DIAPER PIN AND SAFETY PIN SHARPENER Filed April 5, 1961 mmvroa 1 RITTINGHAMAQ.
United States Patent Ofiiice 3,056,911 Patented Aug. 28, 1962 This invention relates to sharpeners and more particularly to a device for sharpening pins.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hand operated device for sharpening frequently used diaper and safety pins in a simple and convenient manner.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an instrument for sharpening pointed objects of the above type which is extremely simple and safe to use, and which will effectively sharpen the point of diaper and safety pins with a minimum amount of time and skill.
. Other objects of the invention are to provide a diaper pin and safety pin sharpener bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away, of a diaper pin and safety pin sharpener made in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged perspective View of certain parts of the present invention; and
FIGURE 3 is a front elevational view of the device shown in FIGURE 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a diaper pin and safety pin sharpener made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main support block 12 having a handle ring 14 integral with one end thereof. This block 12 and ring 14 may be constructed from any suitable molded plastic material in any desired color.
Mounted centrally within the interior of the mounting block 12, is an angle shaped plate 16 having an angularly related terminal flange 18 with an abrasive substance 20 secured thereupon. The support block 12 is provided with a longitudinal bore 22 which is in alignment with the apex of the plate 16 and the abrasive material 26, whereupon insertion of a pointed object, such as a pin 24, into the opening 22, will cause the point 26 thereof to engage the abrasive surface 29. Thereupon, rotation of the pin 24 will cause the abrasive material 20 to sharpen the point 26, to any desired extent.
It will thus be recognized that this device can be used with a minimum amount of skill and experience, and will efiectively and quickly sharpen the point of pins in a minimum amount of time.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What 1 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An instrument for sharpening pointed objects comprising in combination a main support block having an opening at one end for receiving the pointed end of an object to be sharpened therewithin, an abrasive element, a bracket supporting said element within said block within said opening and a handle ring mounted upon the opposite end of said block, said opening in said main support block being in axial alignment with said handle ring and said bracket comprising a flat rectangular plate having an angularly related terminal flange having said abrasive element afiixed to one side of said terminal flan e, said side being adjacent said plate.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said abrasive element comprises an abrasive layer coating one portion or" said bracket in the path of movement of a pin into said opening.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said handle ring comprises a substantially circular ring integral with said support block.
