IRON CAR-FRAME.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,846, dated November 11, 1884.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT M. CUSHMAN, of Franklin Park, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Iron Car Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of iron car frames or platforms in which tubes are employed running longitudinally in pairs; and the said invention consists in a metal transom-beam constructed to receive the said tubes and the king-bolt; also, in the end beams of the platform, that are made so as to protect the tubes in case of concussion from collision of two trains, and also in the connecting devices between the draft-frame and the tubular platform.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View, partially in section, of the platform at one end of the car. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at w 00. Fig. 3 isa cross-section of the transom-beam at y y, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of a slight modification in the plates of the transom-beam.
The tubes a a areused in pairs, one above the other. and the risk of injury to the tubes will be lessened. The tie-rods m, also shown in said Patent No. 243,762, pass through the said plat form end, and serve to bind the same firmly against the ends of the tubes a.
The transom-beam is made for receiving the king-bolt e and circular bearing-plate f that connect the car-platform to the truck-frame g There is nothing unusual in these parts e f 2 g and they may be of any known character. The transom-beam itself is made of the top plate, h", and the lower or brace plate, 70?. The latter is either passed above the lower tubes of the two middle ranges of tubes, as seen in Fig. 3, or below the same, as seen in Fig. 4. In both instances the plate k is bent diagonally at each side of the bearing-plate f so as to extend up to the top plate, If, and the end portions of 7L2 and k lie fiat against each other, and are welded or riveted.
There is a-clip-piece, 10, upon the end of h, outside the outer tube, a, and another clippiece, 11, at the inner side of the said tube.

only clip and hold the tube, but the inner piece, 11, forms a saddle for the tie-rod m to pass over. Similar clip-pieces, 10 and 11, are applied upon the surface of If at the sides of the inner longitudinal tubes, a.
At the center part, between the plates 71. k there is a king-bolt bearing, Z in the form of an open box or frame, with external flanges that are bolted or riveted to If lo and the king-bolt e passes through the bottom part of this frame into the bearing-plate on the truckframe.
The strut-pieces n are made with flanges, and they are adapted to setbetween the plates If k of the transom-beam, and between the upper and lower longitudinal tubes, a, of the middle ranges of tubes. YVhen the plate 76 passes over the lower tubes a, as in Fig. 3, there will be a clip-piece, 14, around the tube, as shown; but when the plate 70 is below the lower tubes a, as in Fig. 4, then the lower ends of the strut-pieces n will be arched to pass over said tubes.
The brace-bars 0", extending from the lower tubes of the outer pairs of tubes to the plate k may either pass horizontally, as in Fig. 4,
or at an inclination, as in Fig. 3, there being blocking-pieces between the tubes at the outer pairs of tubes a.
Upon the truck-frame there are the ordi-' nary bolster or bearing blocks, 16, and upon the transom-beam there are the shoes 17. These are bolted to the plates 7L2 and 76*, and the struts 18 serve to keep the plates If is at the proper distance apart where the bolts pass through them.
Between the transombeam and the end beam I introduce two parallel tubes, with bolts passing through them, and through the transom-beam and through the end beam, and nuts at 1 hold the parts firmly together. The draft-frame s is provided with a buffer-head,
that is adapted to receive the link or othercoupling.
At the inner end of the draft-frame is abolt, 8 that passes through the cross'heads s s, the ends of which are made with semicircular recesses to slide upon the parallel tubes 1*, and there is a cross pin or head'to this bolt 8 and a helical spring, 8 around such bolt 8 and around the parallel tubes 1" are the abutmerit-tubes r" W, with enlarged ends or collars, the tubes r being between 3 and a, and the abutment-tubes 1' being between the crosshead 8* and the transom-beam. By this construction the spring '8 is compressed between 8* and 8 When the train is in motion, the

The combination, with the pairs of longitudinal tubes a, of the end beams composed of the metal plates a a a, and intermediate wooden plank, b b the tubes passing at their ends into the plank Z), and the bolts securing the parts to the tubes,substantially as set forth.
2. In the transom-beam, the plates 71. 7c, in combination with the tubes, clip-pieces, and struts, substantially as set forth.
3. The abutment-tubes q" r and parallel tubes a", secured between the end beam and the transom-beam, in combination with the cross-heads s" 8, spring 8 and draft-frame and buffer, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the longitudinal tubes to a, end beam, and transom-beam, of the clips 10 and 11, fastened upon the transom-beam, and the tie-rods m, passing over the saddle formed upon the clip 11, substantially as set forth.
