EDVARD LINDSLEY AND CHARLES E. LINDSLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STREET-BOX FORv GAS AND WATER SERVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,558, dated November 4,1884.
Application liled December' 19, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancel/vz:
Be it known that we, EDWARD LINDsLnY and CHAs. E. LINDSLEY, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga. and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Streetdox for Gas and lVater Service; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in street-boxes for gas and water service in cities and like places where gas or water is delivered from the main pipes to residences or other places of consumption. In the common boxes in use many objectionable features are found, most prominent among them being the liability to become filled with sand and rubbish 'of various descriptions, and with water or damp sand or mud, which are the key for turning he cock. It is our purpose to provide a street-box which shall be water and gas tight when closed, forming a shield or protection to the cock and relieving it from any weight which may be thrown upon the box, protecting the cock from sand or other injurious matter which accidentally or from of box. IVe accomplish these objects by means ofthe device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, ot' which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the complete invention; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a top view of the upper chamber; Fig. 4. a top view of our invention from a point at the line x. Figs. 5 and 6 are keys; Fig. 7, a section of plug K.
A is a length of ordinary tubing of the length demanded by the depth of supply-pipe, so as to bring the top ot' the box flush with the surface ofthe ground. This is screwed into sleeves G and chamber C, the spaces at F and F being filled with lead or equivalent material, covering and protecting any exposed portion of the thread c and making a rigid and secure filling, adding strength to the pipe at its weakest point and preventing rusting o1" the thread. In the top c are taps or plugs D E, one fitting, as shown, above and the other below, being threaded for the purpose the screw )lues D and E in combination with l s i ing the prongs of key, Fig. 5, in the holes d, when it can be turned and lifted from its seat. The lower plug is removed by the same instrument, and falls into the chamber above the tube A, and, being slightly larger than the same, it is readily pushed aside, so that the key, Fig. 6, can be inserted. This key ts the recess or socket b in the plug K, a hollow integral space, as shown at b, keeping Ithe socket clear from any possible obstruction. A waste-outlet from the house--pipe B at e f is opened when the cock is turned off and drains the pipe B and its connections. g is the usual form of welt for holding the plug K in place, and is covered by the cap I, either screwed or slipped onto the lower end of cock H to exclude sand from the same. The cock is shown closed, the opening c being the waterway. Sustaining the cock are the arms or supports .I J, extending outwardly, and designed to rest upon a stone or other suitable foundation, so that pressure upon the top of the box will not be thrown upon the pipes B B', which would tend to injure or break the connections.
l. A street-box for gas and water service, consisting of a sleeve,G, attached to cock H, and pipe A, in combination with chamber C, said chamber containing the plugs D and E', substantially as set forth.
2. In a street-box, the chamber C,iitted with the pipe A and the sleeve G, said sleeve having arms J J and attached to cock H, subst-antially as set forth,
3. In a street-box,the cock H,having a plug, K, said plug having a space or chamber, b, in
9o its top to exclude dirt, as described, and a `square or oval opening for the reception of a key, combined with the sleeve G, pipe A, and chamber C, said chamber having means for excluding dirt and other matter, sul stantiall y as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 29th day of June, 1883.

G-Eo. C. Tiener, (lino. C. Davies.
