Description

Oct. 30, 1962 c D. JOBSON 3,061,303
3 BALL CAROM BILLIARD ADJUSTABLE POCKET PLUGS Filed March 20, 1961 WITNESS 3,061,308 3 BALL CARGM BELLIARD ADJUSTABLE PKET PLUGS C Drew Jobson, R0. Box 4, 131 Palmetto Ave, Howey In The Hills, Fla. Filed Mar. 20, 1961, Ser. No. 97,1435 1 Qlaim. (Cl. 273-414) My invention relates solely to pocket plugs, to convert 15 numbered balls and one cue ball pocket billiard tables to straight cushion, 3 balls billiard tables, by the use of 2 two piece adjustable side pocket plugs, and 4 two piece adjustable corner pocket plugs, each type as shown as FIGURES 1 and 2, respectively, on the drawing.
My invention consists of a two piece pocket plug, the two half plugs being connected together, by one reversible threaded screw, by which the two half plugs can be adjusted to completely close the pocket opening and at the same time permit the alignment of the leading cushion edges of the two half plugs, to parallel the leading edges of the table cushions. With all 6 pocket plugs fitted, a solid continuous table cushion is formed, permitting playing 3 ball carom, or straight billiards thereon.
The drawing shows in FIGURE 1, a side pocket plug, which requires straight leading edge cushions. FIGURE 2 shows an end pocket plug, which requires the leading edge cushions to be at right angles.
Both plugs, FIGURES 1 and 2, have V sides to fit the V sides of the pocket openings, and both consist of two half plugs, connected by a single reversible threaded screw, actuated by a hex nut or a knurled edge disk wheel.
FIGURE 1 in the drawing ShOWs a side pocket two piece adjustable plug. The figure numbers 1, 2, 3 right, and 4, 5, 6 left are separate solid plug assemblies. Numbers 1 and 4 are constructed of hardwood; numbers 2 and 5 are of billiard cushion rubber, cemented to the leading edge of 1 and 4. Numbers 3 and 6 consist of aluminum die castings, with right and left female threads, in 3 and 6, respectively, and said castings are attached by countersunk wood screws to the wood plugs 11 and 4. Both numbers 1 and 2, and 4 and 5 are covered with green billiard felt cloth. The two half plugs are connected together by a right and left male threaded reversible stainless steel screw, with either a hex nut number 7, to actuate the screw, by the use of a wrench, or a hand operated knurled disk wheel as shown as number 14 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 2, shows an end pocket plug with the numbers 8, 9 and 10, and 11, 12 and 13 being constructed of the same materials as numbers 1, 2 and 3, and 4, 5 and 6 in FIGURE 1. Number 14 shows a rotatable knurled disk wheel in place of the hex nut number 7, in FIG- URE 1.
My invention is a new idea in billiard pocket plugs which is unique, in that they are in no way similar, as to design, or fitting adjustments to previous patented plugs, which require many single screws for the various fitting adjustments or require modifications to the pocket billiard table with each plug requiring marking for each individual pocket, after fitting.
fil rates Patent red My invention consists of side and end pocket plugs, there being 2 side and 4 end plugs constituting a set for a pocket billiard table to convert the table to a 3 ball carom billiard table Each plug consists of two half solid plugs connected together by a reversible screw, thus forming an assembled plug. Actuated by a hex nut, with a small wrench, or by a rotatable knurled disk, by hand, the two half plugs can be retracted, in order to insert them in a pocket opening. By aligning the leading edges of a two half plug assembly with the leading edges of the tables cushions by hand, then reversing the screw, to expand the plug assembly until the V side of each half plug is tightly firmed with the V sides of the pocket openings, the plug forms an integral part of the table cushions. With all 6 plugs inserted the table is formed with continuous cushions, all around .the table with no pocket openings, thereby permitting the playing of 3 ball carom straight or cushion billiards.
The fitting of these two-half adjustable plug assemblies is accomplished quickly by one screw adjustment and the plugs will fit any pocket. The plugs do not require any modification to the pocket billiard table to be properly fitted, and do not require marking individual plugs for any particular pocket.
The fitting operations of the two half plug assemblies, as described above may also be accomplished by substitution of a linkage mechanism, instead of a reversible screw, or by a spring loaded eccentric cam mechanism, or any other method, to accomplish the end result.
I claim as my invention for 3 ball carom side and end billiard pocket plugs, the following:
A two piece adjustable pocket plug assembly comprising; two half plug sections, each half section comprising a base member having a rubber cushion fixedly mounted on its front surface, felt covering the rubber cushion and the top and bottom of the base section, the sides of said base member being tapered inwardly from front to rear, means for receiving screw threads being located on one side of the base member; an adjusting screw having left and right hand male screw threads at opposite ends thereof, an actuating means disposed intermediate the ends of said screw for causing rotation of the screw; said two half plug sections being connected together by the adjusting screw to form a complete unit whereby the movement of said actuating means of the adjusting screw will cause the male screw threads of the adjusting screw to rotate in said screw thread receiving means of the base members to move said base members outwardly when inserted in a pool table pocket for the purpose of forming a closure for the table pocket with the felt covered rubber cushions of the plug forming a continuation of the pool table cushions.
