SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,011, dated September 30, 1884-.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS M. FREE- MAN, of Ocean Grove, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Portable Canopies, of

which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish a portable shelter from the heat of the sun or from a shower. It is especially intended for the sea-shore and for watering places, where persons lie upon the grass or upon the sand and need some protection for the head and neck especially, and where a protection is required for the eyes to prevent injuring by excessive light, and where an agreeable shade and privacy can be enjoyed, while the health and vigor of the body are being promoted, and so that a person can be in a recumbent posit-ion while reading or conversing. I make use of hinged folding side frames with penetrating angle-iron points, and curtains that are attached to the frames and form a canopy that can be closed in more or less. The folding frames can be easily carried from place to place, and either spread or furled, as desired, and with rapidity. r

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the frames with the outlines of the curtains or canopy in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side view in larger size of one of the frames. I make use of two side frames. Each frame is composed of the legs or posts a b, that are connected together by the diagonal brace c, that ,is united at the ends by the hinges d and e to the respective legs, and there is a diagonal tie-bar, f, that is pivoted at g to the leg at and booked at the other end over the stud h upon the brace 0. Each leg or post is provided with an angle-iron point, Z,'for1ned, preferably, of sheet metal-such as galvanized iron-and bent into a trough shape and sharpened at the lower end to a point. The upper end is perforated for the reception of the screws or nails by which the metal is attached to the lower end of the wooden legs or posts a b. At 0 there is a projection upon which the foot can be placed to press the point down into the sand or earth. It will now be evident that each side frame can be easily spread and the points driven into the earth, or the same can be drawn up and removed. When the angle-iron points are set into the earth, they firmly hold the posts upright, and the braces c andtie-bars f hold the posts of the side frames at the proper distances apart. The canopy or covering is made of canvas or other suitable material,and it is fastened to the top of the posts a b, and there are side curtains. It I is preferable to make the curtains at the back sufficiently deep to reach the ground, or nearly so, as seen at r, and the curtains at the sides 8 are sloped upwardly at the edge and ornamented, and the front t is also ornamented, and I usually provide a separate fly, 1), that may be buttoned or hooked to the sides 8 and front t 65 whenever a more complete shelter is required. A canopy of this kind is adapted to lawns or to the sea-beach, and it can be used for children orby grown persons, and it may be made of any desired size, so as to cover or only partially cover the person.

I claim as my invention- 1. The posts a I), having angle-iron points, in combination with the brace c, hinged at its ends to the posts a b, and the diagonal tie-bar 7 pivoted to the post a and hooked to the brace c,- and the cover or canopy, substantially as set forth.

2. The points Z, formed of sheet metal bent into a trough shape and each pointed at one 80 end and provided with holes at the other end and having a projection for the foot to be placed upon, in combination with the canopy and canopy-frame having wooden posts to which the sheet-metal points are attached, substantially as set forth.

3. The posts a b, points Z, braces c, tie-bars f, and connecting hinges and pivots, in combination with the. canopy having a deep back curtain and sloping side curtains, substano tially as set forth.
