Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. SHAW?, OE BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
PIE-CRIMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,592, dated November 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SHAW, of the city of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pie-Crimpers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being also made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a perspective View of my improved crimper. Fig. 2 is a View representing my crimper as applied in crimping and trimming a pie.
It is well known that in making pies the upper and lower crusts have to be pressed together firmly at the edges to make them adhere to each other, and before baking those parts ot the crusts projecting beyond the plate are trimmed oli' with a knife; and that it is also usual in pressing the two edges together to use some implement which shall also serve to ornament the edge.
The nature of my invention consists in the use, when combined in the same implement, of a cutting instrument for trimming the pie, and a wheel for crimping and ornamenting the edge.
In Fig. l, c is awire bent and twisted in such a manner as to form a handle to the crimper. To one end of this wire is attached a small cog wheel, a, so as to be easily rotated on its axis. The other end of this wire is flattened, forming the blade or trimmer, Z). The method of using the crimper will be readily understood by Fig. 2, in which e represents a pie with its edge, d, (l, CZ, trimmed and crimped, and its edge, e, c, e, untrimmed. In using the crimper the blade b is pressed laterally against the edge of the plate, j, Fig. 2, while being drawn around it, and at the same time suflicient vertical pressure is given by means of the handle, c, to cause the wheel, a, to rotate and crimp the edges properly. Then the crimper is moved around the pie in the manner described the blade, Z9, operating in combination with and against the edge of the plate, f, will trim or cut oii the superfluous crust, and the wheel, a, at the same time presses the edges of the crusts together and ornaments them.
I am aware that a, wheel with cogs is an old device; and that a crimper with a guide or tailpiece has been used which I do not claim, but
What I claim as new and of my invention, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is The knife and wheel when combined to crimp and trim a pie at one operation, con structed substantially in the manner set forth and specified.
CHARLES A. SHAW.
