- the fiap 56 adds strength and stability to the corners of the box or carton.
- FIGS. 7 and 8 The modification illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8 is concerned with disclosing a slighly different means for locking the walls in their erected positions and consists in providing the side walls outer Wall members 42 with a rectangular notch 58 which has the edges thereof at right angles to one another instead of angularly related as illustrated in FIG. l and above described. Further the modification in FIGS. 7 and 8 discloses the locking lugs 59 as integrally, hingedly connected through a score or fold -line 60 with the creeper ap or panel 31 instead of having the said locking lugs on the end wall inner wall member or panel 30.
- corner piece portion 54 has a finished edge only for that portion which is exposed outwardly of the end wall outer wall member or panel 30, the score or fold line 55, connecting with said corner piece portion 54 the iiap 56, is illustrated as stopping short of the outer end of these parts and with a notch 61 which partially severs the corner piece portion 54 and edge finishing fiap 56 from one another.
- FIGS. 9 and l0 While resulting in a box or carton having the general appearance, utility and appeal of those above described affords somewhat greater rigidity and strength to the end walls.
- This result is attained by forming the side wall inner Wall member or panel edge finishing or end flap 56 of a height substantially equal to the height of said side wall inner wall member or panel 42.
- said edge finishing flap 56 extends the full height of the end wall as clearly illustrated in FIG. l0.
- FIG. 9 provides a corner piece 51 that is devoid of an angular score or fold line Such as 52 above.
- the said corner piece 51 is provided with a score or fold line 62 which is an extension of the carton side folds 22 or 24 and with the end wall outer wall member or panel 29 having formed therein a score or fold line 63 that converges from the lower outer corners and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
- This construction therefore, provides a box or carton whose end Walls outer wall members have lateral edges that converge and at the same time the said end walls are reinforced by substantially full height tucking flaps.
- the modification illustrated in the construction in FIGS. 9 and 10 further discloses a different method or manner of locking the walls in erected positions.
- the lateral ends of the side walls inner wall members are slightly inset, as at 64, for 'thereby providing in the erected box or carton an inset shoulder at the lower inner corners of the side walls inner wall members.
- To cooperate with said shoulders use is made of the vertical lateral edges 65 of the end walls outer wall members without using locking lugs of any description as above set forth.
- the erection of the box or carton from the blank of FIG. 9 is substantially identical with that above set forth and the resulting box or carton is again substantially identical in appearance, utility and with greater strength, particularly at the corners.
- FIGS. ll ,to 14, inclusive discloses lthe invention as applied to a box or carton having hollow side walls while in each of the foregoing modications the said side walls were of double thickness.
- the side walls extensions are each provided between the outer walll member or panel 4I and the inner wall member or panel 42 with a panel 56 which in -the erected carton or box forms a side wall top wall member, having its one longitudinal edge connected with the outer wall member or panel 41 through a score or fold line 4t) and its other longitudinal edge connected with the inner wall member or panel 42 by a score or fold line 67.
- the said inner wall member or panel 42 has connected therewith, through a score or fold line 68, a panel 69 which in the erected carton acts as a glue flap for securing the inner wall member lower edge to the main panel as will presently be made clear.
- Each of the said side walls inner and outer wall members have their lateral edges defined by score or fold lines that are, substantially, extensions of 'the main panel end score or fold lines 21 and 23 while the top Wall member or panel 6d has its ends defined by cut lines 70 and 71, and said top wall member or panel 66 has an effective length slightly greater than that of its adjacent wall members.
- a corner piece 51 is provided between the adjacent ends of lthe side wall outer wall member or panel 41 and the end wall outer wall member or panel which to all intents and purposes is similar to the corner piece 51 illustrated in connection with the blank in FIG. 1.
- a tucking flap 72 and 73 is, respectively, integrally, hingedly connected to opposite ends of the inner wall member panel 42 of each side wall extension through the end defining scores or fold lines 45 and 46.
