(Cl. 239-142) This invention relates to spraying devices and more particularly to a portable turbojet spraying device actuated by high pressure water for applying insecticides, nutritional and other spray materials to growing plants.
An object of the invention is to provide novel agitating means for maintaining solid materials in suspension in a fluid and jet Spraying it from a portable container by water pressure.
Ano-ther object is to provide a jet deector movable into operative position on the spraying device to render the agitating means inoperative when spraying liquids which do not carry solids in suspension.
Still another object is to provide a metering device on the sprayer for controlling the concentration of the material being sprayed.
Other objects and advantages will appear more fully from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIGURE 4 is a cross sectional view of a turbine wheel for driving the agitatng means in the spraying device; and
FIGURE 5 is a front elevation of the portion of the turbine wheel shown in FIGURE 4.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a container of glass, plastic or any other suitable material for holding a concentrated spray solution or mixture of any desired composition. This container has an upper neck portion which is threaded into a frame or cover 2 having an integral extended arm 3. A sloping pistol type handle 4 is secured -to the outer end of the arm 3 by any suitable means and provides a ready means for holding and manipulating the sprayer when in use.
An upstanding lug 5 (FIG. 3) integral with the cover 2, supports a turbine wheel 6 rotatably mounted on a screw lila threaded into the lug 5. Turbine wheel 6 has a bevel gear integrally attached to it, said turbine Wheel being rotatively driven by a high pressure jet of liquid issuing from a nozzle assembly 7 (FIG. l) and impinging against the sloping surfaces of the blades of turbine wheel 6 and the grooved periphery of said wheel. The rotating wheel 6 drives a rotatable agitator 8 through a shaft 9 and bevelled gears 10 and 11. Agitator 8 is integrally mounted on the lower end of shaft 9. The turbine wheel 6 is enclosed except for the upper exposed portion shown in FIG. l by a two part circular housing as shown, the lower half lof said housing being integral with cover 2 and the upper half integral with flanged part 12. Also integral with flanged part 12 is a jet housing assembly 7 (FIG. 1) containing an aspira-ting nozzle from which a high pressure jet of spray material impinges on and drives turbine wheel 6. Strengthening webs 13 and 14 are integral with jet housing 7, flanged part 12 and the upper half of the tur-bine wheel housing. The housing is water tight with respect .to the periphery of the wheel 6, the rim and blades of which move close to but do not touch the inner surface of the housing.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 the rim and blades of the turbine wheel 6 are of special contour whereby the rim of the wheel is recessed or grooved and the blades extend to the bottom of the rim groove and are set at angles so that the blades slope in the direction of rotation of the wheel as shown in FIG. l. This grooved periphery of the turbine Wheel 6 and the shape of its blades eciently and effectively spreads and disperses the stream of spray material impinging on the wheel 6 upwardly and laterally during the operation of the sprayer.
Part 12 with its integrally attached half of the turbine wheel housing and nozzle assembly 7 is secured to cover 2 and arm 3 by screws as shown. A suitable Water tight gasket (not shown) is located between the adjacent surfaces of part 12 and parts 2 and 3. Nozzle assembly 7 is provided -at its left hand end with a centrally located aspirator tube 22 which extends through a cylindrical plug 23 threaded inside .the assembly '7. A suction tu-be 25 extends from space 24 within the nozzle assembly 7 down into the concentrated spray fluid inside `the container and is provided with a screen 26 to prevent clogging of the tube 25 or the aspirator tube 22 by solid particles which may be too large to pass through tubes 25 and 22.
The mixing of Water with the concentrated spray material from container t1 is controlled by a needle Valve 29 which is adjusted to control the degree of opening between space `124 and aspirator tube 22 by turning a calibrated index head 30. A resilient washer 31, through which the needle valve spindle 29 passes, provides an air tight seal to maintain a vacu-um in the space 24.
A tube 17 extending through the handle 4 is connected to a garden hose (not shown) by means of a threaded ferrule 19 so lthat high pressure water may ow through tube 17, through channels 2tl-21 into the jet nozzle when a trigger 15 is `operated to open poppet valve 16 against the pressure of a spring which normally keeps it closed. A nut 18 is threaded onto the lower end of the tube i7 projecting beyond thehandle 4 to firmly hold it against the sloping under surface of rarm 3. A lug 27 integral with handle 4 is positioned in the open end of channel 20 to prevent handle 4 from turning on threaded tube 17. A plug 28 is threaded into .the outer end of channel 20 to prevent the escape of water at that position.
When spraying with solutions that do not have solids that have to be kept in suspension I provide a fan shaped jet deeotor comprising a triangular at bottom plate 32 having vertical upstanding side flanges 35 to deflect the jet of spray material above turbine wheel 6 so as not to rotate it. This jet detlector 32, 35 pivoted on a pair of studs 33 projecting from opposite sides of the jet nozzle 7 is swung into position along arc 34 into the position shown in FIG. "l. When it is desired to operate the sprayer with agitation of the spray material in container 1 the deflector 32, 35 is swung backward along arc 34 until it rests horizontally on the upper surface of jet nozzle body 7 so that the jet impiuges on the turbine wheel 6 and actuates agitator 8 as previously described.
In operation with spray mixtures containing solids the jet deflector is swung to the inoperative positions as above described, the sprayer is held in the operators hand by the pistol grip handle 4 and trigger l5 is then actuated to open poppet valve 16 whereupon high pressure water passes through tube 17, channels 20 and 2l into the jet nozzle. The water issuing from the nozzle induces a vacuum in space 24 to withdraw concentrated spray material from container 1 through tube 25 and into the water jet through aspirator tube 22. The water jet thus dilutes the concentrated spray material as it is sprayed. Any solids in the concentrated spray solution are maintained in suspension by the agitator 8 which is actuated by the jet of spray material impinging on the blades of turbine wheel 6 to rotate it and operate gears 10 and 11 to drive shaft 9. The concentration of the solution being sprayed is controlled by turning index head 30 as previously described.
