Description

1 July 31, 1962 s s. JACKSON SHOWER BOARD Filed Oct. 9, 19 1 INVENTOR A-Sc/ACKSO/V ATTORNEY United States Patent: C)
3,946,567 SHOWER BOARD Selma S. Jackson, Rte. 2, Box 47, Marshall, Tex. Filed Oct. 9, 1961, Ser. No. 143,668 2 Claims. (Cl. 4185) This invention relates to a board or shallow elongated tray providing a convenient support for an infant while bathing the infant and for washing the infants head.
More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide a board or tray adapted for use in conjunction with a kitchen sink, its associated drainboard and a conventional spray hose of the type constituting an associated part of a modern, sink.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a shower board or tray having means for supporting the board or tray on a drainboard and sloping downwardly toward an end thereof which is disposed over the sink and from which the water is discharged into the sink.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the shower board or tray; 9
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view thereof, partly broken away, showing the board or tray in one position of its use;
FIGURE 3 is an end elevational view of the board or tray looking from right to left of FIGURE 1, and on an enlarged scale;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 but showing a different position of the board or tray, and
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 5-5 of FIGURE 1.
Referring more specifically-to the drawing, the shower board in its entirety and comprising the invention, as illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 3, is designated generally 7 and includes an elongated shallow receptacle or recessed board, designated generally 8, having an elongated substantially fiat bottom 9. The receptacle or board 8 has corresponding side walls 10 which extend upwardly from side edges of the bottom 9, and is provided at one end thereof with an end wall 11 which is joined integrally with corresponding ends of the side walls 10 by rounded corners 12. The side walls 10 have inwardly turned flanges 13 at the opposite end of the bottom 9 and which terminate in spaced apart relation to one another so that an end portion 14 of the bottom 9 opens outwardly of the board or receptacle 8 between said flanges 13 and thus constitutes an open end of the receptacle. The walls 10 and 11, the corners 12 and the flanges 13 are flared outwardly from the bottom 9 toward their upper edges, as best seen in FIGURE 1. The upper edges of the side walls 10 slope downwardly, relative to the bottom 9, from the corners 12 to the flanges 13, so that the board or receptacle 8 has a deep end 15, located adjacent the end wall 11 and a shallow opposite end 16. I
The bottom 9 is provided with a series of transversely spaced drainage apertures 17 which are located adjacent the end wall 11 and in the deep end 15. The underside of the bottom 9 is provided with a transversely extending cleat 18 which is located near the end wall 11 but more remote therefrom than the drainage apertures 17.
The shower board 7 also includes a stand 19 preferably formed of wire and including a bottom or base portion 20 and a top portion 21. The stand 19 is elongated, as seen in dotted lines in FIGURE 1 and in FIG- URE 3, and is disposed crosswise beneath the shallow end 16 of the bottom 9. The base portion 20 thereof is adapted to rest upon a part of the upper surface of a drainboard 22. The top portion 21 is disposed above and spaced from the base portion 20 and is inclined upwardly and outwardly relative thereto to bear flush against the underside of the shallow end 16 of the bottom 9 for supporting said end above the level of the deep end 15. The base portion 20 is connected at its ends to the top portion 21 by upright portions 23 forming supporting legs, from the upper ends of which the top portion 21 slopes upwardly and outwardly of the bottom 9 toward its end 16. The top portion 21 includes a straight intermediate portion 24 which extends crosswise of the bottom 9 and which is provided, intermediate of its ends, with an upwardly and outwardly extending curved hook 25 which projects through an opening 26 in the bottom 9, at its shallow end 16, as seen in FIGURE 5, for detach ably connecting the board or receptacle 8 to the stand 19.
When the shallow end 16 is supported in an elevated,
position by the stand 19, as seen in FIGURE 2, the board or receptacle 8 extends from said stand inwardly of the drainboard 22 and the cleat 18 rests upon an inner end of the drainboard 22 which is located adjacent a sink 27. If the drainboard 22 has a molding 28 along its inner edge, the cleat 18 abuts against said molding, as seen in FIGURE 2, and will effectively function therewith to prevent the board 8 from sliding on the drainboard toward the sink. When the board 8 is thus disposed, its deep end 15 is located directly over a part of the sink so that water will flow down the inclined bottom 9 toward the deep end 15 and will drain therefrom through the apertures 17 into the sink 27.
With the shower board 7 disposed as seen in FIGURE 2, an infant can be laid on the board or receptacle 8 with its head near the elevated shallow end 16 and its feet in the deep end 15. The board or receptacle 8 is of a length greater than the length of an infant. With the baby thus disposed, it can be bathed utilizing a spray hose, not shown, constituting conventional equipment of modern sinks.
. In order to wash the babys head, the stand 19 is detached from the board 8 and the board 8 is reversed so that its shallow end 16 is disposed over the sink 27 and its deep end 15 is supported on the drainboard 22 by the cleat 18, as seen in FIGURE 4. In this position the bottom 9 will slope slightly downward from the end 15 toward the end 16 so that water will be discharged therefrom through the open end 14 of the bottom as the in: fants head is being washed with the spray hose.
It will be readily apparent that the shower board 7 may be made in various sizes including miniature sizes adapted for use as a toy for washing dolls. I
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may be resorted to, without departing from the function or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined'by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: 7
1. A shower board comprising an elongated substantially flat bottom, side walls and an end wall, said side walls and end wall being connected to an rising from the bottom, said end wall extending across one end of the bottom and being joined at its ends to complementary ends of said side walls, said side walls extending along side edges of the bottom from end-to-end thereof and having upper edges sloping downwardly relative to the plane of the bottom from said end wall, said bottom having a part located near said end wall and adapted to rest on an edge of a drainboard, said bottom having drainage openings between said part of the bot-tom and the end wall,
and an elongated stand disposed crosswise of and beneath the bottom, remote from said end wall, said stand including an elongated base adapted to rest on the drain board and an elongated top portion disposed above and at an incline to said base and engaging flush against another part of the underside of the bottom for supporting the shower board with the bottom thereof disposed at an incline downwardly from said stand to provide a receptacle in which an infant is adapted to be supported for bathing. 5 2. A shower board as in claim 1, said bottom having an opening located remote from said end wall, said stand being formed of wire and the top portion thereof having a hook member extending upwardly therefrom and engaging detachably through said last mentioned opening 10 for detachably connecting the stand to the shower board.