- the end wall extensions 2'5 are similar to those disclosed in FIG. 1 except that the inner wall member or panel 3G', of each said extension, has its ends normal to its longitudinal axis since they are disposed between the inwardly spaced inner Wall members of the modified box or carton.
- each of the panels or glue flaps 69 is of less length than the inner wall members or panels 42 wherefore each of said panels 69 has its ends 74 and 75, respectively, inwardly spaced from the main panel ends 21 and 23 and upon erection the said ends act as shoulders behind which the end wall extension Ilocking panels 31 engage as clearly illustrated in FIG. l2.
- the user in erecting the knocked-down blank of FIG. l2 follows substantially 'the same steps as in erecting the knocked-down blank of FIGS. l and 2 and the mere raising ofthe knocked-down side walls automatically positions the members thereof in spaced apart relation, as illustrated in FIG. 13.
- the said raising of the side walls positions the corner pieces similar to the arrangement thereof as illustrated in FIG. 3 s'o that upon the raising of the end wall extensions the said corner pieces are folded on themselves and enfolded between the end walls inner and outer wall members.
- corner piece 51' may be provided with a iinishing flap, similar to the said iinishing ap 56 of FIG. l, it might be diiiicult to properly inturn such a flap.
- the said upper edge of corner piece portion 54 is disposed beneath the extending ends '7G and 71 of the side walls top wall members as clearly illustrated in FIG. 14.
- the score or fold lines 32 and 33 dening the lateral edges of the end walls outer wall members, may be formed at diierent degrees of inclination which will result in a ⁇ greater or lesser angle between the converging lateral ends of said end wall outer wall member.
- the only consideration necessary in this matter is that the angle of inclination be not such that the upper edges of the corner pieces have their inner corner fully enfolded Iby the end walls inner and outer wall members for insuring the locking of the parts in their erected positions.
- a carton of the class described comprising a substantiallyy rectangular main panel, side walls upstanding from two opposed edges of said main panel and each side wall including an inner and an outer wall member with each of said wall members substantially rectangular in area, an end wall upstanding from each of the remaining edges of the main panel each including an inner and an outer wall member, said end walls outer wall members each having its lateral edges converging whereby said end walls outer wall members have their upper edges of less length than their lower edges, a corner piece integrally, hingedly connected with adjacent lateral edges of the side and end walls outer wall members, said corner pieces each having therein a diagonal score line thereby providing in each corner piece a pair of portions respectively, integrally, hingedly connected with adjacent end wall outer wall member and side wall outer wall member and which corner piece portions are folded on themselves and disposed lparallel to the end walls and with said corner piece portion of each corner piece between the diagonal score line and the side wall outer wall member of a generally triangular conguration and of an area to span the space between the adjacent lateral Vedges

United States Patent O 3,049,280 BXES GR CARTONS Villiam P. Frankenstein, 7260 Eastiawn Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio Filed June 8, 1959, Ser. No. 818,918 4 Claims. (Cl. 229-31) This invention relates to improvements in boxes or cartons and particularly boxes or cartons of the knockeddown variety, that is, boxes or cartons that yare supplied to the user in a dat or extended condition and may be readily erected by the user.
Boxes or cartons are generally provided in two forms, either as fully erected, that is rigidly set up, or in a knocked-down condition, that is, in a condition whereby a user may erect the same and then lock the erected carton generally, without the use of extraneous fastening means.
Erected cartons are frequently provided with a covering material, sometimes called the printed label, which may take the form of paper or foil and the said covering material is applied, as either what is known as a loose wrap or a tight wrap. In each instance the covering material is -applied to the box itself and which box is generally made of cardboard quite stiff by comparison with the said covering material. By tight wrap is meant that the covering material is applied by adhesive throughout its area to the main panel and upstanding wall panels and with an edge or marginal portion inturned inwardly of the said upstanding wall panels. The said covering material of the wall panels in a tight wrap construction extends to the lateral ends or edges of the Said wall panels and i co-incident therewith. By loose wrap is meant that the covering material, or label, while cornpletely covering the box, per se, is applied through adhesive only along the edges of the covering material or label and which covering material or label edges are in turned on the upstandi'ng walls free edges. In the loose wrap construction the lateral end edges of the covering material on one or more, generally two opposed, upstanding wall panels, converge on one another thereby giving the appearance that said covering material on said wall is folded over the upper or free edge of the said wall.
