HAT-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,342, dated November 25, 1884.

To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 represents a hat-rack attached to the back of theater-chairs; Fig. 2, a sectional view on the line was in Fig. 1,showing the hatrack enlarged. Fig.3 is a section on the line y y in Fig. 2 looking to the left. Fig. 4 represents a top or plan view showing in dotted lines the position which the rack may assume.

The object of my invention is to make a cheap and inexpensive hat-rack, which can be readily attached to the back of a seat, more particularly to theater chairs or seats, upon which the occupant can hang his hat or other articles, and which will swing in either direction,so as not to interfere with or prevent persons from passing in or out between the seats.

My invention consists in a combination of the pivoted hook or arm upon which the hat or other article is hung, and its holder by which it is attached to the back of the seat or chair, as hereinafter described, and also in the special mechanisms by which the pivot is formed, and the shoulder or stop hereinafter fully described.

In the drawings, A represents the back of a seat or its equivalent.

B represents a clamp or holder whichis secured to the back of the seat A, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This holder is made with suitable flanges or projections to slip upon the top edge 01' the back of the seat, as shown, and I preferably secure it to the back of the seat by means of a screw, 0.

D is a projecting pin on the top of the holder B, and E is a shoulder on the top of the holder B.

F is a hook or arm made of such forms as to be adapted to receive and hold the hat or such articles as are ordinarily hung upon a hook or pin of a hat-rack. lhis hook or arm F has a hole in one end adapted to slip upon the pin or projection D in such a manner as to be susceptible of being turned thereon.

G is a thumb-screw adapted to be screwed upon the upper end of the pin or projection D, and hold the hook or arm F thereon. The projecting shoulder E forms a stop to prevent the hook or arm F from revolving aters can hang his hat or other article upon the hook or arm F, and it can be swung in either direction, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 4, to admit of people passing in front of him in either direction by simply swinging the hook or arm F, as shown and described.

I do not limit my invention to the exact shape or form or proportions shown in the accompanying drawings. I may-make the holder B of such shape as to adapt it to be applied to the backs of other seats besides those ordi narily used. in theaters. I may apply it to the backs of any seats, so that the person sitting behind the seat to which the rack is applied will have a hook or arm directly in front of him upon which he can hang his hat or other article.

Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the holder B, the pin or projection D, the pivoted hook or arm F, and thumb-screw G, all constructed, arranged, and operating as shown and described.
