Jan. 22, 1963 HxRoAKl HIDEYosl-u DOOR CHECK Filed Nov. 20. 1959 IN V EN TOR.
Unie tats 0745101 DOOR CHECK Hiroaki Hideyoshi, l-chome, Shiba-Shiroganedai-machi,
Minato-kn, Tokyo, .tapan Filed Nov. 20, 1959,.Ser. No. v$54,332 Claims prioriw, applicationliapan Nov. 22, v1958 4 Claims. (Cl. 16-54) The invention relates toa door check `wherein both the automatic door closing mechanism and hydraulic shock absorbing mechanism are combined in one unit.
The basic structure of this invention consists in a speed regulating hingemechanismwhich operates at the section `where a door and ay door frame or oor is hingedly connected :by a double cylinder type oil pressure shock absorber made by inserting an internal cylinder having -a check valve into an external cylinder, wherein the mutual rotation of the internal and external cylinders is prevented by providing a spring between the external and the internal cylinders and lby causing the internal cylinder to shift up and down inside of the external cylinder in accordance with the opening and closing of the door by means of the cam means mounted at the top end of the internal cylinder, and thereby regulating the outlet and the inlet of oil between the internal and external cylinders and eventually controlling the automatic door closing power of a spring wound around the external cylinder.
Explanation is made in the rst place with respect to' a butterfly type hinge. An internal cylinder 'having a check valve and a regulating valve at its bottom is -iitted into an external cylinder and the internal cylinder and the external cylinder are fitted by means of a projection and a groove for fitting whereby the internal cylinder is prevented from rotating inside of the external cylinder except `for simply moving up and down and oil is fitted in the internal and the external cylinders. On the top end of the internal cylinder a notched cam is provided forming one body therewith. 'I'lie ydouble cylinder oil pressure shock absorber thus formed is inserted into -a ring body Vbranching out from the hinge wings to be attached to a door and a door frame and thereby two hinge wings are hingedly connected.
The external cylinder of the oil pressure shock absorber is secured to the ring body branching out from the hinge wing to ybe attached to the door frame, and on the other hand, inside of the ring body branching out from the hinge wing to be attached to a door, a pulley or a roller is fixed on an axis and the face of the cam on the top end of the internal cylinder which is always being pushed up lby the spring provided between the internal and external cylinders is caused to contact with the abovementioned pulley-or roller. In this case the iixing of the external cylinder of the oil pressure shock absorber and the pulley or the roller to the respective hinge wing can be made reversely from the abovementioned way. The point is that it is useful as long as such structure wherein they are ixed respectively to separate hinge wings and the pulley or the roller contacting with the face of the cam on the top end of the internal cylinder shifts on the -face of the ca-m on the opening or closing of the hinge wing. In the abovernentioned oil pressure shock absorber the up and down shifting of the internal cylinder is effected by the cam means consisting of the notched cam face on the top end of the internal cylinder and the pulley or roller contacting therewith.
In the drawing:
FIG. 4l is an elevational view of a door hinge constructed in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a vertical section of the door hinge illustrated in FIG. l; and
FIG. 3 is a partial sectional view of a portion of the mechanism illustrated in FIG. 2.
Slhlhl Patented Jan. 22, 1963 vthe structure `of its interior is shown in FIG. 2 and FIG. 1 is a hinge wing to be attached to the door frame, 2 1s a hinge wing to be attached to the door, 3, 3 are ring lbodies branching out from the hinge wing 1, 4, 4' are ring bodies branching out from the hinge wing 2. The ring bodies 3 and 4 and the ring bodies 3 and 4 are respectively put one on the other, and the double cylinder oil pressure shock absorber 7 consists of the plunger 5 and the cylinder `6 inserted into the ring bod- ies 3, 3 `and 4, 4' and the botto-rn of said shock absorber y7 is connected with the ring body 3 and there it is secured by the pin 8. 9 is a coil spring for automatic `door closing located within the shock absorber 7, one end of which is secured to the ring body 4 and the other end is secured to the spring regulating ring Iii which is coaxial with the ring body 4 of hinge wing 2. and the ring body 3. This spring 9 is covered Iby the cylinder 11 and on each top and bottom end of the ring bodies 3 and d there are attached the caps 12, 13. The lower end of spring 9 is secured in an opening drilled in ring 4 and the upper end is held in ring 10 which is secured to external cylinder 6.
In the spring regulating ring 10, that is, in the surface thereof many open holes are cut at appropriate angularly spaced intervals and the strength of the spring 9 is regulated optimally by inserting the end thereof into any optional hole.
In the shock absorber 7, the internal cylinder 5 is inserted into the external cylinder 6 having the spring .14 interposed therebetween, both cylinders maintain an appropriate amount of oil in them -for prevention of their mutual rotation. At the bottom of the internal cylinder 5 the open lhole 15 is provided. At the bottom of the said open hole 15, the ball-shaped check valve 16 is applied elastically by means of the resilient element 17 tted in the lower end of the internal cylinder 5. The upper end surface of the cylinder S is notched in appropriate inclination to form the cam 19 which contacts with the pulley 18 on the axis which is xed to the ring body 4. The cam 19 is so for-med that at the time when the door is closed the pulley 18 comes on the highest part of the cam 19 and at the time when the door is opened the pulley 18 comes on the lowest part of the cam 19 and on the appropriate portion of the lowest part a recess (FIG. 3) for stopping temporarily the door in yopen condition is provided. Further, in the upper exterior surface of the internal cylinder S the vertical groove 20 is cut and the pin 21 rooted in the external cylinder 6 is tted in the groove 2@ thereby preventing the internal cylinder 5 from rotating inside of the external cylinder 6 and permitting same only to make vertical movements.
Corning to explain about the operative mechanism, at the time when the door is closed the pulley 18 stops on the highest part of the cam 19 and with the opening of the door the pulley 18 shifts on the cam 19 from its highest part to the lowest part, therefore the internal cylinder 5 is elevated by the spring 14 inside the external cylinder 6 and the oil inside of the internal cylinder flows out from the open hole 15 into the external cylinder. When the door is automatically closed by the restoration power of the spring 9, the pulley 18 shifts, on the cam 19 from the lowest part to the highest part to cause descent of the internal cylinder 5. The oil inside of the external cylinder ilows into the internal cylinder 5 through the open hole 15.
Further, as there is a hold open recess in the cam 19, the door can be maintained temporarily in opened condition and with a light push the pulley 18 cornes out of the recess and thereafter the door is automatically closed.
22 is the air exhaust port by whichoil leaking -is prevented.