The so called, loose wrap therefore gives a pleasing and artistic appearance to the said walls of the box or carton that is not present in the tight wrap box or carton.
In the so called tight wrap and loose wrap constructions the inturning of the edges of the covering material provides a finished edge to the upstanding walls of the finished set up sti or rigid boxes. In the loose wrap construction the adhesive is generally applied to the edge of the said covering material, or printed label, through a stencil and whereupon the said covering material is folded around the box main panel and upst'anding side walls. This operation is quite laborious and costly wherefore it is used only on boxes that yenclose costlier goods in order to justify the expense thereof.
By the present invention there is produced a box or carton that may be folded or erected to give the ksame effect as the heretofore known loose wrap boxes or carton, however, due to applicants usual construction the said box or carton can be produced much more economically than the heretofore known loose wrap box or carton and applicants box or carton can be readily erected either manually or automatically by machine.
The principal object of the present invention is, therefore, the provision of a lkrlocked-down box wherein the walls of the box maybe set up and locked in their set up positions to give an eiect similar to the Veffect of the heretofore known loose wrap set up stiff or rigid box.
3,049,280 Patented Aug. 14, 1962 Another object of this invention is the provision of a knocked-down `box or carton which can be set up with the same ease and facility that the knocked-down boxes or cartons as heretofore known and which gave the appearance of the so called tight wrap set up boxes or cartons.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a box or carton for accomplishing the foregoing objects which may be produced and acquired as economically as any heretofore known knocked-down box or carton.
The invention as herein disclosed and described is specifically illustrated in connection with rectangular boxes having two opposed Walls formed for accomplishing the above objects. It is to be understood that the invention has application, with equal facility, to boxes or cartons that are triangular, hexagonal or octagonal in plan, as well as boxes or cartons having any number of upstanding Walls.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

FIG. 11 Iis `a view similar to FIG. 1 of `a `blank partially in its knocked-down condition and partially in its extended condition and which blank discloses modifications of FIGS. 1, 7 and 9.
FIG. 12 is a sectional view through a fully knockeddown carton of PIG. 11 as would l'be seen from line 12-12 on said FIG. 11.
FIG. 13 is a perspective view of a fully erected carton from the knocked-down blank of FIG. 1l.
FIG. 14 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view through a corner of the erected carton as seen lfrom line 14-t14 on FIG. 13.
Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.
As lwill be noted `from the above there is herewith disclosed several modifications of boxes or cartons each including the principles of the Ipresent invention and said modifications will be specifically described in so far as they differ one from the other.
The modification disclosed in FIGS. l to 6, inclusive, comprises a ysubstantially rectangular blank including a substantially rectangular central or main panel having its lateral edges deined by score yor fold lines 21, 22, 23 and 24. For co-nvenience in description the score or fold line 21 and 23 will be defined as the ends of the resulting box or carton and said score or lfold lines each integrally, hingedly connect with the main or bottom panel an extension which, -as will later be made clear, are similar in all respects and form vthe end walls for the box or carton. The score or fold lines 22 and 24 will herein-after be dened as the sides of the box or carton and respectively integrally, hingedly connect with the main panel 20 similar extensions 26 which form the side Walls of the box or carlton. It should be understood that end ywalls generally refer to walls of less length than the remaining -walls which are generally designated as side walls or even `front and iback Walls but this nomenclature may be reversed without detracting from ythe invention or disclosure herein.
Since the end wall for-ming extensions 25 are each similar to the other it is deemed suicient if but one of them be described. Said end Wall extension has extending longitudinally thereof a pair of score or fold lines 27 and 28 thereby forming in the extension panels 29, 30 and 31. The panel 29, in the erected box or carton, forms the major portion of the end wall outer Wall member and has its lateral edges deiined by converging score or fold lines 3.2 and 33. The panel 30 forms the end walls inner wall member and has its lateral edges formed, in the main, by diverging cut lines 34 and 35 which terminate in relatively s'nort parallel score or fold lines 36 and 37. The remaining panel 311 of the extension forms in the erected carton a creeper or locking flap.
