Filed May 12, 1959, Ser. No. 812,654 2 Claims. (Cl. -109) My invention resides in a rocking attachment for cribs and the like.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an electrically powered rocking attachment for connection to a crib or the like to eifect rocking or oscillation thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the foregoing described character which may constitute a unitary part of the crib when initially distributed or may be attached to cribs already in use without appreciable modification thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the foregoing described character which is so constructed and arranged that the same may be readily adjusted for use with cribs of various sizes.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the foregoing described character which, when disassembled, is extremely compact for storage and shipping.
An important object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the foregoing described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation, economical in manufacture, and may be assembled and attached to a crib by other than a highly skilled workman.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:

FIGURE 4 is a transverse sectional view showing a crib having my invention attached thereto;
FIGURE 5 is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 5-5 of FIGURE 3; and
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on the line 66 of FIGURE 3, the leg of a crib being illustrated in section.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in the drawing, I provide a crib 5 having the usual sides 6 and supporting legs 7 or the like at the head and foot thereof and which legs are provided with the usual sockets 8 for accommodating pintles of casters, it being understood that in conjunction with my invention, the casters are removed from the legs for a purpose hereinafter made apparent. Disposed beneath the crib is a framework 9 comprising a pair of crossed tubular members or trusses 10 secured together intermediate their lengths by a pin 11 which may constitute a pivot. The end portions of the trusses 10 have slidably mounted therein the inner ends of hollow rods or members 12.
The outer ends of the rods 12 terminate in right angular and downwardly extending legs 13 provided on their lower ends with door engaging tips or bumpers 14 for supporting the framework 9 a pre-established distance above the floor. The end portions of the trusses 10 are each provided with an opening 15 extending therethrough for selective registry with spaced similar openings 16 extending through the respective inner ends of the rods 12. Drop pins 17, which may have nuts threaded on their 3,975,295 Patented Jan. 29, 1963 shanks if desired, extendthrough the openings 15 and the respective registering openings 16 to maintain the rods 12 in fixed and adjusted relation with the trusses 10.
The upper ends of the legs 13 are'provided with pivots 18 to which are attached the upper ends of depending arms 19, respectively, for oscillation relative to the legs. The arms 19 are disposed in paired relation at each end of the framework 9 with each pair being connected, by means of pivots 20 to a sleeve 21 having its ends slidably receiving therein bars 22 each formed with a plurality of spaced openings 23 for selective registry with an opening 24 formed in the adjacent end of the bar 22 and through which a drop pin 25 extends to maintain the bars in a fixed and predetermined adjusted position within the sleeve. The outer ends of the bars 22 are provided with upwardly extending posts 26 insertable within the sockets 8 of thecrib legs 7 for attaching the crib to the framework in spaced relation above the floor.
Subjacent the pin 11, amounting plate 27 is detachably secured to the framework 9 and has mounted thereon an electric motor 28 equipped with a speed control unit 29 provided with a drive shaft 30. The drive shaft has fixed thereto a crank arm 31 having an eye 32 or the like swiveled to its outer end and to which is attached one end of a looped cable 33. The opposite end of the cable 33 is connected by an eye 34 to one side 6 of the crib, the cable being of a predetermined length to effect rocking or oscillation of the crib when mounted on the framework as hereinafter disclosed.
In use, the framework 9 is disposed beneath the crib 5 and the posts 26 inserted within the sockets 8 of the legs 7 to support the crib by the sleeves 21. When the crib is thus supported, the cable is connected to the eye 34 and the motor energized by being connected to an electric power source. When the motor is energized, the crank arm 31 will be rotated and as a result the crib will be transversely oscillated with the sleeves due to the pivotal movements of the arms 19. A timing device may be placed in circuit with the motor to effect oscillation or rocking of the crib for predetermined periods, if desired.
My invention is such that it may be adjusted to accommodate various sizes of cribs, for instance, with respect to width the bars 22 may be adjusted within the sleeves 21 to position the posts 26 for insertion into the sockets 3 of the legs at the head and foot of the crib, while the rods may be adjusted within the trusses to compensate for the length of the crib. In the latter instance, in certain adjusted positions, the arms 19 may toe in or toe out as the case may be.
By disconnecting the arms from the legs 13, the plate 27 and motor from the framework, and pivoting the trusses to a position one over the other, the entire framework and components may be disposed in an extremely compact and disassembled condition for storage and trans porting. Obviously, the construction of my invention is such that it may be readily assembled and attached to a crib or the like without the employment of highly skilled help.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is, therefore, to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An apparatus for rocking a crib or the like com prising, an elongated framework having extensible end portions for modifying the length of said framework'and being provided with legs, arms pivoted to said legs and work, oscillating'members extending transversely of said A framework and pivotally connected to said pairs of arms,
respectively, said oscillating members having extensible end portions for modifying the length of said oscillating members, said last mentioned portions being provided with posts for insertion Within the caster-sockets formed in the legs of the crib whereby to connect and support said crib on said oscillating members above the fioorfor oscillation by said oscillating members, said end portions being adjustable relative to their respective members to accord with different sizes of cribs for permitting insertion of said posts within the sockets of the cribs, power means mounted on said framework for connection to the crib whereby saidoscillating members are rendered efiective for rocking the crib upon operation of said power means. t
2. In combination, a crib provided with head and foot supports formed with sockets at preestablished and fixed locations, a crib rocking apparatus comprising a framework disposed under said crib between said head and foot supports and having lengthwise extensible end sections for adjusting the length of said framework to accord with the length of said crib, said sections being provided with supporting legs, oscillating means having arms pivoted to said legs and depending therefrom in paired relation at opposite ends of said framework, said means including oscillating members pivotally connected to said pairs of arms, respectively, at the lower ends of said arms, said members extending transversely of said crib and having lengthwise adjustable end portions provided with posts inserted within said sockets for connecting said crib to said members for support thereby, said portions being adjustable. to accord with the width of said crib to permit insertion of said post's into said sockets, and eccentric means mounted on said framework and connected to said crib for actuating said oscillating means to rock said crib.

