Description

J. & T. ROSS.
FOUNTAIN PEN.
(No Model.)
Patented Sept. 23. 1884.
. Inventors J Ross A ztorne gs UNITED STATES PATENT Frrcri.
JAMES ROSS, OF HAMPDEN, AND THOMAS ROSS, OFBALTIMORE,MD.
FOUNTAIN-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,478, dated September 23, 1884.
' Application filed February 23, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom itv may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs Ross and THOMAS Ross, residing, respectively, at Hampden, Baltimore county, and at Baltimore city, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reservoir-Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which-- Figure l is an exterior View, and Fig. 2 a sectional view, of apen embodying our invention. Fig. 3 is a view of the interior plug. Fig. 4 is a view of the same with apen thereon. Fig. 5 is a view of the cap for protecting the pen when not in use, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 00 w of Fig. 2.
Our invention is designed to furnish an improved reservoir or fountain pen in which the ink in the reservoir will be continually and freely fed to the pen until entirely exhausted; and to this end it consists in the combination, arrangement, and construction of parts, which will first be fully described hereinafter, and
then pointed out specifically in the claim.
Referring to the drawings by letter, a is the tube which forms the handle of the pen, which tube is open at the forward end and otherwise entirely closed. I11 the open end is inserted a plug, 2;, the shape of which will be hereinafter described.
0 is an ordinary pen, inserted between the plug 1) and tube a. The upper part, 61, of the tube a is the reservoir for the ink, and it is filled through the open forward end by removing the plug and pen. The inner portion,
1), of the plug 1) is of the same diameter exteriorly as the tube a is interiorly, and entirely fills the tube when inserted therein. At the forward end of this portion 1) of the plug is a groove, 6 extending around the plug, and that portion of the plug forward of this groove is cut away or turned, so that a cylindricalshaped space will be left to receive the pen. WVhenthe pen is inserted therein, there will also be a space on each side of the pen, as at 6, Fig. 4. The plug is provided with a central bore, f, reaching from the rear end nearly to the forward end, and has radiating from it smaller bores g g, the former communicating with the space between the upper side of the plug and the tube, and the latter leading to the lower side of the tube or two openings, 5 both leading to the upper space.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is The combination, with the tube a, closed at its upper end, of the plug 1), having the part b, turned to fit the lower end of the tube, and the part 6, turned to form a space with the lower end of the tube for the pen, and shaped at the end to fit the pen, the said plug being provided with a central aperture, f, radial apertures g g, and an annular recess, b the whole adapted to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