It ywill be noted from FIG. l that the end Wall outer wall member or panel 29 has a length equal to a corresponding distance on the main panel 20 and which distance is represented by the score or fold line 21. The said outer wall member 29 has its lateral ends defining score or 4fold lines 32 and 33 converging wherefore the other edge of the panel 29 is of less length as represented by the score or fold line 27 and compared with Ithe score or foldvline 21. The end wall inner Wall member has its lateral edges `34 and 35 diverging to the score or fold lines 36 and 37 and which `are spaced from one another a distance substantially equal tothe length of the outer wall member major dimension as represented by the score or fold line 21. The panel o-r combined creeper and locking -ap 3-1 has its lateral ends as extensions of the score or fold llines 36 and 37 wherefore it has a length substantially equal to lthe outer 'wall member major length as represented -by the score or fold line 2-1.
The end Wall or panel 3) through its lateral edges score or - fold lines 36 and 37 has integrally, hingedly connected therewith locking lugs 38 and 39.
Since the -side walls extensions are similar in all respects it is deemed suiiicient if but one of them be defined in detail. Accordingly the extension 26 is provided longitudinally thereof lwith a score or fold line 40 for-ming in the extension a pair of panels 41 and 42. In the erected carton the panel 41 forms the said side wall outer wall member and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 43 and 44 which, in effect, are continuations of the end score or :fold lines 21 and 23. The panel 42, in the erected carton, -forms the sidewall inner wall member and it has its lateral ends formed, in the main, but the score or fold lines 45 and 46 which, in effect, are continuations of the score or fold lines 43 and 44 and there- 4fore `the score or fold lines 21 and 23. The said side wal-l inner rwall member or panel 42 has its outer corners removed thereby providing said Wall `member at its saidV outer corners with notches that includes biased or inclined portions' 47 and 48 and right angular shoulder portions 49 yand v50.
The lateral ends of `the end walls outer wall members or panels 29 and the side Walls outer wall members or panels 41 have bet-Ween them a corner piece lwhich is provided with an angular score or fold line 52 thereby providing in the corner piece a portion 53 integrally, hingedly connected Iwith the end `wall outer -Wall member 29 through the score or fold line 32 or 33 While a second por-tion 54 of said corner piece 51 -is integrally, hingedly connected with the side wall outer yWall member 41 through its lateral end score 43 or 44.
The said portion 54 of the corner piece 51 has integrally'hingedly connected with its `free end, through a score or fold line 55, an edge iinishing flap 56 which is further integrally, hingedly connected with the lateral end of the side wall inner wall member or panel 42 through the end score or fold line 45 or 46 thereof.
After the blank has been cut and scored as above set forth, the side walls inner Iwall members or panels 42, inwardly of its outer edge, is provided with a band of adhesive, such as illustrated -at 57, whereupon the said side IWalls'inner ywall members or panels 42 along with the edge iinishing flaps 56 are folded on the score or -fold lines 40 and `S5' for superimposing the parts on one another as clearly illustrated in the upper portion of FIG. l and pressure is applied to insure proper adhesive connection of the side Walls inner and outer Wall members.
The blank is now in its carton knocked-down position ready for shipment to a user and with such knockeddown blank being as illustrated, in cross section, in FIG. 2.
The user in desiring to set up or erect the box or carton from the knocked-down blank does so by merely raising the side walls from their extended positions as illustrated in FIG. 2 and at the upper end of FIG. 1. This raising of the said side walls causes the portions 53 and 54 of the corner pieces to inwardly and angularly fold with respect to one another on the several score or fold lines 32, 43 and 52, as seen, for example, in lower left hand corner of FIG. 1, and -as illustrated for said corner, as Well as the similar corner at the other end of the end Wall, in FIG. 3. The user then raises, sequentially, the end wall extensions 25 to be normal to the main panel 20 and which operation further folds the said corner piece portions 53 and 54 to be superimposed on one another 4and lie against the inner surface of the end wall outer wall member 29. The end Wall inner wall member or panel 30 is then folded to beuinteriorly of the box or carton and parallel with its outer 'wall member 29 and embrace between said inner and outer wall members 30 and 29 the folded corner pieces.
