PANLESS PAINT ROLLER Filed July 3, 1961 INV B1' TOR.
Z EZRA RACHAL United States Patent O 3,949,746 PANLESS PAINT RLLER Ezra Raehai, 323 S, McGuire, Monroe 3, La. Filed July 3, 1951, Ser. No. 121,447 1 Claim. (Cl. 15-575) This invention relates generally to painting equipment, and more speciiically to new and useful improvements in paint rollers conventionally used to apply paint to walls and ceilings.
The paint roller is normally used in conjunction with a sloping paint container or tray. This tray must be constantly replenished with paint, and the roller is dabbed therein to pickup a supply of paint for applying to a wall or ceiling surface. Such means of paint application tends to be messy and does not evenly coat the wall with paint. There is therefore a tendency to pick up an excessive quantity of paint which may drip from the roller upon transfer to the wall surface. Further, much unnecessary time is spent in applying paint to the roller and replenishing the tray with paint. When paint is disposed in an open tray or container, evaporation takes place and a skim will rapidly form over the surface of the paint, thus presenting yet another problem in the application of paint in this manner.
My invention is directed towards the solution of these problems by providing a paint roller which incorporates a paint storage tank within the frame of the roller handle. One face of the tank extends parallel with the roller and is provided with a number of spaced nozzles for ejecting paint onto the roller as desired. A trigger operated valve device selectively opens and closes the nozzles, such that the dispensing of paint onto the roller may be successfully controlled.
it is therefore a primary object of this invention to provide a paint roller which incorporates the paint storage and applicating device for simplifying the operation of painting ceilings and walls with such rollers.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following more detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, taken in conjunction with the attached drawings wherein:
FIG. l is a plan view of the device which comprises my invention, and is shown partly broken away in cross section.
FIG. 2 is a cross sectionalside elevation taken along the line 2-2 of FIG. l.
FG. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the extension means which may be connected at will to the end of the main frame handle.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 represents a handle which is secured at one end to the apex of two outwardly diverging frame arms 6. The frame arms terminate with spaced parallel ends '7 which are suitably drilled at 3 to receive the shaft 9 of a conventional paint roller 10. The ends of the shaft are threaded to removably receive thumb screws 11 Which retain the shaft intermediate the parallel ends 7 of the frame arms.
A triangularly shaped paint container 12, has a top 13, a bottom 14 and three connecting side walls 1S, 16 and 17. The container is removably clipped between the frame arms 6 by spaced clips 18 such that the side walls 15 and 16 are disposed adjacent to and parallel with the frame arms 6, and the side Wall 17 locates parallel with the paint roller and inwardly spaced therefrom. Projecting normally and in a spaced manner TCC along the side wall 17 are three nozzles 19 for dispensing paint onto the roller in a selectively controlled manner. rlie nozzles are closed by small plungers 20 which are disposed inwardly of the container and maintained in a closed relationship with respect to the nozzles by means of converging rods 21 which terminate in a rigid manner on a plate 22 which is urged inwardly of the container yby means of a compression spring 23 located Ibetween the plate and the apex 24 of the frame arms 6. A trigger rod 25 extends centrally through the apex 24 and into the container 12 for engagement with the plate 22. The trigger rod is mounted for reciprocating actuation with respect to the container and terminates outwardly with a hooked linger grip 26 for selectively withdrawing the plate 22 against the .action of the compression spring 23, and thereby withdrawing the plungers 29 outwardly of the nozzles '19 in preparation for dispensing paint through the said nozzles onto the roller. A filler cap 27 threadably engages in the top 13 of the paint container for filling the same when required.
When painting ceilings, it is frequently desirable to achieve this operation without the use of a ladder 0r similar trestle device, and this can be achieved by pro- Viding a handle extension 28 which threadably engages in a threaded hole 29 formed in the outer end of the handle 5. A trigger extension wire 30 is looped about the finger crip 25 and extends longitudinally adjacent the extension handle 28 so that the nozzles may be operated from the extension.
This device enables continuous painting of considerable wall surface without interruption since the paint can be applied to the roller during operation, and the conventional sloping paint tray may zbe completely dispensed with.
Having described the invention with considerable particularity, it should be understood that various modifications niay be made to the precise configuration thereof, without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined in the .appended claim.
I claim:
A paint roiler and applicator, comprising, a handle, a roller frame having diverging arms projecting from one end of the handle, a paint roller rotatably mounted between the outer ends of the arms, a paint container secured intermediate said arms and having a at side wall disposed parallel and rearwardly spaced from the roller, nozzles equally spaced and protruding normally from the side wall and communicating inwardly of the container, plungers for simultaneously closing the nozzles from within the container, converging rods leading from the plungers rearwardly within the container, a plate securing the converging ends of the rods, a trigger rod secured normally to the opposite side of the plate and extending outwardly through the container and terminating with a linger grip disposed adjacent the handle for operating the plungers, and a single conipression spring disposed between said plate and a wall of said container to constantly urge all of said plungers into a closed relationship with respect to the nozzles.
