Claims. (Cl. 120-33) This invention relates, in general, to copyholders, and has particular relation to copyholders for holding work sheets or other sheets generally upright in order, for example, to permit a stenographer, typist or other person, to transcribe, or copy what is on the sheet.
One of the main objects of the present invention is the provision of an attachment for a more or less standard form of copyholder for the purpose of providing a copy holder having a sheet holding surface of increased area for taking, for example, accounting sheets and other sheets of relatively large size Another object is to provide a copyholder attachment having a flange along the margin thereof for positioning in juxtaposition to a flange along the margin of the copyholder, and clip means engageable over the juxtaposed flanges to hold the attachment to the copyholder with the sheet supporting surface of the attachment substantially coplanar with the sheet supporting surface of the copyholder.
Another object is to provide clip means having an arm extending therefrom for disposition across the back of the sheet supporting surface of the attachment to brace the same when the attachment is applied to the copyholder.
Another object is to provide a copyholder attachment having a second flange along its margin opposite the margin for positioning in juxtaposition to the margin of the copyholder, and a leg pivoted to the upper portion of the second flange and adapted to be swung rearwardly to position to support the adjacent side of the attachment in generally upright position; also such a leg which is adapted to be folded to position generally parallel with the second flange. Another object is to provide an extendable liner for use when the attachment is applied to the copyholder, and more particularly an extendable liner comprising a magnetic bar shiftable to different positions up or down along one side of the copyholder, a line guide extending from the bar across the sheet supporting surface of the copyholder, and a line guide extension connected to the line guide and adapted to be extended across the sheet supporting surface of the attachment when the attachment is applied to the copyholder.
Another object is to provide a copyholder attachment of the character described, having various features of novelty and advantages, and which is particularly characterized by its simplicity in construction, its minimum number of parts, its economy in manufacture, the ease and convenience with which it may be attached to a more or less standard form of copyholder, and its effectiveness in use.

Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to FIGURES 1 through 5, the copyholder 1 comprises a sheet supporting surface 2 having flanges 3 and 4 along its opposite generally upright margins, a flange 5 along its upper margin, and a flange 6 along its lower margin.
The copyholder is preferably formed of suitable metallic material, particularly where a liner having a magnetic bar for holding the same in place on the copyholder is employed, as will bepresently described. Other materials for' the copyholder and the attachment are, however, contemplated within the scope of the present invention.
. The copyholder 1 is provided with a back part 7 having a back surface 3 which has flanges 9 and 14 along itsopposite generally upright margins, a flange 11 along its upper margin and a flange 12 along its lower margin.
The back part 7 is pivoted to the upper portion of the sheet supporting surface 2 by pivot pins 13 passing through the flanges 3 and 9 at one side as shown in FIGURE 1 and through the flanges 4 and 10 at the other side, as shown in FIGURE 2. Rubber or other suitable foot pieces 14 are secured to the bottom flanges 6 and 12, for example, by screws 15, for supporting the copyholder on a desk or other support. The lower portion of the back part 7 is adapted to be swung rearwardly about the pivots 13 to position, as shown in FIGURES l and 2, for supporting the copyholder in generally upright but inclined position, as illustrated. When in such supporting position, the flanges 5 and 11, which are interned, cooperate as shown in FIGURE 5.
The back part 7 is also adapted to be folded to position generally parallel with the sheet supporting surface 2. When in such position,- the flanges 9 and 14) are folded between and generally parallel with the flanges 3 and 4. This provides compactness and permits the copyholder to lie flat, for example, on a desk, table, or the like.
The attachment 18, which is also preferably formed of suitable metallic material, has a sheet supporting sur face 19 provided with flanges 24 and 21 along the opposite generally upright margins thereof. The sheet supporting surface 19 also has a flange 22 along its upper margin, and a flange 23 along its lower margin. Rub her, or other suitable foot pieces 24, are secured to the bottom flange 23, for example, by screws 25, for supporting the attachment, when in place on a desk or other support.

