Claims priority, application Italy Nov. 6, 1958 5 Claims. (Cl. 222-26) The present invention relates to a device for effecting simultaneous changing of the price and the compositlon of the mixture for use in pumps delivering a mixture of two liquids.
My copending patent application, Serial No. 742,687, filed June 17, 1958, now Patent No. 3,022,919, concerning a device to perform simultaneously the changing of the price and the composition of the mixture in the distributors of a mixture of two liquids, there has been described a device formed by a connected system of drums having parallel axes, each of which is mechanically coupled with members permitting the actuation of gear wheels in engagement with a driving cone, the drums being provided with a series of-rows of holes evenly distributed over generatrices and directrices of the drums and into which a peg is inserted in a predetermined position for each row of each drum while a rake-like member adapted to be displaced along the axes of the drums and fixed from time to time in the desired position carries stops against which the individual pegs strike during the simultaneous rotation of the drums. Thus, the drums can perform rotary movements which are alike or are different each from the other in each case thereby to cause the displacement of pairs of gears in engagement until they are brought to a required coupling position.
It has been found that the device described in my aforementioned copending patent application can be easily adjusted to indicate the measure of the distribution flow of the above mentioned mixture.
For this purpose, in fact, it is suiiicient to actuate the stepped cone of the comptometer head so that said cone will perform a number of revolutions corresponding to the total flow of the mixture of the two liquids, through a differential device capable of adding the flow of the metering device associated to one of the two liquids (for instance the main liquid) ,to the flow of the metering de vice associated to the other liquid (the secondary liquid) which is connected, through a fixed group of gears, to one of the gears of said stepped cone, according to the proportions of the desired mixture.
In order that the present invention maybe readily carried into eiiect, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein the single FIGURE is a side view, partly in section, of a preferred embodi ment of the device of the present invention.
With reference to said drawing, 22- indicates a stepped cone of a conventional comptometer head, which is provided with ten gears, whose corresponding teeth num bers are arranged in arithmetical progression.
An adjustment means includes two plates 61 which have bores through which a shaft 61:: passes. A pinion 62 with a hub 62ais located between plate 61 and is moved along shaft 61a when plates 61 are raised and lowered by a manually controlled linkage 63.. Hub. 62a has a key located in a key groove 6112 so that shaft 61a turns with pinion 62. A gear 64 is rotatably mounted on a pin between plates 61 and meshes with pinion 62. Plate 62 cannot only be raised and lowered but also be turned about shaft 61a with gear 6'4 so that g ar 6 4 can be placed. in meshing engagement with any selected gear of the gear cone 22in order to effect rotation at different rotary speeds, of shaft 61a. Shaft 61a is connected Patented Mar. 12, 1963 to a fiow control device 88 for a secondary liquid, such as, for example, oil. The flow control device 88 perunits the discharge of a certain amount or volume of the secondary liquid at a constant rotary speed and when the rotary speed is increased, the amount of discharged second liquid is increased in the same ratio.
Thus, said shaft will effect a number of revolutions n whose ratio to the number of revolutions n of the stepped cone depends on toothed wheel of said cone 22 which meshes with the coupling gear 64, said ratio being variable for instance between 1 and 0.1.
From the shaft 61a the motion is transmitted, through I a reduction gearing composed of the wheels 89 and 89,
-90 and 91, to a differential gear means, indicated altogether by 92, said differential gear means receiving also the motion of a shaft through a pair of gears 93 and 94. The differential gear means 92 includes sun gears 70 and-71, planetary gears 72 and 73, and a carrier gear 97 for the planetary gears 72, 73. Shaft 95 is driven by a meter 96 for the main liquid, and the main liquid is discharged, shaft 95 will turn at a number of revolutions n Within the differential gear 92, the motion of the shafts 61a and 95 is added up, so that the shaft K actuating the stepped cone 22 and receiving the motion from the carrier 97 of said differential gear means 92, will effect a number of revolutions n which i proportional to the sum of the number of revolutions n and n An indicator means connected to shaft K will indicate the volume of the discharged mixture of the two liquids, and an indicating means connected to shaft 61a will indicate the amount of the discharged secondary liquid passing through flow control means 88.
Adjustment plates 61 are axially shifted and to a position corresponding to the ratio of the components of the mixture, and consequently also corresponding to the price of the mixture, such price evidently being related to the ratio of differently priced components.
This causes a further advantage, sInce the arrangement will be in condition to provide, in addition to the price, also the ratio of the components of the mixture, indicating for instance the percentage'or proportion of onev of the two components (the oil for instance).
Since these simultaneous operations are carried through the action of connected elements the correct employment 'of the arrangement is assured. Any disagreement between the two readings reveals immediately a failure'in the device.
From the abovesaid and from the inspection of the drawing the great relevance of the improvements introduced in the device in question can be easily understood.
In effect, in the previous device the revolution angle of the stepped cone was proportional to the total amount of oil and gasoline delivered, since the metering device 96 for the main liquid (gasoline) and flow control means 88 for the secondary liquid (oil) are such as to present a displacement varying in a complementary way so that upon an increase in the displacement, and therefore of the flow, of the main liquid metering device, a decrease of the flow of the secondary liquid occurs. In accordance with the present invention, the shaft of the stepped cone 22 turns a number of revolutions corresponding'to the sum of the revolutions of the flow control device 88 and of' the metering device 96, and consequently to the amounts of liquids flowing through the devices.
This solution represents aconsiderablesimplification also in respect to the other, already known, solutions, in which, still retaining the employment of the adding: device, the rotation rates of the two means 88, 96 are: subjected to the conditions imposed by a suitably devised change gear.
However, according tothe utilization just described control means: for the second dicator means for indicating of this device, the same problem is resolved through theemployment of the gear cone, which is a characteristic element of any comptometer head, effecting that this cone, perform not only the specific function of determining the price of a mixture, but also the subsidiary function of defining the desired and corresponding ratio of the two components of the concerned mixture.
It will be observed that in the specification and in the drawing a stepped cone has been described and represented which is composed of ten gears instead of nine, as it is used in the conventional stepped cone employed to this purpose, said nine steps of the cone being represented by gears whose teeth are in an arithmetical progression, so that the smallest wheel will have for instance 8 teeth while the largest will have 72 teeth.
However, by adding a gear (having a number of teeth which is ten times that of the smallest one) the utilization range of said cone is enlarged, thus obtaining the remarkable advantage (if a distributing-mixing device is desired in which the two devices 88, 96 be equal, or in the case that through suitable gear ratios the shafts 6'10 and 95 perform equal revolution angles for equal flows) of obtaining both the mixture of said two liquids or (if desired) the delivery of one only of the two components of the mixture, that is the delivery of one component in the pure state.
In this way, arranging the adjustment plate 61 upon said tenth wheel, the result will be achieved that, through the action of the differential gear, the shaft of the main metering device will keep standstill, so that the distribution of the secondary liquid in the pure state will become possible. If, however, the adjustment plate 61 is brought out of engagement with the gear cone, only the main liquid in the pure state can be distributed, since the shaft of the distributing device of the secondary liquid will keep standstill.
Thus, for instance in the field of the petrol pumps, the choice is possible between a mixture having a variable ratio of conventional petrol and petrol of the super type, and conventional petrol only, or super petrol only.
