Description
UNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD G. SI-IAVER, CF NEW' HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SCALPEL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,696, dated November 20, 1860.
To all whom Li may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD G. SI-nxvnn, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Surgi cal Instruments Intended for Cutting Corns and for Scalpels and other Surgical Operations; and I do hereby describe and ascertain my said improved instrument as follows, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l 4is an edge view of the blade of the instrument in its handle. Fig. 2 is a view of the convex side of the same. Fig. 8 is a view of the concave side of the instrument. Fig. Li shows the convex side of the blade chamered oit so as to render the edge thinner than if rounded as in Fig. 2; Figs. 5 and G, sectional views of the blade. Figs. 7 and 8 show the concave surfaces of thin blades; Fig. 9, side view of the blade-concavosconvexed.
My invention consists in forming an instrument suitable for several surgical purposes as well as some other uses.
It consists in forming the blade of a cutting instrument doubly concave-convex or spoon shaped outline, being in general configuration like the bowl ot' an ordinary spoon, the underside being conveXed and the upper side concaved, the rim being either plain or chamfered oiip to a cutting edge, as clearly shown in the figures. By this construction of the blade of the instrument there is great facility given to it in cutting out corns, or in using it as a scalpel. It is obvious that its size may be increased or diminished according to the purposes for which it is intended, and the edges may run around it in a straight plane or it may be somewhat curved from point to shank. T hese peculiarities are fully illustrated in the drawings and need no specific description as any good cutler can readily make the instrument adapted to any purposes required. The advantage of this form is a thinness of the blade so as to be easily sharpened and a rotundity that gives direction to the cutter.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The doubly concave-convex or spoon formed cutting instrument constructed in the manner and for the purposes described.
A. G. SI-IAVER.