Either prior to or While folding the inner wall member or panel 30 to its iinal position the Creeper flap or panel 31 and the locking lugs 3S and 39 were bent to outward right angle positions with respect to said end wall inner wall member or panel 30, with said bending being effected on the score or fold lines 28, 36 and 37. The inward folding of the said end wall inner Wall member 30 was continued until, or at the end of said inward folding operation, the locking lugs 3S and 39 snap into the notches now at the lower corners of the side walls as clearly illustrated in FIG. 3 and which notches, it should be noted, were provided by the angular and vertical cut llines 47-49 and 48-50 respectively at opposite ends of the side walls inner Wall members or panels 42. In order to effectively lock the parts in these positions the said locking lugs 38 and 39 are each provided with portions to cooperate with the above noted -biased or inclined and vertical faces of the side wall inner wall members corner notches.
aeaaaeo being spanned by the folded corner pieces portions 53 and 54 particularly the corner piece portion 54 which yhas its surface, and being the same surface of the blank as the end wall outer wall member, exposed.
It Will be noted that it is the upper edge of the said corner piece portion 54 that would be exposed but since this portion of the corner piece has integrally, hingedly connected therewith the iiap 56, and which is inwardly folded upon the inward folding of the side Walls inner wall members or panels 42, the said exposed edge of the corner piece portion S4 is given a finished appearance the same as the free edges of the erected side walls. In addition the fiap 56 adds strength and stability to the corners of the box or carton.
It is believed obvious from the foregoing that the end Wall of the box or carton with its finished converging lateral edges is provided with an end wall of considerable attractiveness as compared with folding boxes or cartons -as heretofore known and employed.
The modification illustrated in FIGS. Further since it is necessary that the upper end of corner piece portion 54 have a finished edge only for that portion which is exposed outwardly of the end wall outer wall member or panel 30, the score or fold line 55, connecting with said corner piece portion 54 the iiap 56, is illustrated as stopping short of the outer end of these parts and with a notch 61 which partially severs the corner piece portion 54 and edge finishing fiap 56 from one another.
This construction somewhat reduces the bulkiness of i the parts since it removes the material immediately beneath the score or fold line 27 between the end walls inner and outer wall members or panels 29 and 30. The resulting box or carton from the blank of FIG. 7 is substantially identical With that from the blank of FIG. 1.
'I'he modification illustrated in FIGS. 9 and l0 while resulting in a box or carton having the general appearance, utility and appeal of those above described affords somewhat greater rigidity and strength to the end walls. 'This result is attained by forming the side wall inner Wall member or panel edge finishing or end flap 56 of a height substantially equal to the height of said side wall inner wall member or panel 42. By this construction and upon the erection of the box or carton said edge finishing flap 56 extends the full height of the end wall as clearly illustrated in FIG. l0. Further'- more the construction illustrated -in FIG. 9 provides a corner piece 51 that is devoid of an angular score or fold line Such as 52 above. Instead the said corner piece 51 is provided with a score or fold line 62 which is an extension of the carton side folds 22 or 24 and with the end wall outer wall member or panel 29 having formed therein a score or fold line 63 that converges from the lower outer corners and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
This construction, therefore, provides a box or carton whose end Walls outer wall members have lateral edges that converge and at the same time the said end walls are reinforced by substantially full height tucking flaps.
The modification illustrated in the construction in FIGS. 9 and 10 further discloses a different method or manner of locking the walls in erected positions. As illustrated, the lateral ends of the side walls inner wall members are slightly inset, as at 64, for 'thereby providing in the erected box or carton an inset shoulder at the lower inner corners of the side walls inner wall members. To cooperate with said shoulders use is made of the vertical lateral edges 65 of the end walls outer wall members without using locking lugs of any description as above set forth.
