United States Patent Ofifi ce 3,078,107 Patented Feb. 19, 1963 3,078,107 ARTICLE WITH REMOVABLE PICTURE SECTESN Richard E. Loderhose, 84-25 Radnor St, Jamaica Estates, NY.
@riginal application Mar. 3t), 1969, Ser. No. 18,668, new Patent No. 3,024,958, dated Mar. 13, 1962. Divided and this application Jan. 31, 1961, Ser. No. 86,015
6 Claims. (Cl. 281-29) This invention relates to books and more particularly, to novel paper books on the cover or inside pages of the book, an easily detachable picture or pictures.
This invention is a division of Serial Number 18,668, now Patent No. 3,024,958, issued March 13, 1962.
The invention also relates to inexpensive and rapid methods of making the said books.
With respect to books, the cover may be double ply with a removable section in one of such plies, or one or more pages may be doubled with a removable section in one of such double pages.
Many persons, particularly in the younger age groups, collect pictures of favorite persons, such as moving picture stars, singers, athletes in different sports, especially where such pictures carry an autograph of such persons. As a result, it is quite a common expedient to cut or otherwise remove such picture from whatever it may be printed on, whether it be a phonograph record jacket, a box, a book or other article, thus leaving such item or article in a damaged condition and, if it is a container or box, the contents are exposed and may be spoiled, if the contents have not been completely used.
When a picture or page is removed from a book, the value and usefulness of such book is impaired.
When applied to a book cover, the invention permits the removal of an outer picture section of a double cover leaving the second or double portion in complete or intact condition so that the book cover is not impaired and remains to protect the pages of the book.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference is had to the following de. tailed description of typical embodiments thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view showing the inside of a die-cut cardboard blank of a book cover showing the fold or crease lines, glue sections and perforated removable picture section;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the folded blank or cover;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional View of a modified book showing a backing panel for the back panel.
Referring to F168. 1 to 3, inclusive, numeral 50 represents a blank for a book-cover. FIG. 1 shows the four cardboard panels of the book-cover in open position to illustrate the invention. Panel 51 represents the back panel of the cover which receives the stack of printed pages of the book, panel 52 being the inside of the front cover, panel 53 the outside of the backing panel and the long narrow panel 54 takes up the thickness of the stack of pages of the book when completed. The panels are divided by crease lines 55, 56, 57. The front cover panel 52 is provided with a removable picture section 69 defined by a perforated tear outline 61. At the time the blank is made or cut, the crease lines 55, 56, 57 and the tear outline 61 are made simultaneously.
The blank of FIG. 1 may be of heavy cardboard or heavy or lightweight paper and in the book trade books made of such cover weights are known as soft (paper back) or hard bound books. Of course, the invention may also be applied to magazines and the like.
In forming the cover of the invention, glue is applied to the marginal sections of the backing cover 53, as indicated at 6-2, 63. The width of such glue portions may be varied in width and location of the removable picture section 60 of the front cover 52. To allow easy removal of section 60, the gluing or pasting portion should termimate and be spaced a suitable distance from tear lines 6 1.
After the glue is applied, the backing cover 53 is folded inwardly upon and pasted to the inside face of the front cover 52 making the front cover a double ply of paper or cardboard. The outside face 52' of the front cover has imprinted thereon a picture within the outline 6 1. The area 64 within the line 66 may be slightly larger than picture section 60 which has the printed picture of the artist or performer, and may have one or more autographs or may have printed thereon the same picture or wording as on the outside face of the front cover 52 within the area 60 so that when the picture section is removed the cover will be about the same as in its original condition.
If a person desires to remove the picture section 60, it is a simple matter to lift a corner section 60 by passing the point of a knife along the perforated tear outline 61 and then lift the picture section 60 gently along tear outline 61. To facilitate such removal of picture section 60, a starter tab 65 may be provided which may be easily lifted with the finger nail to start the removal of the picture section 60 along tear lines 61.
When the picture section 60 is removed, the picture or printing within the section 64 of the backing cover 53 is exposed and the appearance of the cover is not altered in any substantial manner, nor is the usefulness of the cover destroyed. This also applies if the same principle is applied to one or more pages in the book and in such instance the page is doubled over and printed and scored in the same manner as heretofore described for the cover.
While specific embodiments of the invention and method of making the book cover or pages have been shown and described to illustrate the application of the invention principles, it will be understood that the invention and method of making book covers or book pages may be applied to books, not only may the front cover have the removable picture section, but also the back cover by the addition of an extra backing panel 71 of the back cover 51, without departing from the general spirit of the invention. In this instance, the back panel or cover 51 has a tear outline 70 similar to the tear outline 61 of the front cover panel 52.
What is claimed is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a blank which is adapted to be folded to form a book cover, said blank comprising a cardboard sheet having crease lines defining a back panel, a front cover panel and a cover backing panel, a removable section defined by a perforated tear outline in said front cover panel, said backing panel having a printing section, said backing panel being fold-able upon and behind said front cover panel and when so folded having its marginal edges only adhered to the marginal edges of said front cover panel outside of said tear outline, said removable section being free of adherence to said backing panel for bodily detachment from said book cover by tearing along said tear outline, said removable section overlying said printing section of said backing panel.
2. A book cover comprising a front cover panel, a cover backing panel and a back panel, a removable section defined by a perforated tear outline in said front cover panel, said backing panel having a printing section, said backing panel being foldable upon and behind said front cover panel and when so folded having its marginal edges only adhered to the marginal edges of said front cover panel outside of said tear outline, said removable section being free of adherence to said backing panel for bodily detachment from said book cover by tearing along said tear outline, said removable section overlying said printing section of said backing panel.
3. The book cover as claimed in claim 2 in which the outer surface of said removable section is imprinted with a picture.
4. The book cover as claimed in claim 3 in Which the printed section is imprinted with the same imprinting as the removable section.
5. The book cover as claimed in claim 2 with the addition of a backing panel for the back panel, said back panel having a removable section defined by a perforated tear outline, said backing panel for said back panel having a printing section and being foldable upon and behind said back panel and when so folded having its marginal edges only adhered to the marginal edges of said back panel outside of said tear outline, said removable section of panel of said back panel for bodily detachment from said book cover by tearing along said tear outline of said back panel.
6. A book page comprising a front panel and a backing panel, said front panel having a removable section defined by a perforated tear outline, said backing panel having a printed section, said backing panel being foldable upon and behind said front panel and when so folded having its marginal edges only adhered to the marginal edges of said front panel outside of said tear outline, said removable section being free of adherence to said backing panel for bodily detachment from said book page by tearing along said tear outline, said removable section overlying said printed section of said backing panel.
