Description

Sept. 25, 1962 L. H. MORIN OFFSET HEEL FOR SEPARABLE FASTENER STRINGER SCOOPS Filed D60. 8, 1960 /a /9 Q v 20 5, 2/ W 20,, Z// k INVENTOR. Lou/5 H Mom/v HTTORMSY United dtates 3,055,070 OFFSET EEEL FQR SEPARABLE FASTENER STRINGER SCOOPS Louis H. Morin, Bronx, N.Y. (125 Beechwood Ave, New Rochelle, N.Y.) Filed Dec. 8, 1964), Ser. No. 74,499 2 Claims. (Cl. 24205.13)
This invention relates to separable fastener stringers employing scoops for coupling and uncoupling the stringers. More particularly, the invention deals with devices of the character described, wherein the scoops have at mounting end portions thereof angularly offset heel portions. Still more particularly, the invention deals with a scoop structure of the character described, wherein the scoops, plus the offset heel portions thereof, establish on each stringer a grip or anchorage extending the full length of the stringer, thereby providing a strong and durable stringer construction.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken to gether with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is an enlarged diagrammatic plan view of a pair of stringers coupled together with my improved scoop structure.
FIG. 2 is a section on the line 22 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is, a perspective View of one of the scoops detached.
Considering FIG. 1 of the drawing, 11 shows part of two stringers of a separable fastener having beaded edges, as at :11, 1 1, to which are attached scoops 12, 12' at longitudinally spaced intervals, as known in this art, one of the scoops 12 being shown in perspective in FIG. 3 of the drawing and the brief description of one scoop will apply to all. The scoops 12, 12' have coupling end portions 13, '13. These end portions comprise coupling heads 14, 14 forming the male portion of the coupling ends, the heads having apertures or recesses, as at 15, note FIG. 3, for receiving projecting pin portions 16 in the female or recessed portion 17, 17 of the ends 13, 13. The engagement of 16 with prevents lateral separation of coupled scoops, as commonly known in this art.
At 18, 18 are shown the mounting end portions of the scoops arranged upon the beads 11, 1'1 and part of the stringer tapes 10, 10 and these mounting end portions include offset heel portions 19, 19 extending angularly onto the tape 10, 10', as diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. 1 of the drawing. The angular extension of the heel portions 19, 19' is such that the rounded ends 20, 29 thereof are in alinement with the edges 21, 21' of adjacent scoops. The heel portions 19, 19' are considerably thinner than the scoops 12, 12', as will clearly appear from a consideration of FIGS. 2 and 3 of the drawing, and, in the use of separable fasteners,
Patented Sept. 25, 1962 ice these heel portions form wear resistant members, over which the flanged sides of conventional sliders operate in the operation of coupling and uncoupling the stringers and, thus, prevent wear upon the stringer tapes. The scoops 12, 12 are die cast directly upon the stringer tapes and, in the pressure injection of the material into the die cavities, it will be understood that this material extends into the interstices of the braid of the tape in establishing a very secure anchorage of the scoops on the tape, as well as the beaded edge 11, 11. It will, thus, be apparent that no attempt has been made to illustrate the roughened surfaces of the casting in FIG. 3 of the drawing.
It will be understood that the flanged sides of the slider, in operating upon the heel portions 19, 19', engage the rounded ends 22, 22 of the end portions 18, 18' in drawing the scoops 12, 12. toward each other in the coupling engagement.
For purposes of description, it may be said that the offsetting of the heel portions to one side of the scoop is equal or substantially equal to spacing between opposed surfaces of the mounting end portions of the scoops, the result of which would be that the mounting end portions or the scoops arranged upon the beaded edge of a stringer tape can be said to collectively extend the full length of the tape, so that stresses or strains tending to separate the stringers are taken up throughout the entire length of each stringer through the scoops attached to the stringers.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A separable fastener employing a pair of stringers having scoops spaced longitudinally of adjacent edge portions thereof, the scoops of each stringer having coupling end portions and heel end portions, the heel end portions having reduced wear resistant heels extending onto the tapes of the stringers, and said heels being 0&- set at an oblique angle in the direction of one side of each scoop a distance substantially equal to spacing between adjacent scoops on each stringer.
2. A stringer for separable fasteners comprising a stringer tape, scoops spaced longitudinally of one edge portion of the tape, each scoop having a coupling end portion and a mounting end portion, and the mounting end portion of each scoop including a reduced wear resistant heel offset at an oblique angle to one side surface of the mounting end portion a distance substantially equal to spacing between adjacent surfaces of mounting end portions of the scoops.
