' J. N. STEVENSON.
PLOW.
No. 308,006. Patented Nov. 1.1, 1884.
MENTOR ATTORNEYS WITNESSES @Z M'W N. PETERS, mwmpmo n m Wnslunglon, do.
llsnrnn STATES ATENT FFICEO JAMES N. STEVENSON, OF SALVISA, KENTUCKY.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,006, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed July 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES N. STEVENSON, of Salvisa, in the county of Mercer and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My improved plow, although suitable for use on level ground and as a cultivator after planting, is more particularly intended to be used as a side-hill corn-planter; and its main object or great advantage over the ordinary double shaper and other planters is its adaptability to be worked on steep hillsides and in rocky or trashy land.
The invention consists in a supplementary plow-frame or beam-extension adjustable to either side of the main plow-beam, and in a special construction of thesame to provide for such adjustment, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a corn-planting plow embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
A indicates the main plow-beam; B, its share O, the foot or standard, and D the colter. i
E Eare the handles of the plow, and F the corn hopper or dropper, provided, as usual, with a slide which is controlled by any appropriate hand mechanism-as, for instance, by a hand-lever, I), having its fulcrum at c, and connected by rod or chain (1 c with an arm, .9, on a rock-shaft, f, and with a spring, g, said rock-shaft having an arm, I), that is 0011- nected by means of a rod, 6, with the slide in the corn hopper or dropper F, and the handlever 1) serving to open the slide to drop or deposit the corn, and the spring g to close it.
Ais the supplementary plow-beam or beamextension provided with a shoe, B, a foot or standard, 0, and a colter, D. This plowbeam extension, with its described attachments, is arranged to lie to one side of the rear portion of the main beam A, as shown by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, or to either side of the main beam, as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 2, to do the hillside or special work required of the plow and planter. For this purpose the beam-extension A is fitted to revolve or turn horizontally from the back end of the main beam to opposite sides of the latter, and to this end the connecting parts or ends of said beams A A are slotted horizontally, and connected by a link, G, and pivots k l with each other, as by a hinged joint. WVhen the beam-extension A is swung to a position in line with the main beam or beam portion A, and in rear thereof, the share B and colter D face in a reverse direction to the share B and colter D of the beam A; but when said beam-extension A is swung or folded over horizontally on either side of the main beam A, as shown by full and dotted lines in Fig. 2, then the share B and colter D face in the same direction, but to one side of the advance share B and colter D, and when the beam-extension A is thus adjusted it is held in lock by a tooth, m, on the free end of it engaging with a latch, n, on either side of the main beam A, or by any other suitable means.
A very important advantage of this combined plow and planter is that the horizontallyswinging beam-extension A, with its attached share B, always provides for said share, which operates as a covering-shovel, being on the upper side of the hill when at work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the beam A of the plow and its share B, of the rear beamextension, A, with its attached share B, adjustable to opposite sides of the main beam A, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the beam A of the plow and its share B, of the rear beameXtension, A, with its attached share B, the link G, connecting said beam-extension by pivots k Z with the rear end of the main beam A, and a catch for holding said beam-extension in position when swung horizontally to either D, and pivoted link-connection G, adjustable 710 side of the main beam A, essentially as deor reversible from the rear'end of the main scribed. beam A to opposite sides thereof, substantially 3. In a combined plow and planter, the as shown and described. combination of the main beam A with its at T tached share B and colter D, the hopper or JAMES STEVENSON dropper F, and mechanism for controlling the Witnesses: same, and the horizontally-swinging beam-ex- G. A. FENTON, tension A, with its attached share 13, eolter S. B. XVILsoN.