tion to the flange 4 of the copyholder 1. A pair of metallic or other suitable spring clips 28 are then engaged over the juxtaposed flanges 20 and 4t as shown in FIGURES 2 and 4. These clips 28 hold the attachment 18 to the copyholder with the sheet holding surface 19 substantially coplanar with the sheetsupporting surface 2. This provides a sheet supporting surface of increased area for taking, for example, accounting sheets and other sheets of relatively large size. The clips 23 are of U-shaped form and when applied, the legs of the clips are snapped into place over the flanges 20 and 4-.
A leg 30 is pivoted at its upper end to the upper porti-on of the flange 21, for example, by a pivot pin 31 passing through the flanges 21 and leg 30. A rubber or other suitable foot piece 32 is suitably secured at 33 to the lower end of the leg 34 for supporting this leg on a desk or other support. The leg 30 is adapted to be swung about its pivot 31 to position as shown in FIGURE 3 for supporting the adjacent side of the attachment '18 in generally upright but inclined position as shown. The ieg 30 is also adapted to be folded to position inside and generally parallel with the flange 21.
Suitable line markings 3'5, numbered, for example, as shown, are provided along the .lefthand upright margin of the sheet supporting surface 2, as shown in FIGURE 1. Similar line markings 36 are provided along the lefthand upright margin of the sheet supporting surface 19.
A magnet bar 38 is shiftable to diiferent positions up or down along the flange 3, and is held magnetically to this flange 3 in any desired position. A line guide 3-9 is secured to this bar 3-8 at 40, and extends across the sheet supporting surface 2 and, therefore, across the sheet supported on such surface. A line guide extension 41 is pivoted at 42' to the line guide 39 and when swung to extended position, as shown in FIGURE 1, extends across the sheet supporting surface 19 of the attachment 18 and, therefore, across the extended portion of the sheet sup ported upon the surface 19. With the line guide exten sion 41 thus extended, a line guide is provided for the increased sheet supporting area and the larger size sheet supported upon the combined surfaces 2 and 19. When the attachment 18 is not used, the extension 41 may be folded back over and parallel with the line guide 39 which will then serve as a line guide for a smaller sheet on the surface 2.
Magnetic bars 44 act magnetically through the sheet or sheets and on the surfaces 2 and 19 to hold the sheets in place. These bars 44- may be removed by simply lifting the same from the surfaces 2 or 19 against the magnetism holding them in place and may be applied in any desired position.
While the line guide 39 and line guide extension 41 may be formed of any other suitable materials, in one preferred embodiment of the invention they are formed of a suitable plastic material. The plastic material may be colored or otherwise of a character that will be relatively opaque, or relatively translucent, or at least not fully transparent.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGURES 6 and 7, like parts are indicated by primed reference numerals corresponding with those used in FIGURES 1 through 5. In this form of the invention, the leg 30 of FIGURES 1 through is omitted. Instead, one leg of each clip 28' has an integral arm '48 extending therefrom for disposition across the back of the sheet supporting surface 19" of the attachment 18 to brace the same when the attachment is applied to the copyholder. The back part 7 then operates to support the sheet supporting surfaces 2' and 19" in upright but inclined position in use. Reinforcing ribs 49 may extend along the arms 48 for reinforcing the same.
The embodiments of the invention disclosed in the drawings and the specification are for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be expressely understood that said drawings and the specification are not to be construed as a definition of the limits or scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.
I claim:
1. A copyholder comprising a first section, having a sheet supporting surface, and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, a back part having flanges disposed vertically along its opposite vertical margins, said flanges of said back part being disposed between and in juxtaposition to the flanges of said first section and pivoted to the upper portions thereof for swinging movement of the lower portion of said back part rearwardly to position for supporting the copyholder in generally upright position, a second section disposed along one side of said first section, said second section having a sheet supporting surface and flanges extending vertical-1y along opposite vertical margins of said surface, one of the vertically extending flanges of said second section being disposed against the outer surface of one of the vertically extending flanges of said first section, and snapon resilient clip means having legs snapped over said lastmentioned flanges, with said flanges confined within and frictionally engaged by the legs of said clip means to hold said second section to said first section with the sheet supporting surfaces of said first and second sections in coplanar relation.
2. A copyholder comprising a first section, having a sheet supporting surface, and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, a back part having flanges disposed vertically along its opposite vertical margins, said flanges of said back part being disposed between and in juxtaposition to the flanges of said first section and pivoted to the upper portions thereof for swinging movement of the lower portion of said back part rearwardly to position for supporting the copyholder in generally upright position, a second section disposed along one side of said first section, said second section having a sheet supporting surface and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, one of the vertically extending flanges of said second section being disposed against the outer surface of one of the vertically extending flanges of said first section, snap-on resilient clip means having legs snapped over said last-mentioned flanges, with said flanges confined within and friotionally engaged by the legs of said clip means to hold said second section to said first section with the sheet supporting surfaces of said first and second section in coplanar relation, and a leg pivoted near its upper end to the upper end of the other flange on said second section, for swinging movement of the lower end of said leg rearwardly to position for suporting the adjacent side of said second section in generally upright position.
3. A copyholder comprising a first section, having a sheet supporting surface, and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, a back part having flanges disposed vertically along its opposite vertical margins, said flanges of said back part being disposed between and in juxtaposition to the flanges of said first section and pivoted to the upper portions thereof for swinging movement of the lower portion of said back part rearwardly to position for supporting the copyholder in generally upright position, a second section disposed along one side of said first section, said second section having a sheet supporting surface and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, one of the vertically extending flanges of said second section being disposed against the outer surface of one of the vertically extending flanges of said first section, snap-on resilient clip means having legs snapped over said last-mentioned flanges, with said flanges confined within and frictionally engaged by the legs of said clip means to hold said second section to said first section with the sheet supporting surfaces of said first and second sections in coplanar relation, and an arm integral with one leg of said clip means and disposed across the back of the sheet support{ ing surface of said second section to brace the same.

