COMBINED THRASHER AND SEPARATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,065, dated November 18, 1884.
Application filed June 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMns DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quaker Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Thrasher and Separator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my improved thrasher and separator with the frame partly broken away to show the interior construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section in perspective. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line as a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a detail view in perspective of the ribbed receiving-rack.
The present invention has relation to combined thrashers and separators, and the object thereof is to effect a more perfect separation of the straw and grain at the cylinder, and to thoroughly clean the grain from any foreign substances and impurities; and the invention consists in the general construction of the machine, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the machine, provided at its feeding end with a thrashing-cylinder, B, having upon its periphery zigzag ribs a.
In the rear of the cylinder B, and ona plane below it, is located the concave 0, provided with a feed-chute, D, upon which the straw is placed in feeding it to the thrashing-cylinder,
said feed-chute having guides I) at its sides to more readily effect the passage of the straw between the rack and cylinder. The concave O has a central rib, c, and at each side thereof two or more ribs, (1, the upper edge of the ribs being on the same horizontal plane with the feed-chute D at the point where they join it, and their forward or outer ends located under the thrashing-cylinder B. The ribs d for a portion of their length are bent at an acute angle in a direction toward the central rib, c,
so as to converge from the receiving-edge toward the middle of the concave, and thence 1n an outward direction, so as to diverge from the middle to the rear edge, and the rib c at its outer end terminates in a bifurcation, the branches thereof having the same angle as the angular outer ends of the ribs (2. These several ribs constructed and arranged as above described, and shown in Fig. 4, form together channels for the straw and grain, which, in connection with the zigzag ribs or. on the periphery of the roller or cylinder B, act more effectively upon the straw as it passes between them to separate the grain therefrom, while the peculiar angle of the channels formed by the ribs tends to guide the straw and grain toward the center of the machine, and thence outward at an angle to conformwith the zigzag ribs on the cylinder. The concave C at its forward end is provided with. a series of parallel rods, 6, which together form an upwardly-inclined grating to receive the straw and grain from the thrashing-cylinder and deliver it to the endless carriers EF, from whence it passes to a rotary heater or picker, G, of the usual construction, the straw passing in its course onto the forward carrier, H, in front of which is located adelivery-reel, I, to insure a perfect discharge of the straw and prevent any clogging or back action. Below the carrier H is located the vibratory shoe K of any of the usual forms, and also a blast-fan, L, is employed for cleaning the grain, as is common in this class of machines.
The several carriers, thrashing cylinder, shoe, blast-fan, and the rotary beater, also the delivery-reel, receive their motion by suitable belts and pulleys in the ordinary manner.
The frame A is provided with. a dust-conveyer, M, of the usual form and construction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined thrasher and separator, the combination, with a thrashing cylinder having zigzag peripheral ribs, of a concave formed with transverse bent ribs arranged to 5 converge from the receiving edge toward the middle of the concave and to diverge from the middle to the rear edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A combined thrasher and separator com- TOO prising a thrashing-cylinder formed with zighereunto subscribed my name in the presence zag peripheral ribs, a concave formed with of two witnesses. transverse bent ribs, first converging and then diverging, as described, and a dust-conveyer JAMES D AVIS 5 and fan, substantially as and for the purpose Witnesses:
specified. AMos REYNOLDS,
In testimony that I claim the above I have ISAAC N. MEEDER.
