VENTILATING SWEAT-LEATHER FOR HATS.

Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 30,648, dated November 13, 1860.

To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, JULiUs PoLLocK, of Morrisania, Westchester county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Sweat- Leathers for Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view represent ing my improved sweat leather as applied to a hat; and Fig. 2, a section thereof.

The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

Hats have been made with a hollow cushion inflated with air to avoid the pressure on the forehead, and combined with tubes or corrugaticns in the sweat leather at the sides of the head just over the temples, Letters Patent for such a combination having been granted to me bearing date the 3rd day of April, 1860; but in practice it has been found difficult to make such cushions air proof and when originally made air proof they soo-n leak and become disagreeable to the wearer. And it has also been found iii practice that the corrugations at the sides of the hat soon flatten out and then fail to admit of the required circulation.

The Object of my present invention is to avoid the defects above stated, and to this end my said invention consists in making sweat leathers for hats with embossed projections to bear on portions of the forehead, and filling in the cavities on the side next the hat with some light and elastic substance, such as loose felt, possessing sufficient elasticity to yield to the form of the forehead, and tension enough to prevent the said projections from being permanently pressed out of shape. And my said invention also consists in forming such sweat leathers with crimped or embossed corrugations at the sides stiflened on the inside with sliellac or equivalent gum or cement, so

' as to retain them in form that air may circulate through them.

In the accompanying drawings (a) represents a hat of suitable shape and (b) a sweat leather applied to the inside and there secured in the usual way. That part of the sweat leather which fits over the forehead is embossed fro-in the side next the hat to form hollow protuberences (o, o) at any desired distance apart on the side next the forehead, leaving spaces between for the passage of air. The cavities so formed are to be filled in with felted fabric (CZ) very slightly felted so that it shall be very elas tic and light, that it may readily yield to the head without materially increasing the weight of the hat.

At the sides of the sweat which, in use, come over the temples, the sweat is crimped or embossed into corrugations (e, e) extending entirely across the sweat. The inner surface of these corrugations is to be well coated with shellac or other equivalent cement varnish which will not be softened by moisture from the head. In this way the corrugat-ions will be retained in form while in use so as to leave free passages for the circulation of air.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Making single sweat leathers for hats with embossed protuberences at any desired distance apart, filled in on the side next the hat with some light and elastic substance, substantially as described, to form yielding cushions against the forehead,l as set forth.
