tracks 67 having the straight portions 68 and the arcuate portions 69 with the cut-away portions 70 and the removal notches 71. The weight of the movable glass 56a is'carried in the mouldings '68 and 66, and the tracks 67 which have rollers 72 journaled on suitable pins 73 carried in the lower ends of the tracks 67 and which ride on the surface 50 of the sill '19.
The actuating mechanism for the window glass 56 comprises a pair of clevises 74 and 75 journaled on suitable bolts 76 carried in the vertical jamb members 17 and '18. Studs 77 are fixed on the outer ends of the clevises 74 and 75 and on the outer ends of which studs are journaled rollers 78 which fit between the arcuate and straight surfaces 69 and 68 of the tracks 67 fixed to the glass pane 56a. Worm wheel segment teeth 79 are formed on the clevises 74 and 75 which operate in the worms 8!) which are journaled in suitable bearings '81 and-82 in the vertical jamb members 17 and 18. i The worms are simultaneously rotated by an operating crank 83 fixed on the crank shaft 84 journaled in suitable bearings 85 and 86 intermediate the ends of the sill 19. cable drum 87 is fixed to the crankshaft :84 to which are fixed the operating cables 88 and 89 which operate over the idler pulleys 90 journaled on pins 91 carried in the bottom portions of the vertical jarnb members 17 and 18 at each end of the sill 19 and are attached to and wrap around the actuating drums 92 which are fixed to the Worms '80 so that operation of the crank 83 causes rocking of the elevises from the closed position 93 of the window to the open position 94.
When the glass 56a is moved to fully opened position 96 by extreme movement of the clevises to position 94 the rollers 78 assume a position 95 and the vertical tracks '67 and window glass the position 96 directly below the slotted area 97 in the center header 22. At this position the glass may be grasped by placing the fingers through the holes 57 and lifted up into the slots 97 so that the rollers 78 are now aligned with the removal notches 71 in the tracks 67 whereupon the window glass 56 may be swung outwardly at the bottom releasing the tracks 67 from the rollers 78 and then removed from the window frame structure for cleaning as required.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendent claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A rainproof ventilating window structure comprising in combination:
(a) a frame having,
(b) a center header having an outwardly sloping under surface,
() a sill having an outwardly downwardly sloping top surface parallel to said center header under surface,
(d) vertical jamb members interconnecting said center header and sill,
(e) an outer glass pane fixed to said center header,
sill, and vertical jamb members,
(f) a movable inner glass pane inside of said outer glass pane,
(g) means for movably supporting said movable inner glass pane for movement on said sill upper surface including,
(h) means to hold said movable inner glass pane parallel to said outer glass during sloping vertical movement on said sill upper surface,
(i) screened vent holes in the lower portion of said outer glass pane,
(j) vent holes in the upper portion of said inner glass pane positioned above said vent holes in said outer glass pane,
(k') and actuating means for said means holding said movable inner pane operable to move said inner glass pane to-and-from said outer glass pane between the sloping under surface of said center header and the sloping top surface of said sill.
2. A rainproof ventilating window structure comprising in combination:
(a) a frame having,
(b) a center header having an outwardly sloping under surface,
(c) a sill having an outwardly downwardly sloping top surface parallel to said center header under surface,
(d) vertical jamb members interconnecting said center header and sill,
(e) an outer glass pane fixed to said center header, sill, and vertical jambmembers,
(f) a movable inner glass pane inside of said outer glass pane,
(g) means for movably supporting said movable inner glass pane for movement on said sill upper surface including,
(h) means to hold said movable inner glass pane parallel to said outer glass during sloping vertical movement on said sill upper surface,
(1') screened vent holes in the lower portion of said outer glass pane,
(j) vent holes in the upper portion of said inner glass pane positioned above said vent holes in said outer glass P (k) actuating means for said means holding said movable inner pane operable to move said inner glass pane to-andfrom said outer glass pane between the sloping under surface of said center header and the sloping top surface of said sill,
(l) and inwardly'facing seals around said vent holes in said outer glass pane adapted to be engaged by said inner glass pane to close off said vent holes in said outer glass pane when said inner glass pane is moved to outwardly closed position of said rainproof ventilating window.
