Description

UNWE STATES JOHN H. LUCAS, OF SALAMANCA, NEW YORK.
STEAM-GAGE COCK.
ELZIZEICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent N0. 306,937, dated October 21, 1884.
Applieation filed May 5, 1884. N0 mode1.)
In aZZ w7wm zb mcty concern:
De it knox vn that I, JOHN H. LUOAS, a Citizen ofthe United States, residing at Salamanca, in the county 0f Oattarzmgus and State 0f New York, have invented certain new und usfn1 Improvements in SteamGage (Docks; und I do hereby dec1are that the following is a ful1, clear, und exact deseription 0f the SELUIG, referenee being had t0 the annexed drawings, mztking 21 part 0f this specification, and to the letters and figures 0f referenee marked there on.
Figure 1 0f the drawings is a seetional elewntion 0f a gage-coek constructed according t0 1ny inmution, and Fig. 2 a detail view in section and on an enlarged scale.
The present invention has relation t0 certain new and useful improvements in gztge'-cocks 1'01' steam-boilers; and it eonsists in the several details 01" constructjon, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereimpfter described und e1aimed.
In the accompanying dmwings, A represents the Shell 01 body 0f the cool; ot'the usua1 form und provided with the nozzle a and Stuffingb0x Z), through which passes thehollowstem B, serew-threaded 21t its inner enc1to engge with screw-threads on the interior 0f the Shell 01 body, said Stem having the usua1 -hand-wheel C f01 turning it held thereon bya jam-nut.
The valvespindle is constructed in two see tions, D E, the outer section having itS end adapted t0 receive a suitable wrench f01 operztting it, and its opposite endhaving a feather, c, so that when the section is pushed in a, direetion toward the eeti0n E th'e projeetion will engage with ZL correspondingly-formed notch, (Z, in the end 0f seid section, thus ena-. Ming the valve-stem t0 be turned on its ztxis.
lt Will be notieed that the valve F iS 0f bemispherieal shape, ztnd the Seat e suffieiently coucave t0 f0rm a elose und water-tight joint when the valve is resting thereon.
The essential features 0f my invention 1ie in the particular construetion 0f the 0uter end of the stem B and outer end of the valvespind1e D.
The boxe of the stem B at its extremity is somewhat enlarged to form a space, f, Sufficient in diameter to admit the eircumferential fiange g on the spindle-section D, as shown section being limited by the fiange g abutting against a eireumferential shouldex, h, formed.
by the spaee 01 enlargement of the bore, as hereinbefore deseribed.
A ring, a, 1's passed over the e11d of the Spindle-seetion D, and is of such diameter .as t0 rest against the end of the Stern B, a. packing, k, being interposed between the ring and a stuffing-box, Z. This ring holds tl1e packing in place an d from contact With the flange 011 the spindle-seetion, thereby enabling said seetion t0 freely move back und forth as required, and at the Same ti1ne form a steam 01 water tight joint.
The flange 011 the spindle-seetion in connectiou with the shoulder 011 the stem forma together a means for lin1iting the extent 0f movement of Said section when coupling the tw0 seetions of the mlve-spindle.
The va1ve F is formed with an enlargemei1t, m,which abuts ztg2tinst the end 0f the stem B.
'\Vhen the spindle-seetion D is in the position as shown in Fig. 1 and the stem screwed 0ut sufficiently, the valve F Will be free to move off of the seat e by the pressure of the steam against it; but when t11e stem is screwed into the Shell A far enough to bring the valve tightly against its seat, it will be permanently held there, and by foreing in the spindle-secti0n D uutil the ieather c engages With the notch d 011 the section E the spindle Will be as 0f 011e piece. By then applying a suitable wrench 01 t001 t0 tl1e outer encl of the seetion D the tw0 sections eomposing the spii1dle.
can b e turned 011 its axis, anti by the bemispherieal form 01 the va1ve F zmd the form of tl1e seat e the Sediment can be effeetually ground 0ut while the boile r has 0n a full head 0f steam.
H2tvjng now fu1ly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 seeure by Letters Patent, iS-
l. In a ga-ge-coek, the eombinatiou, with a, hollow screw-threaded Stem, 0f a VEtlV8-SPilldle formed in tw0 sections adapted to be counected 01" diseonneeted from each other, pne of S2tid sections having zt hemispherieal-formed va1ve, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.-