It is evident that many changes and modifications of the design shown may be made without departing from the principles of the invention. Thus jet deflector 32, 35 may be entirely omitted from the sprayer if desired and the sprayer used with the agitating mechanism operative at all times during use. Also needle valve 29 might be omitted and the sprayer built with a fixed ratio of spray material from container 1 to the quantity of water issuing from the jet nozzle such ratio being a function of the relative diameters of the main nozzle orifice and of the aspirator tube 22. Other variations and modiications of the design shown may be made without departing from the essential elements of my invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a spraying device, a container for holding material to be sprayed, a removable cover for the container, a turbine wheel mounted on said cover, an agitator mounted within the container for simultaneously stirring all of the material in the container, means connected to the turbine wheel for actuating the agitator, a nozzle mounted on the cover for directing liquid spray material under pressure against the turbine wheel to drive it and actuate the agitator, and means for creating a vacuum to withdraw the spray material from the container.
2. In a spraying device, a container for holding liquid spray material, a cover secured to said container, a jet orifice to which high pressure water my be supplied, said jet orifice having aspirator means for withdrawing spray material into it from the container, an agitator for stirring the contents of the container, and a turbine wheel actuated by the jet of fluid emerging from the jet orifice, said turbine wheel actuating the agitator in the container.
3. In a spraying device, a container for the material to be sprayed, an agitating means mounted within the container, a turbine wheel for operating the agitating means, means for directing high pressure water mixed with spray material against the turbine wheel to operate it and the agitating means, aspirating means for withdrawing material to be sprayed from the container and mixing it with the water striking the turbine wheel, and means for deflecting the mixture of water and spray material from the turbine wheel to render the agitating means inoperative while continuing the spraying.
4. In a spraying device, a container for the material to be sprayed, an agitating means mounted within the container, a turbine wheel for operating the agitating means, means for directing high pressure water against the turbine wheel to operate it and the agitating means, means for controlling the tiow of water, an aspirating tube for withdrawing material to be sprayed from the container and mixing it with the water striking the turbine wheel, means movable into position to deilect the mixture of water and material away from the turbine wheel while spraying continues, and adjustable means associated with the aspirating tube for controlling the ratio of the mixture of spray material and Water being sprayed.
5. In a spraying device, a container for holding material to be sprayed, a cover secured to the top of the container and having an integral extending arm, a handle having a connection to a source of high pressure water, means for securing the handle to the outer end of the ex tending arm, means for preventing rotation of the handle, a housing secured to the cover and its extending arm, and an aspirating nozzle mounted in the housing for withdrawing the spray material from the container and mixing it with the water as this mixture is sprayed in a jet from the end of the nozzle, and a movable jet disi persing means mounted on the nozzle, said means having operative and inoperative positions.
6. In a spraying device, a container for holding material to be sprayed, a cover secured to the top of the container and having an integral extending arm, a nozzle mounted on the arm, `a handle having a connection from the nozzle to a source of high pressure lluid, means for securing the handle to the outer end of the extend ing arm, means for preventing rotation of the handle, a housing secured to the cover and its extending arm, an aspirating nozzle mounted in the housing for withdrawing the spray material from the container and mixing it with the water as this mixture is sprayed from the end of the nozzle, and means mounted on the extended arm for controlling the entry of high pressure water into the nozzle.
7. In a spraying device, a container for holding material to be sprayed, a removable cover secured to the top of the container and having an integral extended arm provided with a sloping undersurface at its outer end, a turbine wheel mounted on the cover, a bevel gear secured to the turbine wheel, a shaft extending into the container and having a bevel gear meshing with the bevel gear on the wheel, an agitator mounted on one end of the shaft within the container, a housing attached to the combined cover and extended arm for partially enclosing the turbine wheel, a pistol grip handle, means for securing the handle to the undersloping surface of the extending arm on the cover, means on the handle for cooperation with the extending arm for preventing rotation of the handle, a tube extending through the handle for connection to a source of uid under pressure, a nozzle mounted on the housing, said extended arm and housing having channels therein for interconnection to carry the high pressure fluid to the nozzle, a valve interposed between the said channels to control the tlow of high pressure uid, manual means for operating the valve to permit water to ow through the nozzle to impinge on the turbine wheel toactuate it to operate the agitator, an aspirator tube extending from inside the container to within the nozzle, said nozzle having a space wherein a vacuum is formed when the high pressure fluid iiows to thus Withdraw the material to be sprayed from the container into the nozzle, an index means mounted on the nozzle for controlling the amount of spray material withdrawn from the container, and manually movable means for optionally deecting the combined high pressure fluid and spray material from the turbine wheel to stop operation thereof when desired while spraying continues.
8. In a spraying device, a container for holding materials to be sprayed, a cover for the container, a turbine wheel mounted in the cover and partly projecting above the cover, agitating means connected to the turbine wheel and mounted in the container for stirring all of the material in the container, a nozzle mounted on the cover for directing liquid under pressure against the said projecting portion of the turbine wheel to drive it and actuate the agitating means, means for creating a vacuum to withdraw the stirred material from the container and mix it with the liquid, and means connected to the nozzle for controlling the ow of said liquid under pressure and the flow of the stirred material being sprayed.
