Description

Oct. 9, 1962 H. F. FLINT TOBACCO SMOKING DEVICE Filed July 13, 1961 INVENTOR.
BY I
United States Patent 3,057,362 TOBACCO SMUKING DEVHIE Henry F. Flint, 25851 W. 8 Mile Road, Southficld, Mich. Filed July 13, 1961, Ser. No. 123,851 2 Claims. (6!. 131-173) This invention relates to a tobacco smoking device which, for instance, may be either in the nature of a tobacco pipe, a cigar holder or a cigarette holder.
While it has long been known to provide a pipe with which a water reservoir is provided through the water of which smoke is by-passed to the user in a manner calculated to remove undesirable by-products from the smoke, while at the same time cooling and moisturizing the smoke, the present invention, while employing in general such a system, is directed to a simple, compact and portable arrangement adapted for carrying in the pocket of a smoker without adding undue weight or awkwardness such as would detract from the handling of the smoking device in the general manner associated with smoking pipes or cigaror cigarette-holders.
The present invention further provides, in combination with such a device, means for preventing leakage of water from the reservoir to the outer passages of the device when it may be inverted or otherwise moved to a position where such leakage would otherwise occur, such as when the device is being carried in the pocket of the user.
A still further object of the said invention is to provide, in such an arrangement, a porous filter preferably made of a more or less water-repellent material renewably interposed in the inlet passage to the reservoir as a means of increasing the efficiency of the filtering operation of the device.
Still further objects or advantages additional or subsidiary to the aforesaid objects, or resulting from the construction or operation of the invention as it may be carried into eifect, will become apparent as the said invention is hereinafter further disclosed.
In carrying the said invention into effect, I may utilize the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, by way of example, having reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical sectional view of co-operative elements of a pipe, cigar or cigarette holder embodying the said invention;
FIGURE 2 is a cross section of the same taken on a plane indicated by the line 22 in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view of the reservoir taken on a plane indicated on the line 3-3 in FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is a perspective detail view of the slide valve.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts of the several figures of the drawing.
The stem of a smoking pipe (or other tobacco holders such as a cigaror cigarette-holder) and a mouthpiece 11 shown as being connected, as by spigots 10 and 11', to an intermediate member or body portion 12 having corresponding sockets 10" and 11", for convenience of manufacture, although it will be obvious that either one or other, or all of these members 10, 11 and 12, may be integral with one another, if considered desirable.
Extending below the member 12 is an extension 13 providing on the underside a recessed facing to receive the upper end of a reservoir 14, 15 being an interposed leakproof gasket and 16 an elongated bolt extending upwardly through the base of the said reservoir 14. The member 12 has a threaded downwardly extended cavity therein communicating with the socket 10" of the said member 12 whereby the upper end of the bolt 16, when in its reservoir-securing position, extends into impingement with the spigot 10 so that the said bolt acts as a setscrew performing the function of both locking the member 10 to the member 12 as well as securing the reservoir 14 in place on the extension 13 of the said member 12. As shown in the drawing, the spigot 10' may be grooved or recessed, as at 41, for more elfective engagement of the end of the bolt 16 therewith. 17 is a leak proof gasket interposed between the head of this bolt and the base on the reservoir.
The extension 13 is shown as having an inlet port 36 to the reservoir and an outlet port 37, 18 being the bore of the stem 10 leadingto the port 36 and being arcuately formed for ease in cleaning, while 19 is a similar bore in the member 12 connecting with the outlet port 37 and with the bore of the mouthpiece 11.
It is proposed to insert a filter in the smoke passage in advance of the reservoir, and in this example the extension 13 is provided with a downwardly extending tube 20 the lower part of which is in the form of a removable cap 21 and forms a holder for a replaceable filter cartridge 22, the filtering medium of which is preferably of a waterrepellent nature.
The cap 21 of the tube 20 terminates adjacent the base of the reservoir, and is provided in its lower terminal portion with a recessed valve seat 23 adapted to receive a check valve which, in this example, is in the form of a relatively heavy ball 24 normally resting in a depression or cavity 24 in the base of the reservoir and confronting the recessed lower end of the said cap 21. Thus, upon inversion of the device, said ball will move into said recess and into sealing position against the valve seat 23 to deter any undesirable flow of water from the reservoir back into the bore of the stem 10 of the tobacco holder. Similarly, and for the same purpose, the outlet port 37 is provided with a recessed valve seat 37 for a check valve or ball 25 which is normally supported on an internal projection or shelf 26 at the upper end of the reservoir 14 and below said valve seat 37.
As a positive means of shutting off communication between the reservoir and the bores 18 and 19 of the device to prevent the access of water thereto, when the device may be laid on one side or inverted, a slide valve 27 is provided having orifices 28 and 29 therein normally establishing communication between the ports 36 and 37 and the bores 18 and 19, a slot 30 permitting movement of the valve 27 in one or other direction to an extent limited by the bolt 16 whereby to shift the said orifices 28 and 29 into and out of their normal synchronized position as will be obvious. Thus, the set bolt 16, in addition to being the means of securing both the reservoir 14 and the tobacco holder 10 to the member 12, also serves as the stop for limiting the reciprocal motion of the slide valve 27 between its open and closed positions. 31 indicates any suitable gasket means which may be employed to prevent leakage about said slide valve.
It will be observed that while the members 10, 11 and 12, although coupled together for convenience, operate in combination as a single structure, and are therefore referred to in the claims as a smoke passage unit which is characterized by the inlet passage or bore 18 and the outlet passage or bore 19, each opening in spaced relation through the lower side of the unit.
What I claim is:
l. A tobacco smoking device of the type described, comprising, a tobacco holder provided with a spigot, a mouthpiece, an intermediate body portion having inlet and outlet bores opening downwardly from said holder and said mouthpiece, respectively, in spaced relation to one another, a detachable water reservoir positioned beneath said body portion, said body portion having a threaded orifice extending upwardly therethrough to said spigot, a tubular member extending downwardly into said reservoir from the inlet bore of said body portion, check-valve means for closing the said bores against escape of water therethrough when said device is tilted or inverted, and an elongated combination bolt and set-screw passing upwardly through said reservoir and said threaded orifice whereby to secure said reservoir in position on said body portion and also to secure the spigot of said tobacco holder in said body portion of the device.
2. A tobacco smoking device of the type described, comprising, a tobacco holder provided with a spigot, a mouthpiece, an intermediate body portion having inlet and outlet bores opening downwardly from said holder and said mouthpiece, respectively, in spaced relation to one another, a detachable water reservoir positioned beneath said body portion, said body portion having a threaded orifice extending upwardly therethrough to said spigot, a tubular member extending downwardly into said reservoir from the inlet bore of said body portion, checkvalve means for closing the said bores against escape of water therethrough when said device is tilted or inverted, a manually operable slide-valve for positively closing the bores of said device, said slide-valve having a slot therein, an elongated combination bolt and set-screw passing through said reservoir, said slot and said threaded orifice whereby to secure said reservoir in position on said body portion, to cooperate with said slot to limit the motion of said slide valve and to secure the spigot of said tobacco holder in said body portion of the device.
