HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,905, dated October 21,1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, GUSTAVE DE GLYNE, a citizen oi the United States, a resident of New Durham, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful improvement in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates to a detachable heel, which can 'easily be removed or trans ferred from one shoe to another, as necessity may require.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient means, by the use of which the tendency to wear away the heel on one side may be counteracted. I secure this object by constructing the heel in two pieces, the upper part attached to and made part of the sole, the lower part detachable, and when in position secured to the upper portion by means of a vertical screw rigidly connected with a plate on one of the parts, and engaging with a threaded opening in a plate on the other, thetwo parts, when screwed together,

being held firmlyin positionhy a locking device, to be hereinafter described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective elevation of the heel, showing screw which looks the plates. Fig. 2 represents avertical longitudinal section of the heel, showing locking de vice. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a the detachable portionof the heel, showing vertical screw and plate upon which it is secured; Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the upper portion of the heel, which is connected with the sole, showing plate having threaded opening therein. Fig. 5 represents a vertical transverse section drawn on line as x of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents the screw which acts as a locking device.

A is the upper portion of the heel, which is connected with and made part of the sole.

B is the detachable portion, secured to A by vertical screw 0, rigidly attached to plate D, and engaging, whenin position, with threaded opening G in plate F. These plates are secured to the upper and lower sections of the heel by means of screws, or in any other approved manner. e and. 9, Figs, 2 and 5, are the depressions in the plates D and F, forming, when brought together, a socket-into which the conical point-v ed screw C at its point d fits. It will be seen that the point of the screw where it enters the socket has no thread, the object being to provide a simple pin fitting closely into the socket to prevent lateral movement of the plates. The vertical screw E may be placed upon either the upper or lower section, the lower section being preferred as amatter of convenience.

1 do not confine myself to the conical formed socket and screw-point, as it is evident that by changing the form the same result may be obtained. Grooves in the leather, as shown by H, Fig. 3, should be formed in both sec tions of the heel, so as to provide a threaded opening for l'ockingscrew 0. The lateral movement of the heel, or tendency to unscrew, may be prevented by the screw alone, without the conical point and socket, or by a claspingplate countersunk on the transverse inner face of the heel; but the device'described and shownis preferable, as additional firmness is secured by the insertion of the locking screw or. pin into the socket formed between the metallic plates.

What I claim as new, and for which I ask Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a sectional heel, the combination of provided with groove'e, plate F, having screw- 1 way G and groove 5 therein, and locking pin or screw 0, substantially as set forth.