Claims (1)

1. AN APPARATUS FOR ROCKING A CRIB OR THE LIKE COMPRISING, AN ELONGATED FRAMEWORK HAVING EXTENSIBLE END PORTIONS FOR MODIFYING THE LENGTH OF SAID FRAMEWORK AND BEING PROVIDED WITH LEGS, ARMS PIVOTED TO SAID LEGS AND ARRANGED IN PAIRED RELATION AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF SAID FRAMEWORK, OSCILLATING MEMBERS EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY OF SAID FRAMEWORK AND PIVOTALLY CONNECTED TO SAID PAIRS OF ARMS, RESPECTIVELY, SAID OSCILLATING MEMBERS HAVING EXTENSIBLE END PORTIONS FOR MODIFYING THE LENGTH OF SAID OSCILLATING MEMBERS, SAID LAST MENTIONED PORTIONS BEING PROVIDED WITH POSTS FOR INSERTION WITHIN THE CASTER-SOCKETS FORMED IN THE LEGS OF THE CRIB WHEREBY TO CONNECT AND SUPPORT SAID CRIB ON SAID OSCILLATING MEMBERS ABOVE THE FLOOR FOR OSCILLATION BY SAID OSCILLATING MEMBERS, SAID END PORTIONS BEING ADJUSTABLE RELATIVE TO THEIR RESPECTIVE MEMBERS TO ACCORD WITH DIFFERENT SIZES OF CRIBS FOR PERMITTING INSERTION OF SAID POSTS WITHIN THE SOCKETS OF THE CRIBS, POWER MEANS MOUNTED ON SAID FRAMEWORK FOR CONNECTION TO THE CRIB WHEREBY SAID OSCILLATING MEMBERS ARE RENDERED EFFECTIVE FOR ROCKING THE CRIB UPON OPERATION OF SAID POWER MEANS.