A copyholder comprising a first section, having a sheet supporting surface, and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, a back part having flanges disposed vertically alongits opposite vertical margins, said flanges of said back part being disposed between and in juxtaposition to the flanges of said first section and pivoted to the upper portions thereof for swinging movement of the lower portion of said back part rearwardly to position for supporting the copyholder in generally upright position, a second section disposed along one side of said first section, said second section having a sheet supporting surface and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, one of the vertically extending flanges of said second section being disposed against the outer surface of one of the vertically extending flanges of said first section, snap-on resilient clip means having legs snapped over said last-mentioned flanges, with said flanges confined within and frictionally engaged by the legs of said clip means to hold said second section to said first section with the sheet supporting surfaces of said first and second sections in coplanar relation, a magnet bar shiftable to different positions along the other vertically extending flange of said first section, a line guide secured to said magnet bar and extending across the sheet supporting surface of said first section, and a line guide extension pivoted to said line guide for swinging movement to extended position extending across the sheet supporting surface of said second section, and to retracted position confined substantially to the extension of said line guide across the sheet supporting surface of said first section.

A copyholder comprising a first section, having a sheet supporting surface, and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, a back part having flanges disposed vertically along its opposite vertical margins, said flanges of said back part being disposed between and in juxtaposition to the flanges of said first section and pivoted to the upper portions thereof for swinging movement of the lower portion of said back part rearwardly to position for supporting the copyholder in generally upright position, a second section disposed along one side of said first section, said second section having a sheet supporting surface and flanges extending vertically along opposite vertical margins of said surface, one of the vertically extending flanges of said second section being disposed against the outer surface of one of the vertically extending flanges of said first section, snap-on resilient clip means having legs snapped over said last-mentioned flanges, with said flanges confined within and frictionally engaged by the legs of said clip means to hold said second section to said first section with the sheet supporting surfaces of said first and second sections in coplanar relation, and magnetic bar means acting magnetically through sheets on said sheet supporting surfaces for holding said sheets in place on said surfaces.

Claims (1)

1. A COPYHOLDER COMPRISING A FIRST SECTION, HAVING A SHEET SUPPORTING SURFACE, AND FLANGES EXTENDING VERTICALLY ALONG OPPOSITE VERTICAL MARGINS OF SAID SURFACE, A BACK PART HAVING FLANGES DISPOSED VERTICALLY ALONG ITS OPPOSITE VERTICAL MARGINS, SAID FLANGES OF SAID BACK PART BEING DISPOSED BETWEEN AND IN JUXTAPOSITION TO THE FLANGES OF SAID FIRST SECTION AND PIVOTED TO THE UPPER PORTIONS THEREOF FOR SWINGING MOVEMENT OF THE LOWER PORTION OF SAID BACK PART REARWARDLY TO POSITION FOR SUPPORTING THE COPYHOLDER IN GENERALLY UPRIGHT POSITION, A SECOND SECTION DISPOSED ALONG ONE SIDE OF SAID FIRST SECTION, SAID SECOND SECTION HAVING A SHEET SUPPORTING SURFACE AND FLANGES EXTENDING VERTICALLY ALONG OPPOSITE VERTICAL MARGINS OF SAID SURFACE, ONE OF THE VERTICALLY EXTENDING FLANGES OF SAID SECOND SECTION BEING DISPOSED AGAINST THE OUTER SURFACE OF ONE OF THE VERTICALLY EXTENDING FLANGES OF SAID FIRST SECTION, AND SNAPON RESILIENT CLIP MEANS HAVING LEGS SNAPPED OVER SAID LASTMENTIONED FLANGES, WITH SAID FLANGES CONFINED WITHIN AND FRICTIONALLY ENGAGED BY THE LEGS OF SAID CLIP MEANS TO HOLD SAID SECOND SECTION TO SAID FIRST SECTION WITH THE SHEET SUPPORTING SURFACES OF SAID FIRST AND SECOND SECTIONS IN COPLANAR RELATION.