The erection of the box or carton from the blank of FIG. 9 is substantially identical with that above set forth and the resulting box or carton is again substantially identical in appearance, utility and with greater strength, particularly at the corners.
'I he modification illustrated in FIGS. ll ,to 14, inclusive, discloses lthe invention as applied to a box or carton having hollow side walls while in each of the foregoing modications the said side walls were of double thickness.
Accordingly, as illustrated in FIG. ll, the side walls extensions are each provided between the outer walll member or panel 4I and the inner wall member or panel 42 with a panel 56 which in -the erected carton or box forms a side wall top wall member, having its one longitudinal edge connected with the outer wall member or panel 41 through a score or fold line 4t) and its other longitudinal edge connected with the inner wall member or panel 42 by a score or fold line 67. In addition the said inner wall member or panel 42 has connected therewith, through a score or fold line 68, a panel 69 which in the erected carton acts as a glue flap for securing the inner wall member lower edge to the main panel as will presently be made clear.
Each of the said side walls inner and outer wall members have their lateral edges defined by score or fold lines that are, substantially, extensions of 'the main panel end score or fold lines 21 and 23 while the top Wall member or panel 6d has its ends defined by cut lines 70 and 71, and said top wall member or panel 66 has an effective length slightly greater than that of its adjacent wall members.
A corner piece 51 is provided between the adjacent ends of lthe side wall outer wall member or panel 41 and the end wall outer wall member or panel which to all intents and purposes is similar to the corner piece 51 illustrated in connection with the blank in FIG. 1. A tucking flap 72 and 73 is, respectively, integrally, hingedly connected to opposite ends of the inner wall member panel 42 of each side wall extension through the end defining scores or fold lines 45 and 46.
The end wall extensions 2'5 are similar to those disclosed in FIG. 1 except that the inner wall member or panel 3G', of each said extension, has its ends normal to its longitudinal axis since they are disposed between the inwardly spaced inner Wall members of the modified box or carton.
It should be noted that each of the panels or glue flaps 69 is of less length than the inner wall members or panels 42 wherefore each of said panels 69 has its ends 74 and 75, respectively, inwardly spaced from the main panel ends 21 and 23 and upon erection the said ends act as shoulders behind which the end wall extension Ilocking panels 31 engage as clearly illustrated in FIG. l2.
In practice the blank of FIG. l1 after having been cut and scored has adhesive 76 applied to the panel or glue flap 69 whereupon the panels 66, 42 and 69 are inwardly folded to adhesively secure the glue fiap 69 to the main panel 20 as illustrated at the upper end of FIG. 1l. The blank is now in its knocked-down position for shipment -to the user for erection by him.
The user in erecting the knocked-down blank of FIG. l2 follows substantially 'the same steps as in erecting the knocked-down blank of FIGS. l and 2 and the mere raising ofthe knocked-down side walls automatically positions the members thereof in spaced apart relation, as illustrated in FIG. 13. The said raising of the side walls positions the corner pieces similar to the arrangement thereof as illustrated in FIG. 3 s'o that upon the raising of the end wall extensions the said corner pieces are folded on themselves and enfolded between the end walls inner and outer wall members.
While the said corner piece 51' may be provided with a iinishing flap, similar to the said iinishing ap 56 of FIG. l, it might be diiiicult to properly inturn such a flap. In order, therefore, to provide a finished edge for the end wall the said upper edge of corner piece portion 54 is disposed beneath the extending ends '7G and 71 of the side walls top wall members as clearly illustrated in FIG. 14.
It will be noted that the score or fold lines 32 and 33, dening the lateral edges of the end walls outer wall members, may be formed at diierent degrees of inclination which will result in a `greater or lesser angle between the converging lateral ends of said end wall outer wall member. The only consideration necessary in this matter is that the angle of inclination be not such that the upper edges of the corner pieces have their inner corner fully enfolded Iby the end walls inner and outer wall members for insuring the locking of the parts in their erected positions.
