IN V EN TOR. [00 H Az'mb/w/y/z J/t BY 7 M 4 ATTORN s United States Patent 3,082,902 BGX WITH SLIDE COVER AND IIANG-UP DEVICE Lud H. Kimbrough, Jr., Richmond, Va., assignor to Ideal Fishing Float Company, Inc., Richmond, Va., a corporation of Virginia Filed Mar. 20, 1961, Ser. No. 97,001 4 Claims. (Cl. 220-18) The present invention relates generally to a combination slide-type box and hang-up device by means of which goods sold in multiple lots or parts may be conveniently packed and displayed for display, sale and shipment.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved combination slide-type box.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a box construction with an improved locking arrangement and by means of which the box may be suspended, for example, from a display rack.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide improved means of merchandising goods having multiple parts or components.
Many other features, advantages and additional objects of the present invention will become manifest to those versed in the art upon making reference to the detailed description which follows and the accompanying sheets of drawings in which a preferred structural embodiment of a combined slide-type box and hang-up device is shown by way of illustrative example.
On the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a display rack containing a plurality of combined slide-type boxes and hang-up devices in accordance with the principles of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken generally on line Il-ll of FIGURE 1 and illustrating details of construction of the combined slide-type box and hang-up device;
IGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view of the box of FIGURE 2 taken on line IIIIII of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is an isometric view of the box per see with the slide-type cover partially removed.
As shown on the drawings:
The combined slide-type box and hang-up device of the present invention is shown generally at and as illustrated in FIGURE 1, three units identified at A, B and C are shown suspended from a hook 1'1 projecting from a display rack 12. The devices are intended to contain plural parts or components of goods having multiple parts or components. One good illustrative example is a box suitable for containing a plurality of swivel-casting lead sinkers wherein the fisherman will desire to have a plurality of such sinkers and perhaps a plurality of such boxes each containing a corresponding plurality of sinkers in different size classifications.
Each combined unit 10 comprises a box 13 having a bottom wall .14, upstanding side walls 16 and 17 and upstanding end walls 18 and 19. In the form of the invention illustrated and as is clearly depicted in FIGURE 4, the box 13 may be somewhat rectangular in configuration so that the side walls 16 and 17 are somewhat longer than the end walls 18 and 19.
Each side wall and 17 has formed at the top margin thereof an outwardly projecting flange 20 and 21, respectively.
The bottom wall 14 has formed on the inside surface thereof a plurality of strengthening ribs 22 which extend across the bottom wall 14 laterally between the side walls 16 and :17 and which are spaced from one another longitudinally along the length of the box.
A cover is shown generally at 23 and has a flat upper surface 24 as well as a flat parallel lower surface 26. At
ice
the side margins of the cover along the longitudinal edges and at one end margin there is formed an integral depending flange. The portion of the flange along the end wall is indicated at 27, while the portions extending along the longitudinal edges are identified at 28.
The lowermost edges of the flanges 28 are offset inwardly as at 29, thereby to underlie the flanges 20 and 21 on the box '13. Further, the flanges 2 8 are notched as at 30 (FIGURE 4), thereby to terminate the flanges 28 short of the opposite end of the cover and facilitating the formation of a throat or opening by means of which the cover may readily be located in position with the bottom surface 26 resting on the upper margins of the walls 16, 17, 18, 1d and on the flat surfaces provided by the flanges 20 and 21 on the box 13. When relative sliding movement of the cover occurs with respect to the box 13, the flanges 20 and 21 will enter the throat or mouth with the flanges 29, 29 underlying the flanges 20, 21 and the cover can then be closed to completely overlie the box until the flange 27 engages against the end wall 19.
Longitudinally inwardly of the flange 27, the cover 23 is formed with a dimpled embossment 31. The spacing dimension between the flange 27 and the embossment 31 is such as to form a seating recess for the end wall 19. Thus, as the cover 23 is advanced on the box 13, a snapon engagement will occur as the embossment 31 rides over the edges of the end wall 19. Accordingly, the cover 23 may be temporarily locked on the box and whenever it is desired to shift the cover 23, a sufficient axial force is applied between the box and the cover to again ride the embossment 31 over the edge of the end wall 19. The locking device thus provided is also useful in the event the box is separated from the hang-up device, for example, if the fisherman is using the container in his tackle box.
In accordance with the principles of the present invention, the hang-up device comprises a generally rectangular sheet form member provided on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The width of the hang-up device is either the same as or less than one of the width or length dimensions of the box 13 with which it is associated. In the present illustrative embodiment, the width of the hang-up device is made less than the width of the end walls 18 and 19. Accordingly, one end of the hang-up device, as shown at 40 is arranged inwardly of the end wall 19 and is engaged against the outside surface 41 of the bottom wall +14, with the pressure-sensitive surface adhesively adhered to the bottom wall 14. The hang-up device projects as at 42 beyond the end wall 18 and is reversely folded as at 43 with the pressure-sensitive surface folded back upon itself, thereby to form a suspension tab 44. Thus, the suspension tab 44 is formed of two separate legs, the long le 46 which underlies the bottom wall 14 and a shorter leg 47 which extends to the end wall 18, whereupon the hang-up device is offset as at 2% and adhesively adhered to the outside surface of the end wall 18, as at 49.
With the cover 23 in place, the hang-up device envelops the end edge of the cover 23 as at 50 and is offset to form a short longitudinal extending leg 51 which adhesively engages the upper surface of the cover 23 designated at 24, thereby locking the cover 23 in firm assembly with the box.
The suspension tab 44 is provided with an aperture 52 extending through both legs 46 and 47 of the suspension tab 44, thereby facilitating engagement with the hook 1 1. The box 13 may conveniently comprise a molded plastic material which is transparent, thereby affording visibility of the contents. Further, the outside surface of the hang-up device is suitable for bearing identifying indicia.
Although minor modifications might be suggested by those versed in the art, it should be understood that I wish to embody within the scope of the patent warranted hereon, all such modifications as reasonably and properly come within the scope of my Contribution to the art.
