Heretofore, several types of lubricating means have been proposed for lubricating the loop taker in the sewing machine. They are, however, not satisfactory because of the following drawbacks.
It is necessary to supply a quantity of oil for oiling a loop taker of a sewing machine over the amount actually needed for lubrication although the excess quantity is slight. That is, it is required to keep oiling the loop taker within a range of a slight excess quantity. The lubricating oil varies in viscosity depending on temperature and the speed of the machine also varies, resulting in excessive oil flow so as to frequently spoil the sewing thread.
The object of this invention is to provide a lubricating means adapted to distribute desired and controlled quantities of oil to the loop taker and other parts or components of the sewing machine.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lubricating means which obviates the defects aforenoted.
Briefly stated in accordance with one aspect of this invention, there is provided a lubricating means comprising a distributing chamber, an oiling pump chamber, and an oil leaking chamber. A loop taker is oiled from the distributing chamber through an oiling pipe. The distributing chamber is connected with the oiling pump chamber through a connecting pipe and with the oil leaking chamber through a by-pass. A rotatable shaft of the loop taker is oiled from the oil leaking chamber through at least a shaft oiling pipe. The oil leaking chamber has an oil leaking station provided between the by-pass and the shaft oiling pipe. An oil leaking passageway is provided from the oil leaking station in which a spring-loaded ball valve cooperates with a valve seat of an oil leaking port communicating with the oil leaking chamber so as to discharge an excessive quantity of oil into an oil pipe through a clearance between the ball valve and the valve seat against the action of the spring adapted to be adjusted by means of an associated screw.
The invention will be better understood and other objects and additional advantages of the invention will become apparent upon perusal of the following description taken in connection with the drawings in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the preferred embodiment of this invention will now be described; however, this description will be understood to be illustrative of the invention and not as limiting it to the particular construction shown and described. There are an oiling pump chamber 1 and an oil distributing chamber 3 connected therewith by means of a connecting pipe 2. A by-pass 6 extends from the distributing chamber 3 to an oil leaking chamber 7. The rotatable shaft 5 of a loop taker it) is lubricated in such a manner that a quantity of oil over a predetermined quantity thereof to he admitted into an oiling pipe 4- provided within the distributing chamber 3 for lubricating the loop taker 10 and its proximate parts flows through the by-pass 6. In the oil leaking chamber 7 is provided an oil passageway 9 through which oil supplied from the by-pass 6 is directed to a shaft oiling pipe 11 for lubricating the shaft 5. An oil leaking station 8 is provided at the proximity of an oil leaking or bypass outlet port 14 at the outer end of the oil passageway 9 at the proximity of the inlet of the shaft oiling pipe 11. The oil leaking station 8 comprises a valve element such as a ball valve 13, the outer end of the oil passageway 9 functioning as a valve seat 15, and a spring 16 which biases the ball valve 13 so as to choke an oil leaking passageway 20. The spring 16 is seated inside an axial sleeve of screw 18. The flow through the oil leaking chamber 7 is controlled by means of turning the screw 18 so as to adjust the force of the spring acting on the back of the ball valve 13 against the pressure of oil in the oil passageway 9. When the ball valve 13 is unseated against the action of the spring 16, oil within the passageway 9 leaks through a clearance between the ball valve 13 and the valve seat 15. To this end the outer face of the adjust screw 18 is graduated suitably so as to indicate the oil pressure on a scale 26. The leaking or bypassed oil is admitted into a leaking port 23 whence the same is directed to another station to be lubricated through an oil pipe or discharge conduit 24. The rotatable shaft 5 is lubricated at a lubricating station 29 where oil is supplied through a pipe or outlet conduit 25 from the oil passageway 9. The loop taker 10 is lubricated by oil supplied from a passageway 27 communicating with an annular oil groove 28 which in turn communicates with an end of the oiling pipe 4.
By virtue of the above construction in which the oil leaking station 8 and the oil leaking passageway 20 are provided in the oil passageway 9 connected with the bypass 6 communicating with the oiling pipe 4 through which the loop taker 10 is lubricated, the oil leaking port 14 of the oil leaking station 8 being adapted to be choked by the ball valve 13 so as to discharge oil having a pressure over a predetermined limit, it becomes possible to keep the pressure under which the loop taker 10 is oiled constant, to retain the quantity of oil to be supplied to the loop taker 10 within a predetermined range, and accordingly, to prevent the sewing thread and the like from any damage resulted from over-oiling. Furthermore, the only procedure required to adjust the quantity of oil to be supplied to the loop taker within a predetermined range is to merely turn the adjusting screw 18 which is essentially a foolproof procedure.
While a particular embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described, modifications thereof will readily occur to those skilled in the art. It should be understood therefore that the invention is not limited to the particular arrangement disclosed but that the appended claims are intended to cover all modifications which do not depart from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A lubrication system for a sewing machine, comprising a distributing chamber, an oil pump chamber, and an oil leaking chamber, said distributing chamber having an outlet conduit for lubricating a component unit of said sewing machine, conduit means for interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil pump chamber 3 and with said oil leaking chamber, respectively, said last mentioned chamber having an outlet conduit in fluid communication with said conduit means interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil leaking chamber for lubricating said machine, said oil leaking chamber having a bypass outlet port interposed between said last mentioned outlet conduit and conduit means, said outlet port having a discharge conduit adapted for fluid communication therewith, said outlet port having a spring loaded valve for controlling the oil flow through said port to said discharge conduit, and manual means for adjusting the release pressure of said valve to thereby control the oil pressure in said outlet conduit of said oil leaking chamber, said component unit being the loop taker of the sewing machine, the latter having a rotatable shaft oiled from said outlet conduit of said oil leaking chamber.
2. A lubrication system for a sewing machine, comprising a distributing chamber, an oil pump chamber, and an oil leaking chamber, said'distributing chamber having an outlet conduit for lubricating a component unit of said sewing machine, first conduit means for interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil pump chamber and second conduit means for interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil leaking chamber, said last mentioned chamber having an outlet conduit in fluid communication with said second conduit means for lubricating said machine, said oil leaking chamber having a bypass outlet port interposed between said last mentioned outlet conduit and second conduit means, said outlet port having a discharge conduit adaptedfor fluid communication therewith, said pump chamber providing a pressurized oil supply to said distributing and oil leaking chambers 'throughsaid first and second conduit means, respectively, said outlet port having a spring loaded valve for controlling the oil flow through said port to said discharge conduit, and manual means for adjusting the release pressure of said Valve to thereby control the oil 4 pressure in said outlet conduit of said oil leaking chamber.
3. A lubrication system for a sewing machine, comprising a distributing chamber, an oil pump chamber, and an oil leaking chamber, said distributing chamber having an outlet conduit for lubricating a component unit of said sewing machine, first conduit means for interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil pump chamber and second conduit means for interconnecting said distributing chamber with said oil leaking chamber, said last mentioned chamber having an outlet conduit in fluid communication with said second conduit means for lubricating said machine, said oil leaking chamber having a bypass outlet port interposed between said last mentioned outlet conduit and second conduit means, said outlet port having a discharge conduit adapted for fluid communication therewith, said pump chamber providing a pressurized oil supply to said distributing and oil leaking chambers through said first and second conduit means, respectively, said outlet port having a spring loaded valve for controlling the oil flow through said port to said discharge conduit, and manual means for adjusting the release pressure of said valve to thereby control the oil pressure in said outlet conduit of said oil leaking chamber, said spring loaded valve comprising a ball element, and said manual means comprising a rotatable member having a spring coacting with said ball element.