3. A rainproof ventilating window structure comprising in combination:
(a) a frame having,
(b) a center header having an outwardly sloping under surface,
(0) a sill having an outwardly downwardly sloping top surface parallel to said center header under surface,
(at) vertical jamb members interconnecting said center header and sill,
(e) an outer glass pane fixed to said center header, sill, and vertical jamb members,
f) a movable inner glass pane inside of said outer glass pane,
(g) means for movably supporting said movable inner glass pane for movement on said sill upper surface including,
(11) means to hold said movable inner glass pane parallel to said outer glass during sloping vertical movement on said sill upper surface,
(i) screened bent holes in the lower portion of said outer glass pane,
(j) vent holes in the upper portion of said inner glass pane positioned above said vent holes in said outer glass pane,
(k) actuating means for said means holding said movable inner pane operable to move said inner glass pane toand-from said outer glass pane between the sloping under surface of said center header and the sloping top surface of said sill,
(l) inwardly facing seals around said vent holes in said outer glass pane adapted to be engaged by said inner glass pane to close ofi said vent holes in said outer glass pane when said inner glass pane is moved to outwardly closed position of said rainproof ventilating window.
(m drain openings between the lower edge of said outer glass pane and the outer portion of said upper sloping surface of said sill,
(n) and a seal on the lower portion of said inner glass pane adapted to engage and close said drain openings when said inner glass pane is moved to said outwardly closed position of said rainproof ventilating window.
4. A rainproof ventilating window structure comprising in combination:
(a) a frame having,
(b) a center header having an outwardly sloping under surface,
(c) a sill having an outwardly downwardly sloping top surface parallel to said center header under surface,
(d) vertical jamb members interconnecting said center header and sill,
(e) an outer glass pane fixed to said center header, sill, and vertical jamb members,
(f) a movable inner glass pane inside of said outer glass pane,
(g) means for movably supporting said movable inner glass pane for movement on said sill upper surface including,
(It) means to hold said movable inner glass pane parallel to said outer glass during sloping vertical movement on said sill upper surface,
(i) screened vent holes in the lower portion of said outer glass pane,
(j) vent holes in the upper portion of said inner glass pane positioned above said vent holes in said outer glass pane,
(k) actuating means for said means holding said movable inner pane operable to move said inner glass pane to-and-from said outer glass pane between the sloping under surface of said center header and the sloping top surface of said sill,
(l) and further means in said center header and said holding means for said inner glass pane effective when said inner glass pane is moved away from said outer glass 6 pane to fully open position of said rainproof ventilating window to enable said inner glass pane to be lifted upwardly by its ventilating holes and removed from the Window structure for cleaning of the facings surfaces of both of said glass panes.

A RAINPROOF VENTILATING WINDOW STRUCTURE COMPRISING IN COMBINATION: (A) A FRAME HAVING, (B) A CENTER HEADER HAVING AN OUTWARDLY SLOPING UNDER SURFACE, (C) A SILL HAVING AN OUTWARDLY DOWNWARDLY SLOPING TOP SURFACE PARALLEL TO SAID CENTER HEADER UNDER SURFACE, (D) VERTICAL JAMB MEMBERS INTERCONNECTING SAID CENTER HEADER AND SILL, (E) AN OUTER GLASS PANE FIXED TO SAID CENTER HEADER, SILL, AND VERTICAL JAMB MEMBERS, (F) A MOVABLE INNER GLASS PANE INSIDE OF SAID OUTER GLASS PANE, (G) MEANS FOR MOVABLY SUPPORTING SAID MOVABLE INNER GLASS PANE FOR MOVEMENT ON SAID SILL UPPER SURFACE INCLUDING,
