Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEICED -EBENZER MATHERS, OF FAIRMQN T, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-PENS.
Specicationforming part ofi-Letters Patent No. 30,825, dated December 4, 1860. A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER MATHERs,of
the town of Fairmont, in the count-:y of Mag rion and State of Vrginia, ha\f'e invented a' new and useful Improvement in Writing Implements; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description of' the construction and operation of the same, reference being' made by letters tothe accompanying drawing, which also forms a part of this specification.
The nature andpurpose of my invention arethe combination of ahair-pencilbrush or other similar agrangement of vhair with any ordinary writingpeu to` facilitate the opera' tion 'of-writingby saving the timeand trouble of flrequently dipping the peni into, the ink, as a'page or-more4 may be' written with my implement after it shall havefbeenonce tube without producing such compression as to prevent the capillary attraction ot' the interstices of the-brush. The point of the brush' should protrude from the tube far enough to comewithin about one-eighth of an inch of the Vnib of the pen. However, the exact distance ,willdepend upon the size of the ,brush and pen, and upon other circum stanceswhich will readily direct the person arlanging it. vCarernustbe taken on the one hand that the brush shall not come down sov far as to blot or smear the paper, and. on the otherhandthat it shall reach down and cover as'much of the split in the pen as possible, sc; aso afford a regular and constant supply o .1n
lain-pen. sponge or other porous material placed in the resents a longitudinal section ofth'e implement herein described, A is the holder; B, the Y .adapted to many of those forms now in use.
I do not claim, however, the invention of the tubular -o r other form of pen as a .fount- Neither do I "clam the use' of hollow of the pen for the purpose of regulating ,the flow of ink from arfonntain or reservoir vwithin or above, as my implement is to be supplied with ink by-dipping it into the ink holder, as in the use of the common pen, and the ink is taken up and retained by the capillaryattract-ion of the interstices between the hairs of the brush, and is yielded with- .out compression in a regular and continuous flow in exact proportion to the demand at the point of the peu, for the separation of the nibs in producing heavy or delicate-writing withmy implement is at once the cause and the precise measure ot' the supplyof ink from the hair-pencil above.
What I do claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use oi" a hair-pencil brush or other similar arrangement of hair in contact with a metallic or other writing-pen for the purposeof securing a continuous and spontaneous flow of ink to the pen while writing,
arranged and operating in the mannen as above substantially setforth.
