Description

Oct. 9, 1962 P. H. IRMISCHER LIGHTING FIXTURES Filed March 16, 1961 mmvrm PA VA- H. IR/VI/SCHER av rates Unite My invention relates to new and useful improvements in lighting fixtures and more particularly the invention relates to what is known as a tree or pole lamp wherein there is provided an elongated standard secured in a vertical plane between the floor and ceiling of a building or room by adjustable supporting legs, the standard supporting a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart light units.
In the present pole or tree lamp the location of the light units with respect to the standard is limited. It is therefore one of the objects of my invention to provide a lamp pole or tree wherein the lamp units may be arranged in a number of positions with respect to the pole and with respect to each other thereby resulting in what might properly be termed a universal lamp unit.
Another and equally important object of my invention is the novel and simple construction for attaching the light unit support to the standard to accomplish universal adjustment of the light unit in a horizontal plane about the standard.
Yet another and equally important object of the invention is the simple and novel arrangement of mounting a light diffuser upon the shell or shade of the light unit.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional detailed View taken substantially on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detailed view taken substantially on line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional detailed view taken substantially on line 4-4- of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional detailed view similar to FIG. 4 but showing a modified form of construction.
The several objects of my invention are preferably accomplished by the preferred form of construction shown in the accompanying drawing. In this connection a standard or pole is indicated at 10. This standard is in the form of a hollow elongated tube. At one end or both ends of the standard there may be associated therewith the standard adjustable legs 11 whereby the stand ard may be firmly supported between the floor and ceiling of a room or between a room divider and a ceiling.
On the standard 10 at spaced intervals there is secured a bracket 12. This bracket 12 is secured to the standard by means of screws 13 and has its intermediate longitudinal portion formed to provide a socket 14. A swivel supporting arm 15 is provided which is formed of an elongated member twisted or curled to provide a deformed C or the like. One end portion 16 of the arm 15 is inserted in the socket 14 for swivel movement relative to the bracket 12. In such end portion there is formed a circumferential groove 17. The socket has a punched portion which provides an inwardly extending protuberance 18 which engages in the groove 17 to provide a connection between the swivel supporting arm 15 and the bracket 12.
A light unit is indicated generally at 19 and includes a shade or globe 20 secured to a handle 21 which may carry a socket (not shown) and the electric bulb (not shown).
atenr The open end 22 of the shade 20 has an inturned lip 23. A bezel 24- is formed of plastic or other equivalent material and is provided with a turned peripheral edge 25 which snaps over the lip 23 so as to provide a connection between the bezel 2 4 and the shade 20. This bezel is of translucent material and as such serves as a light diffuser.
The shade is adjustably connected to the outer end 26 of the arm 15 by a suitable fixture 27 which in the present form includes a ball 28 connected to a nipple 29 by a collar 30. The arrangement permits the ball 28 to have universal movement with the arm 15. The arm 15 being hollow as is the standard 10 the circuit wires 3-1 for the light fixture extend therethrough. As a part of this circuit connection there is included a finger switch 32. In FIG. 5 a modified form of construction over that shown in FIG. 4 is illustrated. In this connection the peripheral edge 25 of the shade 20 forms an annular groove 33 which receives a circular bead 34 formed on the bezel 24.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a relatively simple form of construction for mounting the lamp unit supporting arms to a standard of a lamp pole or tree whereby the lamp units may be adjusted circumferentially with respect to the pole and with respect to each other without interfering with the adjustment of the lamp unit with respect to its associated supporting arm.
Such construction permits the lamp units to have a relatively large range of adjustment with respect to each other and with respect to the standard. It will be also apparent that I have provided a simple construction for removably attaching a light diffuser bezel to the shade of the lamp unit.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to protect by Letters Patent is:
A tree-type lighting fixture comprising (a) a standard,
(1)) a plurality of supporting brackets secured to the standard in spaced relation with respect to each other in the direction of the long axis of the standard and each providing a socket,
(c) an arm for each of said brackets, said arm being curved to encircle the standard and having one end portion bent from the plane of the curved portion of the arm and seated in its respective socket, said arm being movable for adjustment circumferentially with respect to said standard,
(0.) a lighting unit for each arm,
(e) and means connecting the lighting unit to its respective arm for adjustment relative thereto.
